St Lawrence Hockey

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Yeah, and even as a Maine fan who was there, I have to agree that the 2nd-4th lines looked better than the highly-touted 1st line all night, both nights.

SLU really got after it, enjoyed very good goaltending, and look to me like a team to be reckoned-with, both this year and in the near future.

There's no way in the world that I can see the Saints finishing in the bottom-half of the ECAC, even when measured against a very weak Maine squad... I had to admire the effort, physicality and speed I saw from them.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

George Hughes has been sent from Orlando to Bakersfield (Oilers ECHL affiliate) for future considerations. Was hoping to get up to Orlando in the next 2 weeks to catch a game. Same thing happened to Bogosian last year, just as I was going to be able to go catch an Everblades game, he got sent to Toledo. I'm bad luck, apparently.

I also saw in our local paper that Max Mobley was waived by his former ECHL team. Bad luck also, I need to stop reading the sports transactions area in the paper.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

How about these new faces in the lineup, huh?! Smolcynski with 2 in his debut tonight, Ward continuing his goal/game pace. Hopefully this secondary scoring continues, the horses in the lineup will get it going.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

11-12 hour bus ride, team goes down by 2, and then responds in a big way. I really like the composure of this team and that contributions are coming from many different players. Very impressive.

We're looking forward to see Hughes play at the infamous San Francisco Cow Palace when the Condors visit in November. With Mike Madill behind the Las Vegas bench and Sharks tickets at $100 a seat, I'm fast becoming an ECHL fan. Besides, the SF Bulls have a bar at ice level where you can drink beers during the games.

The "coast" is very underrated for the quality of hockey they have, especially for the cheap cost to watch a game. Can't blame you at all for that. I'm lucky, in that I have the Lightning ~30 minutes away, and tickets are quite cheap for most games. I also have Orlando and the Everblades for ECHL teams, both within 2 hours.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Well........we are a young team and we seem to be playing with a lot of verve and enthusiasm. Considering it was Ferris State, on the road, and a long way from home I will take a split like that anytime.
Scoring is really spread around which is nice to see. That will create more room for the top line...or, if the other team keys on the top line and Carey....then that does open up opportunities for the other three lines to score.
All in all....a very nice start to the season.

You nailed it. It's fantastic to see the new faces being such big contributors to the offense so far. A split certainly isn't a horrible result against FSU on the road.

That said, we did take 2 penalties while on the PP tonight. Can't shoot ourselves in the foot like that, those are careless/frustration penalties. Saints1 remarked in the game thread that it appeared Wenny wasn't on top of his game tonight. Also, it sounded like FSU really carried play in the 2nd and 3rd, hopefully just fatigue from the long trip and early in the season.

Big set next weekend against Northeastern. They've got some big guns themselves, (Kevin Roy has been hot thus far) and should be another good idea to see how we match up against HE. Looking forward to checking out the video feed!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Not a bad weekend for a young team. Happy Birthday Brian!

Thanks for the birthday wishes from all here and also on FB. Missed last night's game - at niece's wedding at the Yale Club in Manhattan. Spent 2 days this month near LP doing my photo-stuff in very remote areas; then go to NYC. Exciting, albeit a bit tiring, October-month this year.

Nice weekend by the Saints. Taking 2 points out there is fine IMO.

Alumni Weekend coming up, but can't go - yet another wedding for me.

Good article about Bags and Hurley - http://theahl.com/bagnall-following-former-coach-s-lead-p187939 To say Hurley was a hard worker as a player is such a massive understatement. Focused, and he worked his balls off. Not in the classroom maybe, but on the bike and ice he did. Yet another reason his involvement in the SLU program is a great thing.

I've seen this team some...the defense is better than last year. Team defense is better and scoring is more balanced and anyone who called this the 10th best class in the ECAC is a brainless gasbag. I am not sure it is the best. It's tough to compete against teams like Yale and Harvard that just get the cream of the crop, but it's a good class with a bit of everything. Not a great outcome on Saturday, but good comeback on Friday. The taking of bad penalties will be addressed...that's fixable. Huge test this weekend. Northeastern is doing well out of the gate.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

It's the time of year to rant about the early voting in the USCHO poll. I know it doesn't mean anything and we're probably better off under the radar. But you have to wonder about voters who would vote Mass-Lowell at 1-3 with a loss to Sacred Heart ahead of SLU at 3-1 with 2 HEA and one WCHA win. Lake Superior at 4-0 with two wins over Union is even more screwed at #15. Evidently, the closer you are to the Canadian border, the worse you do by the poll voters.

F the polls. The only thing that matters is the PWR.

I definitely agree that UML shouldn't even be on the radar right now, but SLU's wins against Maine probably won't carry much import in the PWR down the road. (Maine still stinks.)

You Saints' fans have a hard working team and good 'tending to watch. If what I saw in Canton last week is any indication, SLU has a real shot at the ECAC title.

People us different criteria as to how they vote. Clearly the people who voted for UML include perceived potential as a factor, not just performance to date. If performance to date was the only factor then how could Yale get any votes?
