Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Fun night!

Mike and I decided to go to the game on the spur of the moment, and what a good decision it turned out to be. Got to see the Spaceman for the first time in quite a while, along with quite a few other friends. Leckster, we missed you.

I have to admit I didn't go into the game with a ton of confidence. Then after the first period I thought Dartmouth just looked too strong and quick. We just didn't have the puck very much and they were getting a lot of shots on Weninger. Even though SLU played a good second period, another late goal really looked like a killer. St. Lawrence was working very hard, but again I just thought Dartmouth would have too much in the third period and we'd hit the wall. Boy was I wrong.

Weninger kept SLU in it early, and made a spectacular save in the third period on what looked like an easy tap-in for Dartmouth. I still don't know how he got from post to post so quickly. Wick's first goal was absolutely gorgeous, too. What a pass from Flanagan - in the air, over a defenseman's stick, from one faceoff dot to the other, and it landed perfectly for a wicked one-timer. We were laughing after Wick's second goal, when he carried the puck in 2 on 1 with Carey. I was saying "Don't shoot, don't shoot, give it to Carey, don't shoot!!!" And of course Wick buried it.

I imagine the SLU players are exhausted, and Dartmouth must be wondering what the heck happened tonight, but what a good win for the Saints. That was fun.

Have to admit, I didn't expect the result. For the first time in a very long time we sat right on the ice level in the first row. In the first period all I was thinking was wow.... "Dartmouth is bigger, faster, stronger!" And they were. But some how we hung in there close enough to make it interesting and then in the third we stepped on the gas a little bit and pulled away.
I echo Tim's comments....that Flanny pass to wick was gorgeous. Were it not for Wenny however the result could have been very different. He made some very impressive saves including the side to side one that Tim mentioned that looked like a sure goal. I saw the TV interview with Gaudet afterward and he summed it up best saying that Dartmouth didn't bury their chances and if you don't....anything can happen.
Leckster....where were you? That's as close to a home game as it's going to get. Hope all is well.
Nice to see many of the old faithful Saints fans there.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I picked the sweep in the weekly contest. I picked it the wrong way, but it sure feels good to be proven wrong!!!!!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Huge weekend. I doubt any of us saw a sweep coming. In typical ECAC fashion, spots 2-12 are pretty bunched together, and anything can still happen. Hopefully that nuclear meltdown at Cheel can become a launching point and finally got these guys to realize you need to play no less than 60 hard minutes on Fridays and Saturdays to be successful.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

what a full weekend.... i drove to Dartmouth for the game, but slurped down 4 dozen wings, 2 quesediLLas, and 6 pitchers of Molson at Buster's bar in town. i guess i tried to walk to the arena, but passed out in the parking lot. when i woke up on saturday, my pants were gone and i had thrown up in one of my shoes. turned out it was actually sunday! i must have been blacked out all day on saturday, i have no idea what happened.

Amazing. You just described my entire junior year.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

So it looks like Coach Carvel may be ready to make the leap forward from the NHL to the ECAC after all.

It's a good thing that the games for this weekend are at Appleton. You should be able to make the walk from the Hoot to Appleton ok.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I wanted to wait several days before posting my thoughts on this past weekend. I’ve no clue if any of the players or coaches on the team read anything posted on USCHO but, if any of you do, I wanted to say that I’m very proud of you.

The future remains to be written, but if our Saints make a run going forward, it comes down IMO to a world-class pad save made by Matt early in the 3rd at Dartmouth. Matt is a phenomenal goaltender and we are lucky to have him on our team.

This team is becoming one of my favorites over the past 43 years that I've been a Saints’ fan. It is not the most talented team across-the-board that I can remember over the years, but it may just have the biggest heart. You guys have never quit, and there’s a lot to be said for that.

As to the SLU fan that recently suggested on this thread that he/she was not impressed with the results - to the date of his/her post - under Coach Carvel, I submit to you that “Carvy” was a Team Captain and then a Rhodes Scholar candidate. Enough said.

The sky’s the limit for you guys if you continue to listen to Greg and staff, and continue to work your tails off. I humbly submit that you, “just go for it,” and the rest will fall into place.

Amen, Muskieman. Love the Positive Vibrations. We can do do it!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Way to go Saints! Man was that some kind of effort tonight in the 3rd period. Keep it rolling boys, another big one tomorrow night against Colgate :)

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

That was a sweet victory tonight. The team with apparently far more talent (8 NHL Draft picks to our none) comes into Canton and gets outworked. Was happy to see Essery get the ENG because he doesn't get the credit that our big guns do, but he does everything on both ends of the ice very well (e.g., his PK work is great). Also, we hung in there on faceoffs (34 apiece) and it's not often that Cornell doesn't win the faceoff battle by a large margin, and we had 35 SOG (very rarely does Cornell give up that many). Further, it's been very rare over the years that a Cornell team loses when it has a lead going into the 3rd. The save my Matt on a SH breakaway by Cornell in the 2nd was the turning point IMO.

Complete team effort................kudos to the players and to the coaches.
