Re: SOLDIER FIELD 2013 • Wisconsin vs. Minnesota & Miami vs. Notre Dame

Here's a fact: The ice dictated the play of the game yesterday. You can't agree with that? Don't let that door hit ya on the way out.

An opinion? It dominated on how the game was played.

Another fact: MN is still going to make the tourney.
Yet another: MN is the higher ranked team and should beat teams like WI.
And another: WI plays a style that is conducive to beating teams like MN.
Finally: I don't want another outdoor game unless the ice and weather are perfect settings for such a game.

There's 5:1 in one post.

Edit, to make it 5:2: when the puck bounces like a basketball on the ice, goaltending goes out the window, because you're just throwing darts blindly at that point.

The ice was one variable in the equation. There were others too. It magnified the importance of goal tending and the Badgers have a better one between the pipes.

I think we'll be ok in net. Too bad you guys don't have anyone to put the puck in the net on a regular basis. Maybe you wouldn't be watching us play in the postseason this Spring ;)

I am pretty sure they are the same person. There is no way two distinct people could take internet message boards so seriously

Oh no, Dubbie could never say the things about Minny that VW will, even as an act.

Easy. Dissociative Identity Disorder (sorry...I am putting off studying for a psych test)

It's a tough distinction that you're trying to make here. You're saying that UW could have won on good ice but also that having it on bad ice made it a crapshoot. Well, if UW could win on good ice, then they could win on bad. I think I understand that you thought the hockey itself was terrible, but by adding things like it made the game a crapshoot it implies that it was simple luck that carried the day.

I agree with you whole-heartedly that it was terrible hockey to watch. Just brutal and not only not representative of NCAA hockey, but also not representative of pond or outdoor hockey.

Part of what makes pond hockey so much fun is that you (usually) don't have someone trying to separate you from the puck or separate your head from your shoulders. The pond is all about free-wheeling firewagon hockey where the deke and the dangle carry the day. You can even look down at the puck from time to time with no worries.

There's no dump and chase or getting a lead and clogging up your zone to hang on for a win. There's no checking. Clutching and grabbing are frowned upon.

I doubt very much that the Gopher players would say that they had a blast playing the game as Harley said. I'm guessing the event itself was a blast, but the hockey was probably very frustrating. If the Badgers had lost, I'd think that they would have been frustrated by it too.

I'm in favor of the Badgers never playing in another of these - and we're 3-0.

It's not hockey - neither true pond hockey NOR organized hockey. It's a dull, sloppy, crappy hybrid of the two that combines the negatives from each instead of the positives.

That said, they were keeping score and UW did win, so at least there's that.

The underlined parts of your post are my points. Good or bad ice, WI plays a style (and was facing a rival, as we are to you, so energy is amped a bit more than normal) that can beat the Gophers. I wish that the game was more based on skill than conditions of the ice. That simple.

I said that going in - bad ice is an equalizer. Still don't agree that it made the game a crapshoot though.

I believe that playing the conditions properly (pucks deep, pucks to the net, crash net), not allowing the other team to do the same, getting timely saves and sheer will were more important than the conditions. In fact doing those things made the conditions a bigger factor than they would have otherwise been.

Sure, the puck off the leg was lucky, but that puck was put on net and sometimes you create your own luck. It was also fortunate (if not lucky) for the Gophers that our post/crossbar shots didn't go in.

I wish the game was more fun to watch. It was only fun because of the outcome. Beyond that, it was god-awful boring - both ways, although watching Helgeson go goon was at least entertaining (not whining, thought it was hilarious). That's a BIG dude.

We probably agree on a lot more about Sunday's game than we disagree.

Probably. And Helgy going goon, I was really surprised that he didn't get called for that late hit. I thought for sure a penalty. If there are quirks in the game/ice...fine. IMO, I thought it went beyond that, hence my emphatic rantings. The first period was about the only passable period, and from what I saw on GPL, I was in the minority. Some people were having conniptions about the condition of the ice (and to remind the less knowledgeable posters, it was 0-0 after 1).

Wasn't just that hit. He had a burr under his saddle for a while there. :D

I just don't understand it. I know some very nice Gopher fans and even Sue fans. Met some cool ones at the game yesterday too, but on the internet they are all *******s. Get out of your parent's basement and quit trying to win an internet message board egotistical battle and research some facts. How about you all post one fact before you post your wild opinions. If we get a 1 to 1 ratio by the end of this thread, I'll keep posting here. Otherwise.. ta ta.

Here's a fact for you - Paul Kariya averaged 1 point per game in his career. Exactly 1.000000000000000000000 point per game. 989 points in 989 regular season NHL games. That's a fact.

This is why I rarely post here anymore. Just a ****ing match. How about people bring some facts and logic to the table. Bye bye uscho. Back to reality.

Facts? OK.

Gophers and their fans suck.

Badger fans are well-intentioned and fairly high-functioning slopeheads who leave their shoes on when they come into your house, tracking mud and cow shat on your floor.

Sioux fans are well groomed, humorous but not trite, strong but not bullying, possessed of a high degree of hockey intelligence, and dare I say, good looking. All in all, THE MOST INTERESTING FANS IN THE WORLD.

As Kevin Bacon would say, "These are the facts and they are undisputed."

Facts are easy. What to make of them is the hard part.

Re: SOLDIER FIELD 2013 • Wisconsin vs. Minnesota & Miami vs. Notre Dame

I am far too lazy to read back in this thread so I will just post a few thoughts.

I think Gopher fans complaining about the ice conditions is silly. Both teams had to deal with it and sconnie handled it much better than the Gophers did. The number of mishandled passes by Minnesota was far more than sconnie. I wouldn't disagree with anyone who claims that Gopher fans would have complained less if the Gophers had been winning. I think that is totally true. Did ice conditions affect the game? Absolutely. Did it affect the OUTCOME of the game? I'd say not.

It's really too bad more people didn't stick around after the Miami/ND game. The north end of the stadium really cleared out after that first game. It's also too bad the Gophers decided to play like poop until the 3rd period because the atmosphere got noticeably better after the Gophers scored. And that was after quite a few fans left early.

I thought Wilcox sucked. That first goal really set a tone for the game. It's unfortunate because the Gophers really dominated the 3rd.

Overall I thought it was a fun event but the two separate games really took away from the attendance on a single game basis IMO. I'm really glad we went. Our group had a blast, we had seats in the first row of the 300 level and we could see most of the ice. The one complaint I have (which was probably discussed) is shame on the U of M for not sending their band. The other three schools did, why couldn't the U?! I was disappointed and embarrassed when all the fans around us kept asking why the Gophers were the only team that didn't have a band at the event....:o:o

See you shoulda read back. Dirty Sconnies did not give permission for the Gopher Band or Mascot to attend their home game.:p

The march around the Soldier Field concourse would have been fun.
