St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

In the highlight video the puck clearlry hits the back of the goal and comes out... so the conspiracy theories can be put to bed. SLU looked to be a very decent team but make no mistake, you played NoDak at a very good time. I was unable to watch Saturdays game live but I was at Fridays and that was the least effort I've seen a UND team put in in more than 25 years of watching this program. I enjoyed watching number 10 skate, he is clearly the real deal. Good luck from here out St. Lawrence fans, you clearly have a great program to cheer for...

Thanks for putting that to bed. Your replay access must have been better than the online stream because that surely wasn't clear. Regardless, a goal is goal, thanks for the compliments and good luck to UND the rest of the way.

I say no goal. You can see the puck the entire time hence it couldn't have gone under the cross-bar, but, I'll concede that it is pretty hard to overrule the call on the ice.

Critsports nailed, as soon as you fly west of the OH/NY boarder, you can not expect to get calls and you can also expect a number of phantom calls against. We got both but still almost prevailed in both games. I agree it is a good showing and after the third and I am sure UND knowing that calling #2 a goal was a gift, they felt fortunate to get out with a win. As long as I live, I'll never forget what happened to us at Western Michigan early in the 87-88 season. For those that don't remember, we entered the 3rd of the 2nd game out there up 6-1 and played almost every minute of the 3rd period and OT down 2 men losing 7-6 in OT. Some were absolute phantom calls. It was so obvious, you would have to believe that the refs had money on that game. Ever since that, Joe Marsh made it a point (which he was always right about) that you have to deal with homer refs everywhere but the ECAC and in the ECAC they often favor the visiting team. Regardless, that's one of the obstacles you have to over come as a good team.

I am pretty certain it is reciprocal but I just can't recall. I am not at all certain. What I am certain of is that I am no fan of this league reallignment. When it destroys rivalries like Denver, CC, UMD and UND against Minnesota and Wisconsin, eliminates the CCHA in whole, increases the number of autobids to several small leagues like the new WCHA and NCHC, I just can't warm up to it. I personally feel like the chances are good this will really harm the prestige of a bunch of programs - basically all western teams not in the Big 10. I do expect a meteoric rise of Penn State - they''ll benefit, but really think this will take some getting used to and may hurt a re-emergent ECAC with a number of teams in the league posting some big NC wins and solid records in the first half.

Any way, good to see two pretty solid 60 minute efforts and good play front to back. These games against Clarkson are huge as are the games against UVM. Let's hope the roll starts now because I will bet money these next two games which will decide who gets home ice and the bye in March.

These are four big games if we want to be in the running for an at-large NCAA tournament bid. Clarkson currently sits 8th in the Ratings Percentage Index and UVM 20th.

Overall the Saints played 2 pretty good games out west and are hopefully finding their stride.

Certainly hoping for a good showing these next fews games as well. Not sure if the guys read these threads, but BRING IT this weekend you guys. Take it to the Knights, we definitely are due against them after the past couple of years.

Anyone making it out for both games against our arch-rival this weekend? I'll be at both, hoping for two wins (fingers crossed). Let's pack Appleton Saturday night and make it even more difficult on those Knights from down Route 11 ... Let's Go Saints!!

Saints#1, I'll be watching both games online this weekend.

On a separate note, does anyone know when Drew Smolcynski is due back from his upper body injury?

I believe I remember it was a possible separated shoulder? If that's the case, I would imagine sometime after the new year. Simply speculation, however.

I'll be watching online as well.

Here's to a good week of practice to the team. We'll want to be at our best as we take on that other school located down Rt 11.

No time like now to start making those life long memories. In looking at last year's SLU Hockey Tribute, there was one team I noticed that was absent from the highlight reel.

I'm sure the seniors would like nothing better to make sure the Golden Knights are added to this year's film!

I can't tell on the goal.

I think the realignment is pretty awful and I'm not sure even the BIG 10 will benefit by knocking so many of the name NCHC teams off of their schedules. It could hurt their take at the gate without those big rivalry teams like CC, NODAK and Denver coming in every year. It also puts them at much more exposure to the mercy of each team's individual year's individual schedule for Pairwise purposes. The bad news for everyone is that the BIG 10 are likely to load up their schedules with Big Name Hockey East teams like BC and Notre Dame.

I'm interested in hearing how you see the realignment hurting a re-emergent ECAC? I think it tends to help. Each of the Western teams including the B1G are no longer guaranteed the same strength of schedule advantage they used to begin with. The non-BIG 10 teams may have to sign more reciprocal travel contacts than they used to. Michigan and Minnesota were never going to come to Canton anyway but now isn't it conceivable that we might get a Denver or a CC or an Omaha into Appleton, especially if we put together a couple of good years.? If the ECAC continues to do well, won't WCHA, and NCHC teams need to get us on their schedules?

It's kind of amazing. It feels like we are having a pretty good year but we are currently only 7th best among ECAC teams in the RPI index. With 18 games to go, 13 are against teams that would meet the PWR TUC criterion (although I'm not sure that TUC matters anymore). I can't recall a year where that many games in the back half of our schedule had national implications.

Re the PWR stuff, it's relevant but I'm just worried about the next game. The outcome of our annual trek up Route #11 has usually been in line with our overall record when the season ends. We'll need to play even better than we did both nights at UND to pull off a win in Potsdam - as such an outcome has/have been few and far between in the past.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Re: realignment- The realignment, by itself, was a mixed bag for college hockey as a whole. It allowed the sport to gain another team, which is nothing but a positive. It also prevented the game from losing a team, because it opened a home for UAH. However, it did/is putting some great rivalries and traditions on the back burner, at the very least. This is mostly for the western teams and leagues, but it is disappointing. I simply hope that the new WCHA is able to sustain without the big school draws at some of these small schools. That was a big portion of revenue when those teams came to the little guys (by force). Time will tell if the small schools can continue to get some substitutes for that.

As for how it affects the ECAC. IMO, it won't affect the league negatively. The addition of the new PWR rules, with regards to the bonus for quality wins on the road and at home, will likely only help the league if it can continue to become more prevalent in late March and early April. Sure, our schools will likely never get Minnesota, Michigan, etc to travel east (Maybe on a 2 for 1 deal, MAYBE), but I think some of those schools will figure it out and schedule the ECAC more than they have in the past.
