St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I thought SCSU played very tentative for most of the game last night. They looked better when they were willing to open it up some and skate rather than just packing it in and trying to keep the puck out of their net. The letter led to them spending long stretches pinned in their own end, especially in the first period.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

How about tonight's game--3-2 loss to Penn State? I see where my new "hero" Molly Illikainen got another goal--but also picked up a 5 minute major and game misconduct towards the end of the contest :(

Thanks ARM for the info yesterday. Keeping a rated team close for most of the game--and losing by only 3--is an improvement on a team that needs a lot of improvement just to be competitive. The loss to Penn State isn't the end of the world, but was a game SCSU could have won. Some of the tentative play will hopefully go away with more games. From what I saw in the exhibition game last week, the Huskies looked quicker, more aggressive with the puck. Home next weekend against Lindenwood.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I thought SCSU played much better on Saturday than they did on Friday. They skated better and pushed a smaller PSU team around. They got some bad luck and ran into a team that is undertalented but very scrappy.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Had to make drive down to Ridder arena, that was the only way to watch as the gophers had no coverage, in this day and age, unacceptable .
BU took the play to The huskies early on, think it was 9-0 in shots before the 10 minute mark, Friend did her job and kept the huskies in it until later in the 3rd, unfortunately BU got some breaks and outstanding finish from their high end forwards. Liked what I saw from the transfers ,Lexi is a very good skater and likes to join the play, Molly is a player that can put up some offensive numbers, and I thought her line with Ericksson and Pena was the huskies best all weekend. They created chances, scored and had a highlight reel (PenaI I think) one timer out of the air that hit the post. like what I see from freshman Ericksson, she's skilled, can make plays in tight.spaces, still undecided about some of the other freshman, it will take time for us fans to get to know all the players.
Penn State probably did not deserve the win but they will take it. Molly, Ericsson and Pena were again very good, I would have liked to seen more from Hespenhides line, I'm not, sure if their I s enough chemistry on that line just yet, I'm not sure if Spataro is the right fit on that line, she had shots but none threatened the twine. Speaking of shots, miss Hamner again had a lot of shots, i just wish she would try to make a play for her team mates more often than shoot weak shots from the blue line, she did make a really nice play to set up Pena for a one timer snap shot. Captain Hamner I should add, I didn't know who the captain was this year, solid choice.

The major for kicking was on the near boards below me, so I didn't have the best view, but my impression was that Illikainen was trying to free the puck along the rail in the closing seconds and elected to use her skate to do so, with a Penn State player down. The referees discussed it a bit before making the call, so my guess is that it was more of a reckless play than a malicious one.

My hubby would like to add, he really likes the new freshman Brittany Anderson, patient with the puck, makes the smart play on her end with the puck.

I picked the Gophers, Sioux, Badgers and Huskies to all sweep this weekend. Yes I said the Huskies. I was actually in the building when the Huskies last swept a series, and interesting enough, it was also Lindenwood. If memory serves me, I think the Huskies won all 4 meetings with Lindenwood that year.
The Coaching staff still trying to figure out the teams lines, think they might be some new line pairings this weekend. The "top" line of Spataro, hespendhide, and Ness didnt quite gel, maybe they stick with the same lines to start and see what happens. I have a feeling we might see last years freshman line, Pena, Hespy and Saelens back together, maybe Ericsson, Illkanen, Ness as a line. Those 6, maybe throw in Spataro in that mix, those will be your 6-7 that make up the top 2 lines.
Go Huskies!!!!
Disclaimer- as fans we throw players names on these boards, give our opinions, thats what rabid fans do. I do realize, these girls are young women, still learning, trying their best, playing better than I could ever dreamed of. The competition at the D1 level is so competetive, we know that. I guess what Im saying, we have our (hubby and I) opinions, some right, some wrong, no matter what we ever say, we love these girls!!

... maybe Ericsson, Illkanen, Ness as a line.
IMO, Ness needs someone who is faster on her line. Mott supplied that speed to mesh up with her last year. Otherwise, Ness comes into the offensive end and she is alone, and she doesn't really have the game to score when she's one on one or one on two. I might be tempted to try Slattery up front with Ness.

Hmm , lets leave Ms Slattery on defence, they tried moving one of their top skating defenders last year, Ms Hamner, that didnt work out too well. Hespenhide and Spataro both are better skaters than Mott, so I dont think thats the issue.
Mott had a better all round game than Spataro, thats probably a bigger issue.
Our picks..
Line 1. Ericsson Illkanen, Pena
Line 2. Sealens Hespenhide , Ness
line 3. Spataro, Funk, Brodt
Line4 Arbogast, Johnson, Redford.
GO HUSKIES.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Solid 2-0 for the Huskies, they came out really jumping early on, as the game went on both teams settled to a fairly even game, huskies probably had the better scoring opportunities , and did manage a nice goal from Slattery, she took a really nice pass from Illkanen and buried the puck on the blocker side. I thought the Ness, Illkanen , Pena line was the huskies best all night , Pena was finally rewarded for her efforts late in the third with a nice deflection .
Calling a 3-1 game today!
Go huskies !!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Well, things unfortunately got back to the "old" days for a little bit today--Huskies fall behind 4-1, and eventually lose, 5-3. The Huskies really reverted to old behaviors in the second period, and Lindenwood, behind their excellent goaltender Hansley, dug in and hung on for the win. SCSU sr. forward Amanda Arbogast is finally getting more ice time and proved her worth with a very strong two-way game and also scored two goals for the Huskies.

Great to see Amanda pitch in with a couple of goals. Coach Rudd recognized that she was playing well and put her in the top line ,it was a great coaching move. I'm not sure why you chose "finally as the word to describe her play on the top line, lets not forget, she's scored 3 goals in her previous 3 seasons, she a good two way role player, not sure if we should expect much more than that. I'm not sure if that's where she belongs long term, you need a more skilled finisher on your top line.

All I meant by "finally" is that she is getting more ice time this year. I have always felt she is a good two way player, but never have felt that she would be one of the best scorers on the team. A 3rd or 4th line player can be an extremely important role player on a team. So, good that she is getting more ice time, and great that she contributed on the score sheet. She always seems to compete, and I hear she has a great attitude and is a good teammate.

I see what you meant, yes I agree! This team has not had much success in the last few years, it's nice to see some players have some individual success, even if it's for one game, specially the seniors. It will be interesting to see what coach Rudd does next game, does he stay with Amanda on the top line or does he go back to Pena. I would like to see a checking line that includes Amanda, maybe Funk and Spataro,

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I mainly watch the Gopher women's team, recently I have had a couple opportunities to watch the Huskies. Some nice additions to the team this year. I was curious to watch the Huskies with new coaching staff. I know there was a lot of excitement for them. What I saw: great goaltending, good defense, good scoring opportunity by forwards. All the ingredients needed to be more competitive in the WCHA than last year. However, their coaching staff plays everybody equally. I feel that SCSU will not win in the WCHA that way. The gophers have not even been dressing a fourth line. College women's hockey IMO is a three line league. In the one game, SCSU fourth line had over 10 shifts. Fourth lines, IMO should be used to rest players periodically, or used on PK if they are good killers. But overall, too many shifts by a fourth line just keeps your goal scorers off the ice.
