I suppose I'll have to defer to a fan from Whiner U on that one. After all, you are the experts in whining.

yep, I can recognize when you are whining.

Re: SOLDIER FIELD 2013 • Wisconsin vs. Minnesota & Miami vs. Notre Dame

Anybody else think the outdoor game thing has sort of run its course? I watched ND-Miami yesterday and while it was sort of fun, at least on tv the ice looked lousy at one end? Seemed to get chopped up. I've been to a couple of these, one in Boston and one in Hartford,(and the Hartford one was about as cold as I would ever want to be again thank you very much) and while the first one was fun, I doubt I'd want to go again. Sight lines are much better in an arena. And as a UConn fan from way back, we used to play ALL our home games out doors and I was thrilled when we built a real indoor arena so maybe I'm still trying to thaw out form some of those 12 degrees with a negative windchill games I attended as a student and grad student back in the day.

Re: SOLDIER FIELD 2013 • Wisconsin vs. Minnesota & Miami vs. Notre Dame

Looks like being stuck in between Minnesota and Michigan has given Wisconsinites a little hockey insecurity.

Goldy sent out a tweet saying that because this was a WI home game he wasn't allowed. Not sure if that really is the case but it's possible. The band would have also needed special permission from the hosts to attend a home game.

That being said, the only way I would have gone to this game was if I was part of the band. Only 13 years removed from that so not really a shock I had no interest in going.

So what you're saying is everyone treated the game as a Badger home game except Badger fans.

Power to you. Find that silver lining!

Let's see scoreboard and points in conference go to the Badgers.

Fan attendance goes to the Gophers.

By that logic, you guys probably won the FF last year too. Congrats!

I guess when it's the highlight of your season one game means a little more. Enjoy the win. We'll enjoy the post season ;)

Re: SOLDIER FIELD 2013 • Wisconsin vs. Minnesota & Miami vs. Notre Dame

I find all this talk about the ice making this game a crapshoot to be right on. I mean, I guess according to the players the ice was ok in the first, but clearly they're just being courteous. MN gets a ton of quality shots but even then it's obvious the ice prevents them from finishing.

Of course then in the second the ice really goes to **** and for ten minutes the ice lets Bucky possess the puck, get it in deep and take a bunch of shots on what is obviously a ridiculous playing surface. Then the ice causes MN to get caught in a long, long shift, and Shulze sends one in that the ice causes Wilcox to misplay, and it goes in. What a screw job!

A minute later Haula freezes up (due to bad ice) and watches Ramage's looper go sailing right by him while Wilcox is standing up and out of position. (due to bad ice) and the ice deflects it in. The goofs are down 2-0 and I'm actually feeling bad about it at this point.

Even after these lapses, (due to bad ice) had this game been played indoors under normal circumstances the Gofer's dominating speed and skill would have kicked in and easily brought them back anyway. It's just the ******** ICE!
It's reasonable because you guys are so awesome all the time. Despite (I think) your record in games you're down 2 goals being 0-1-1, I think it's clear to everyone the gofers would have still come back if it weren't for the ICE! (Even though arguably WI is the toughest team in the country to score on 5-5 given how anemic we are offensively and how little time we spend possessing the puck.)

Of course then due to choppy ice, Wilcox gives up another fat rebound and the goofs, hampered again by sketchy ice, watch Little miraculously glide above it untouched into the crease to knock it in. **** THIS ICE!

Clearly the rest of the way tICE prevents the Goofs from coming all the way back like they would have indoors. Even though the number of times they've done this all year is zero. (They have, however, coughed up a 3 goal lead (2 leads, actually) to powerhouse CC. Presumably after CC cleverly opened the doors at World Arena and ruined the ice in the 3rd period. Real classy, CC.)

Anyway, just sayin' I really empathise with the way tICE screwed you guys over. If I were Eaves, I'd petition the WCHA to throw out the results, or forfeit the game. Seriously. If we can't beat a better team by our goalie making some key saves, handling the puck well, and our boys out efforting and winning puck battles for a key stretch of the game, and taking advantage of some lapses by the defense and opposing goalie, then I don't want to win.

**** tICE!!!:mad::mad::mad:

You really are dense. The ice didn't cause WI to win, or MN to lose. It just took out any skill in the game, and made it a "luck of the bounce" carnival game. "Come on down, lob that puck in the air, see which way it bounces! If it bounces your way, you get a goal! Everyone's a winner! Get a goal for that little lady of yours! Wheee!"

Everyone's a winner except Minnesota in this case.

Congrats Brent. One less Badger fan. Keep going and we'll have these boards cleaned up in no time. Can you take care of some Whoiux fans while you're at it?

Honestly Brent, I thought maybe last night you just got hold of a bad batch of Grainbelt. (An oxymoron, I realize.) But you're really hanging on to this thing tight. I think everyone gets that you didn't like the ice conditions. Nobody held a gun to the Goofs head to play this game, if they didn't know, or didn't prepare for what they were getting into, who's fault is that? I'd say it's MN's. (Actually I suppose it is possible Barry pulled a Nickel Nine on tDon to get him to sign. I have no inside knowledge of the transaction.)

But rather than place blame where you think it's due, you choose to make statements about conditions both teams agreed to, and neither had control over, that intentionally or not, diminish the efforts the WI kids put out. If intentional I find it pretty classless from a guy that I had the impression was a lot more fair-minded than that. Insult me all you want, generally I deserve it, but from a fan who supports a great team that's having a great season, I'd think a little charitable restraint towards the effort on the ice would come cheap enough.

I guess if you don't want to consider handling a weak shot, being in position in net, and not coughing up fat rebounds; along with knowing how to not leave a guy unchecked all alone in front of the net when the aforementioned fat rebound occurs as skills, you're right-- For about ten minutes there the gophers didn't have any of those.

The Gofer's could have easily won this game. They made some bad plays and it cost them. It happens. Just ask Q. They out shoot St Larry 32-16 and lose. But it's hardly the flip of a coin. That's even insulting to your own team's effort.

I stand by my opinion that the ice didn't allow the teams to play to their full potential, and affected the game so much that it was a crapshoot. Again, not saying WI would have lost to MN, hell, they almost beat them Fri on good ice. I simply hate when bizarre conditions basically affect the outcome of a game. If this was good ice? Not a peep from me. If WI won on Fri? Hats off to you. MN does lose, and I try to be one of the first to congratulate the other team.

The fact that we lost last night? So be it. Rivalry, on the road, *shrug*. I took my medicine on that. But to pass off last night's game as a representative of the sport...that's laughable.

I just don't understand it. I know some very nice Gopher fans and even Sue fans. Met some cool ones at the game yesterday too, but on the internet they are all *******s. Get out of your parent's basement and quit trying to win an internet message board egotistical battle and research some facts. How about you all post one fact before you post your wild opinions. If we get a 1 to 1 ratio by the end of this thread, I'll keep posting here. Otherwise.. ta ta.

Going to credit the goal tending at all? Rumpel outplayed Wilcox and it wasn't close. If Wilcox could stop a blue line shot without giving up a rebound, Goofs take the sweep home.. good ice or bad ice.

Here's a fact: The ice dictated the play of the game yesterday. You can't agree with that? Don't let that door hit ya on the way out.

An opinion? It dominated on how the game was played.

Another fact: MN is still going to make the tourney.
Yet another: MN is the higher ranked team and should beat teams like WI.
And another: WI plays a style that is conducive to beating teams like MN.
Finally: I don't want another outdoor game unless the ice and weather are perfect settings for such a game.

There's 5:1 in one post.

Edit, to make it 5:2: when the puck bounces like a basketball on the ice, goaltending goes out the window, because you're just throwing darts blindly at that point.

It's a tough distinction that you're trying to make here. You're saying that UW could have won on good ice but also that having it on bad ice made it a crapshoot. Well, if UW could win on good ice, then they could win on bad. I think I understand that you thought the hockey itself was terrible, but by adding things like it made the game a crapshoot it implies that it was simple luck that carried the day.

I agree with you whole-heartedly that it was terrible hockey to watch. Just brutal and not only not representative of NCAA hockey, but also not representative of pond or outdoor hockey.

Part of what makes pond hockey so much fun is that you (usually) don't have someone trying to separate you from the puck or separate your head from your shoulders. The pond is all about free-wheeling firewagon hockey where the deke and the dangle carry the day. You can even look down at the puck from time to time with no worries.

There's no dump and chase or getting a lead and clogging up your zone to hang on for a win. There's no checking. Clutching and grabbing are frowned upon.

I doubt very much that the Gopher players would say that they had a blast playing the game as Harley said. I'm guessing the event itself was a blast, but the hockey was probably very frustrating. If the Badgers had lost, I'd think that they would have been frustrated by it too.

I'm in favor of the Badgers never playing in another of these - and we're 3-0.

It's not hockey - neither true pond hockey NOR organized hockey. It's a dull, sloppy, crappy hybrid of the two that combines the negatives from each instead of the positives.

That said, they were keeping score and UW did win, so at least there's that.
