Re: SOLDIER FIELD 2013 • Wisconsin vs. Minnesota & Miami vs. Notre Dame

Just an FYI to anyone driving down for this... Parking will be $30 for this event... Welcome to Soldier Field and the great city of Chicago
Yeah, that doesn't really sound like thaaaaat much. In a city like Chicago and with the train system they have, I won't be driving anywhere.

I was going to get tickets for this but instead opted for the Friday night game...I'm concerned UMN is going to stomp UW on national t.v. sunday and pretty much embarrass the program really. 6-2 or something like that.

Not gonna happen. Fear not. Both games will be competitive.

I agree. Wisconsin is a solid team defensively, and are always good at slowing down the pace of play and preventing the Gophers from playing the fast transition game they want to play. I think both of these games will be close, low scoring affairs.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't have a good feeling at all about this weekend but in particular the 2nd game. UW has shown no fire at all in games they MUST win this season (which has been pretty much every game since the x-mas break)

Negative...after their abysmal start, all games after Christmas break were MUST wins for the BADgers.:D 8-2-2 this half is the best run the BADgers have put together all season. Twice as many OT games than the Gophers though, an indication they're not really burying teams early. I expect both a defensive and goalie battle. But the Gophers should have the clear edge on offense and the PP, IF they play with a sense of urgency.

Its hard to say about the first game. That could always be a bit freewheeling. But the novelty and exposure of the second game should make it more defensive.

Miami = defense

I don't know about that. We played outdoors as often as we could growing up. All day on the weekends.

For some kids, sure. For others, it's not even a choice - they have no opportunity to play outside where they're from. I went to school with Jay Williams, and I can assure you he didn't play much (or any) outdoor hockey growing up without travelling. Meanwhile in Madison, there are outdoor rinks all over the place. I've seen local kids play at Vilas park...it's just different.

I suppose it also depends on what specific part of town you're from. If you're a kid within walking distance of an outdoor rink, you're much more likely to play outdoor hockey all the time than a kid whose neighborhood isn't right by an outdoor rink.

I was simply pointing out what you just said, that it depends where you are from The statement made was that kids are more likely to play basketball outdoors. That is far from the truth in some places. In Minnesota, kids are far more likely to play hockey outdoors than basketball as there are FAR more outdoor rinks than basketball courts. I never said this is true everywhere.

In the suburb I grew up in, there are 10-15 outdoor rinks, but I can't think of a single outdoor basketball court. I'm sure it's different in other parts of the country.

All you need is a hoop on your driveway.

I guarantee that there are far more kids playing basketball outdoors here than hockey. If that's not true in Minnesota, I certainly won't argue about it.

Or a backyard rink. Plenty of those where I grew up too.

I'm sure it's close as I'm sure plenty of kids shoot hoops in their driveway too. I just didn't agree with the premise of the comment that not many kids play outdoor hockey anymore. Couldn't be farther from the truth where I am from at least. In addition to pick-up games and shooting around with friends, we even had outdoor team practices. Though, that isn't as true since EP added two more indoor sheets of ice at the community center since my playing days. With three sheets of ice there now, it's much easier to find indoor ice.

We had outdoor practice Monday and again tonight for my bantam son. Of course when he was a mite most of the practices and games were outside. There are also 3 sheets at Braemar and we get ice at Richfield, Breck and Mariucci during the season, still need outdoor ice.

Yeah, we played a lot outdoors too, or rented ice at Shakopee, Breck, etc.. a lot. I'm in Milaukee now and outdoor ice here is non-existent. Really makes me miss home.

Maybe this event would be more appreciated in Minnesota.

I just think that Minnesota is different in regards to the hockey culture.

There's good hockey here, but it's more like a cult-following for those who do it. Certainly not mainstream.

Up there, unless I'm understanding things wrong, it's part of your broader culture.

Speaking of backyard rinks, here's the one that I maintained at our old house for about 5 years.

Did this until the boy was a pee wee or so and then we moved to a new house where the pitch of the backyard was too great. By that age, him and his buddies were more interested in xbox than playing hockey outside anyway.
