Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Nice win by the boys tonight on the road. Flanny dishing and Wenny saving our bacon particularly in the second. Way to go boys! Get one at Lynah tomorrow night!!!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Liked the effort tonight, stayed out of the sin bin, need to work on initial pass out of defensive zone which should help with shots on goal. Like the disiplined position play !!!!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Nice job vs Colgate. For some reason winning at Starr is always tough. Good luck tonight at another difficult location. Loved the Joe Marsh tribute - is there a Tom Brokaw connection?

Re Tom Brokaw.

His book, "Bump" about the Vietnam generation featured a chapter on Tom and Nellie Coakley who met in Vietnam. Tom and his brother are from Canton -- both played played at Brown in the '60s. (brother in law, Ron Spadacini, son or nephew (not sure which) Sean Coakley and nephew Joe Spadacini all played goalie for Colgate, SLU and SLU respectively) Tom was a long time VP at SLU and helped to invite Brokaw to accept an honorary degree from SLU last year. Which he did. Brokaw was asked to narrate the Joe Marsh video as a favor, which he also did --- and it sounds great.

Re Starr Rink. IMHO second only to Brown's Meehan Arena on the cold, dank, dark and empty ECAC arena's list --never good for St. lawrence teams historically.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Just some food for thought........
We seemed to win last night with the early season formula of getting outshot by a wide margin and scoring on an inordinately high percentage of our SOG. Can we exist and be a good team on that formula?

Also......on the Tom Brokaw book......I thought it was "The Greatest Generation"??? Anyway whatever the title if you read the chapter on Tom Coakley it is almost impossible to read it without tearing up. It is very touching.

As for that being a winning formula - my vote is usually no, but Matt W. has been/is a great equalizer. As for the game, that pass by Flanagan to Doherty for our second goal was as it good as it gets. Equally impressive was the way we protected the lead in the third period, particularly a sequence where we froze the puck along the boards for what seemed like an eternity. Am expecting a very close game tonight at Cornell, but you never know.

For those who regularly keep up with the recruiting, the next two classes are shaping up to be top-notch imo. And, it's my understanding that Matt Carey is on campus and will be joining the team this fall.

On to Ithaca.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Think tonight answered the question posed earlier today..........."Live by the sword, die by the sword."
Again......we were very competitive and in it until the end.
Still would like to see a little more (even at least) in the chances, SOG dept.

Let's go Saints........Clarkson next and this is the league one that counts. Gotta have it!!!!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

What is going on in Ithaca? Two of the worst officiated games of the season, that what is going on! First on Friday night vs Clarkson with Officials reversing their initial calls after Cornell failed to take Joakim Ryan out of the game and continued to play him after he was ejected. Talk about sportmanship! How can a coach go against officiating, play a guy that was ejected and in the outcome the officials just reverse all of their calls. Then last night vs the Saints how many phantom penalties can you produce? A loss is a loss, but it seems to be win at any cost in Cornell, too bad, otherwise it was a good game. One can only hope that the League looks into the officiating that went on in Ithaca.

This is not what happened. The call was wrong. Joakim Ryan was deemed to have never been given a penalty, and Cornell played down a man unnecessarily for an entire minute. Ryan was also never ejected. That was McCarron. That said, the fact that they got this wrong, and forced Cornell to play a man down for a minute unnecessarily is a joke. Secondly, I agree against SLU there were about twice as many penalties on both teams than necessary. The Ferlin roughing to start the game was a joke (as are most roughing calls in this league). The only penalty I one hundred percent agreed with was the hooking call that followed the Espo goal. But the league needs to look into its officiating in general, as ECAC officiating is brutal (2 weeks ago, I saw a Cornell player be escorted to the visting penalty box). But a good game with some great goals (especially that tape to tape pass from Axell to Esposito)

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Hope the Saints can finish up strong before winter break and then have a solid second half like they did last season.

Here's hoping as well. Plus, wednesday's game is a big one against our arch-rival Clarkson at Appleton. A win against Clarkson will give SLU it's 1000th win in the programs storied history.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Looking forward to making the trip to Appleton on Wednesday to see the Saints play the Golden Knights. Hope SLU can take it home!

For the first time in about 17 years I am going to miss my first home hockey game ... (Prior engagements) ... It's going to feel very strange, but I will be there at heart for sure. Let's go Saints!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I was just reading the Weekly Game Notes on the SLU Men's Hockey Website. Here's some interesting stats., one that is a bit off and another that is way off:

1. Series vs. Clarkson since 1925: 65-116-9
In Potsdam: 22-57-6
At Appleton: 33-43-3
Neutral: 5-10-0
So, that leaves (if my math is right) 5-6-0 in Canton prior to Appleton being built in '51

2. Series since SLU became a grant-in-aid school starting with the '98-'99 season (and evened the playing field imo): 18-19-3. Hmmm. NOTE and FWIW, I'm 99.9% sure that our first grant-in-aid class was for the fall of in '97, the class that included the likes of Andersen, Coakley, Desrosiers, Fyfe, Gellard, and Symington (talk about talent!), so "18-19-3" is likely a year off.

3. Matt Weninger's Career Record: 27-365-8. Somebody made a typo. here, or Matt had a bunch of losses where those games were played with guys like me playing in front of him.:)

The above said, I'm now stoked to listen to the game.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

2-0 Clarkson End of 1...We look awful, Clarkson looks good...That is all

Clarkson outhustled and outworked SLU in the first. I am sure the Saints coaching staff is gonna rip the entire team during the intermission. Good thing Joe is not there. He might have had a stroke in the locker room ripping on the team after that performance.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

As I thought, SLU comes out and completely dominates the opening 8 minutes of period 2, misses 3 wide open nets and then Clarkson scores on a breakaway by Joe Zarbo to make it 3-0 CCT after 2 periods. This game is still anyones to win. Saints outshot Clarkson 18-6 that period  . SLU is not gonna keep on misfiring.
