Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Not that it means much, but Sports Illustrated had Canada winning the gold in Team Figure Skating.

...
Really? Surprises me. Russians seemed to have no weak links, and that's key in a team event. Also a decided home ice advantage.

I think they figured that Canada would be better in Men's by a spot or two, and Ice Dancing by a couple of spots, while Russia would only be better in Pairs by a spot, and Women's by a spot or two. Essentially, Men's and Women's would cancel each other out, and Canada would do better in Ice Dancing than Russia in Pairs.

Obviously, it didn't work out that way, and perhaps the fact that it was a new sport had something to do to it. SI did qualify their prediction somewhat saying that Plushenko would be the wild card. He performed very well, and Russia walked away with the gold.

To add to the results depression, Shani Davis finished 8th in his bid to threepeat the 1000M speed skating. Another gold to the Dutch.

I thought the threepeat attempt is at 1500m, and 1000m he has always struggled? Or is that backwards....

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

I love some of smug reactions from Canadians: "There wasn't any problems with the refs! She did a good job."

Yeah, good job despite completely blowing a call on a goal, missing too many men on Canada twice, good job. Stay classy Canada.

1000M is his race. He struggled the other day at the 500m event. Probably is entered for th 1500m which has it's final this weekend.

Wild forward Nino Niederreiter scores with 7.9 seconds left to beat Latvia 1-0.

EDIT: Goal now being credited to Simon Moser.

Sweden also holds on to beat the Czech Republic 4-2.

Sweden were outshot 15-5 in the third period but held the lead, because Lundqvist is the f-ing man.

But, if I saw the standings right, he was the fastest American. He entered the 500m just to use it as a warm up to the 1000 and 1500.

Sucks he didn't medal. Boy those Dutch sure have something going. Even blowing away the Korean speed skaters.

I think I had heard that before Sochi the Dutch had never had a gold in speed skating...now they're sweeping podiums.

They had never had a gold in the 500m.

The Dutch have been one of the best speed skating nations ever, and I believe they have the most medals in the history of the sport. Before Sochi, the USA had the most gold medals though...not sure if that is still true.

Not so much. From what NBC has said, the Wiki page outlining their history is accurate. The Netherlands have 85 winter medals, 82 of which are from speed skating (the other 3 were early figure skating medals). Their first gold was for figure skating in 1964, but the first gold in speed skating was 1968 in Grenoble- where they had 3 golds. Followed by 4 in Sapparo (72), one in Insbruck (76) and Lake Placid (80).... Their best year was 6 in Nagano ('98), which they could beat this year.

And the sweeping thing- their first multi-medal in a single event was also in Grenoble- Gold and Silver- Mens 1500, Silver and Bronze Mens 5000 and womens 1500.

They've historically been the HUGE skating powerhouse.
