Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Scarlet-For me the hottest is that Norwegian snowboarder, Silje Norendal. If only i was about 40 years younger (and spike Norwegian). She could probably turn me to stone.;)

She certainly had me enjoying the coverage of Women's slope style last night.

USA women's hockey backup goaltender is also quite easy on the eyes.

Dr. D - believe me, you are in that game....until a little Italian senses somethings up ! I have to agree though...saw her last night in some event that I cant remember, not that it mattered. She took gold as far as I was concerned.

That is what gets the ratings. Statistically, the female demographic would not watch the Olympics in nearly the same numbers without those stories. The male demographic is going to watch regardless.

I don't care if they move some stuff (figure skating, downhill, the other major events) to primetime, but why the hell can't they show other stuff live? You telling me the infomercials at 5:30 am are really a better deal than live Olympic events? Just run the **** international feed if you don't want to pay for your own announcers.

This female finds it dam n irritating. Streaming online would be great but we only have DSL and it stinx. Can't get CBC :( Tevo and fast forward though all the drek is best option so far. Takes 1/4 of the time to watch without all the garbage.

That is what I don't get... Curling starts overnight tonight... NBCSN has the Men's Germany/Canada match Live at 3am... USA Network has the USA/Sweden Women's match Live at 5am... CNBC has the USA/Norway Men's match tape delayed at 5pm tomorrow... Why not show that live? I am sure that there is a good number of us who are willing to watch at Midnight tonight... Casual fans will still tune into CNBC after work tomorrow night... That is really disappointing... I guess they figure that the online streaming is cheaper...

Sharka? something from the Czech Republic just took a nasty spill in slopestyle snowboard...cracked her helmet, and I'm pretty sure she was unconscious while she was sliding down the landing area...

That was insane. I really hope she got an MRI within the next 12 hours after that crash. Remember that girl who people couldn't honor because of the IOC? Wasn't that how she died? Bleeding in the brain well after the crash?

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Oh hey, at least one holder of broadcast rights in North America is doing things right with their coverage....

NBC isn't in business to make people happy. NBC pay billions for the rights and has to recoup that by selling advertising. This is the way they have found works best and it produces the ad revenue needed to make a profit. Because heaven forbid they don't make enough of a profit and the shareholders revolt. Complain all you want. The only way to make it change is to buy stock and go to their shareholders meeting - then they might pay attention. Might.

Sarka Pancochova. I just saw this on NBCSN, That was a fall. Somehow she finished the run, but yeah, she better have had an MRI because that can lead to long-term damage. According to the analyst, the helmet is designed to crack otherwise force builds up inside the helmet and can cause more damage. That was painful to watch.

ETA: She has posted the helmet on Instagram, says she's fine and is getting ready for Snowboard...

While a lot of money is made via ads, I bet that a TON of money is being made via cable subscriptions. Most of the coverage is via cable or interent, and the internet depends on if you have a cable subscription. This is Comcast running the show now, remember. And that may be something to bite them in the rear- with so much coverage of a few events during the time people actually watch TV, they run the risk that nobody really cares enough to watch the coverage that is being offered, since it means that people have to do something.

So, for this olympics, not watching actually is known. The fewer people who sign up for cable to watch, the less money Comcast makes.

On the other hand, they also get credit for offering the service to those who have no interested in watching- just because they have cable.

Jenny knows it is just a harmless diversion(if you believe that I have a bridge for sale for you). I may be getting older but i am not dead-and I think when you stop looking you might as well be. Perhaps it is just me-but this year the Olympics seems to have some real stunners. I may have to reconsider my allegiance from rhythmic gymnastics to snowboarding and the other skiing events.

I'm not talking about time shifting stuff to primetime. I'm talking about not airing certain events, or vast parts of many events, at all. Again, you can't tell me those 3 am infomercials are better draws than an Olympic event that they paid billions for the rights for. I understand they're paying as much for the monopoly as anything, but the marginal cost to air something live that won't be shown elsewhere anyway at 3 am is miniscule.

Just watched too That was impressive. Not sure she lost consciousness but actually that is not an indicator for seriousness of concussion. Not every crack on the head results in catastrophic injury. Yrs ago one of UML guys got blown up mid-ice. Out cold, regained consciousness but couldn't remember English (was French kid). 2 hrs, an ER visit and 1 CT scan later he was back in the rink, feeling awesome. Never had any other sx. A few yrs later another kid got the slightest hit, no LOC, didn't even come off until after shift. 11 months to recover, being completely compliant with everything and seeing the top Doc in the country on concussions

If she is OK, the CT could wait until later.

I'm still puzzled as to why there's no checking in women's game. I remember watching in 2010 with my step-daughter and she said she loves hockey, but was wondering why they weren't checking. I told her the women weren't allowed. Her answer. "Well that sucks!"

When I was coaching at NYA we had a girl playing D on the JV boy's team (she was the star of our girl's team and her travel team). I remember hearing a kid from the other team bragging how he was going to deke her out and score a goal. In the first period, he got the puck in the corner, looked up and there she was. He made a move and she was waiting for him. As he spun around and collapsed to the ice you could see him thinking, "I just got knocked out by a girl." Some of those women can really hit. It would be a much different game if they were allowed to but I don't think it will ever be allowed.

I think it stinx too. What the heck is the matter with those people that they think girls/women can't hit??

No, I think people know they CAN hit hit; however the female body may not stand up to receiving those hits. To be fair, there are few men who can.
