Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon
BTW, I'm not trying to make the case that our Pk and general defense weren't sub par. The stats don't lie and the stats are ugly.
I have a theory based on no knowledge --which is that Bayreuther and Sweetman show up and they are both incredibly creative and offensively minded. Baker is also a great playmaker. And, we have ridiculous goal scoring power. So the coaches give our D the leeway to rush and pinch and get caught up ice because they support an incredible offense. The strategy backfired a few too many times at the wrong times especially once we got into the meat grinder portion of the ECAC schedule which doesn't always reward that kind of play. There were obviously some flamingly bad giveaways, missed hits and sometimes lame backchecking that resulted in GAs but I have to wonder if to some degree our porous defense wasn't built into the offensive strategy. Look at Patrick Doherty who seemed to me to have been given the green light to go for the shorties on the PK. He got a couple and had some other great chances but that can cost you. My random theory FWIW. The other, more simple theory is that we just missed too many coverage assignments and the goaltenders didn't always make enough saves..
Great post and spot on.
Only problem is that 13 yrs. w/out an ECAC Championship is asking for a LOT of patience. 6-2-2 had me thinking this team was going to break that drought and make a serious run at an NCAA Title. Our inability to kill penalties really tested one's patience and ultimately dashed any thoughts that I had when we were 6-2-2.
Trying not to be negative here, just wondering what could have been - if our PK was able to better and consistently get the job done.
