Re: St Lawrence Hockey

And Brown continues their ridiculous streak of years taking at least a point in the series. What is it now, 20+?

Some well off Brown alumni needs to donate a rink. I think SLU hockey alumni would gladly take care of the demolition of the Meehan Morgue for them.

2 points on that trip is pretty good. 2 points on the road and take 3+ points on home weekends will be recipe for a bye.

Was at the Brown game tonight. I'd say there were close to as many SLU fans as Brown fans. It was a decent hockey game. Brown is still the same...pretty horrible to watch. All they do is clog the middle, trap and I'd say their style of play is better than ambien. Officiating was poor. At least one goal each way was offside by an obvious amount. Penalty calls were uneven and the refs missed a few blatant ones most noticeably a nice cross check by Brown away from the puck with about 5 left in the 3rd. They also miss-called about 5 icings. The only thing less competent than ECAC officials are the people in charge of Healthcare.gov.

Second Brown goal was a bad bounce. Puck hit Bayreuther's skate and just sat there for a wide open Brown shot and goal. I suppose all things considered, a tie was a fair result. Not a lot of energy in the game, but I blame that on Meehan.

Hockey at Brown is such a non-event. I don't know what sports draw there, but it sure never has been hockey. I still don't get why anyone would go there to play and that includes Pete Lappin's son. He is a good player and though he had no points, he drew about 3 penalties tonight and got a good run at Wenny in the process. But what a horrible place to play half your games.

The Freshmen are good. Matt Carey, Sweetman and Smolcynski impressed me the most tonight but Bayreuther and Ward looked good too. Hagen has improved a lot and McGovern had a good game. Two points on the weekend. I'll take it. The best thing about this team versus last year is guys are fighting for ice time again. That's a very good thing.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

:DIf you asked most coaches a split or two points on the road is good. BTW...No fair, you got another Carey !

Not only that........but he is wearing number 16 (Flanny's old number) and filling it out very well.

Speaking of #16 (now #27), Flanagan gets a goal, an assist and 1st star of the game for the Phantoms at Binghamton: http://senshot.com/2013/10/27/game-results-adr/

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Overall I think the Saints have to be happy gaining two points on the road this weekend. This team has lots of promise and should only improve as the season moves on. One area that was exposed on Saturday was the PK and the number of penalties taken. While the box score only shows one Brown PP goal, their other 2 goals were right after their power plays had ended and the Saints were scrambling in their own end.

As for the positives, Whinny made some big saves Saturday night and the 1st power play unit seems to be on a real roll.

Another important road series this weekend and crucial ECAC points to be had.

Harvard, so far, seems to be playing quite well. However, the past couple of years they were supposed to be one of the top dogs and underachieved. Dartmouth looks like they have some issues right now, but we know all too well that you can't give anything less than 100% effort in this league.

Hopefully we get at least another couple points and work on cancelling our frequent member card to the sin bin. Although I will say one thing I've noticed in looking at other ECAC box scores is it seems the refs are calling tight games all around the league. Might be a point of emphasis to call penalties early in the season to make a point. Obviously, I would prefer them to call it the same on day 1 to the last day, but that's a pipe dream for our refs.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Taking a look at penalty minutes, we have the 5th highest overall in the ECAC and 3rd highest in ECAC only games. I agree they need to lose that sin bin card. It is early, and I'm sure those numbers will go down.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Greg Carvel shared a picture of the aftermath of the puck to the eye at Brown on Twitter. Hope he feels better soon!

Poor Coach Carvel.....no wonder he had an ice pack on it for the whole game. If he didn't ice it....can you imagine how bad the swelling might have been?

I think two points out of next weekend is a reasonable expectation. Harvard is playing well and Dartmouth is in a bit of a state of disarray right now. As to the penalties, they may be a point of emphasis, but, the amount we had vs. the amount Ylae and Brown had were very uneven. Some of ours were obvious....but at Ylae in particular, the refs swallowed the whistle pretty much when it came to calling them against the Bulldogs.

Brandon Bollig with possibly one of the most entertaining NHL hits ever. He sends a Winnipeg Jet through the glass and into the crowd.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Impressed am I.
Was at the game tonight and boy did we play well. The game started fairly even and before long we established a dominant pattern that would continue throughout the contest. We really controlled the play. Skating edge to us, passing edge to us, territorial edge to us, intensity to us....we controlled the game. Most of it was played in the Harvard end. The final score doesn't tell the story. We hit at least 4 posts.....on the PP we dominated. Although we didn't score on the PP we had one where the puck stayed in the Harvard zone the whole PP and not just rotating it around the perimeter. We also had numerous stellar chances to score and missed a few open nets....had it not been for that the score could have been 6 or 7 to 1. Justin Baker put some wonderful moves on one PP stepping around 2 Harvard players to put a tough shot on goal during one of the PP's.

The first line is awesome and really scary on the PP. Greg Carey's game is much more complete and he is passing the puck setting up others for great looks. Matt Carey is deke after deke blowing by players....if anything he is passing a bit too much and as a result missing a few shooting opportunities. Chris Martin is FLYING all over the ice and using his speed.

The best part for me was unlike the other games I have seen in person and on the computer.....we really limited the other teams opportunities. Harvard had a few flurries and did score on a PP, but for the most part we really limited their opportunities, kept them to the perimeter and minimized their time in our zone.

A very complete team effort and a pleasure to watch. I was very impressed with everyone on the team and proud to be cheering for them as they deserved it.

I missed the game tonight (well, last night). Just my .02, and I know it's still early in the season, but we are very good................and, the potential to be very, very good is there. More than anything else, I like our balance throughout the lineup.. If the TEAM continues to work its butts off, this could be one incredible season...........it all depends on how hard EVERYBODY on the team works.

Great road trip, thus far!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Congrats to the Saints on a solid road win last night! While I didn't get a chance to watch or listen, by reading Mike's comments here it's clear they were a treat to watch.

I'll be heading to Hanover, NH tonight to watch the game. Hopefully the Saints can come up with another win. As we know all ECAC games are so important. Dartmouth is still looking for their first win and almost bit Clarkson last night. The Saints will have to play another full 60 minutes tonight to earn another important two points. Go Saints!

And the other thing I forgot to mention (and I know the players and Coach Carvel know it) is that our SLU fan support last night was great. Every time the team came out there were SLU chants and people cheering for them. While Harvard fans were spaced out around the building....we had a couple of sections filled up with SLU fans and I do believe we far outnumbered the Harvard fans in attendance.

That has been happening to us on a regular basis. Bright-Landry used to be a tough place to play if you were an opponent because we had enthusiastic fans and a raucous student section. No more. The program has been mediocre for many years and fan support has dwindled to the point where Harvard is giving away tickets to people who live in the surrounding communities just to fill seats. Pathetic but this is our reality. The only game we sell out is Cornell and that's because their fans dominate the building. To say that it is embarrassing would be an understatement.

Yes, it was empty which makes my comment on the night be ***? I had to buy 3 extra tickets and the only section that had tickets available according to Harvard's website was 14, then I get there and more than 50 percent of all sections other than the sections by the SLU bench were empty. I actually have never seen it on the road in all my years where during starting lineups the visiting team had a ton of noise and I could not hear any clapping for Harvard. It's going to be tough to turn the program around recruiting wise with that. But, we can't talk. There are a lot of games at Appleton with a lot of empty seats too.

As for the game, Sweetman was very good. Baker was very good. I don't know if Matt Carey will be better than his brother, but he is already more versatile. Agree with Mike 100% he has to shoot more. Again, Hagen is noticeably improved from last year. Wenny was solid but other than the first 5 minutes, SLU dominated the game. We had 3-0 PK's in the second I believe and outshot them about 15-4. The number of grade A scoring chances was unreal for us, but that's a good thing and a bad thing because we didn't score on a lot of them. I recall 4 posts and 3 open nets missed. The puck was bouncing last night. The only guy that could keep it on his stick was Vesey from Harvard. Very impressed by our defense last night. They gave up very little, got shots off very quickly, and played disciplined all night. For 1.5 minutes on our first PP I don't remember it ever looking better but we didn't score.

Yeah, I was impressed. I was a bit worried going in but we pretty much dominated the game. The only Harvard freshmen that impressed me was Espisito. Guiltinan did not impress me, and was happy to show his fake toughness after the whistle. I think my overall comment is that our freshmen look ready for this level and most of Harvard's didn't. Also, Harvard's goalie had some pretty shaky moments.

I think it is safe to say our defense is better than last year. Masella looked much better than last Saturday. I like the balance of the lines. I like the team speed. The discipline last night was good. All for penalties against us were marginal. One Wick got because he was much stronger than the H. player. It was as solid a road win as you can hope for. The best thing was it was a 60 minute effort. I like it when that happens.

8-5 4road points. i'll take it. Love that the second line, Doherty (Hanover High) and Ward (ex-Dartmouth) and Hughes (needed to get on the board) all had huge nights. But 5 GA? Pretty good first 10 games of the season.
