SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

The weekly release has been going out every Tuesday during the season well before I got here, and still continues. If the local media chooses not to do a story, it's not because they don't know.

None of this really addresses the real problem though - the comatose fan base who do show up and who cheers SNC goals like the gallery politely clapping when Tiger taps in a six-inch putt for a bogey on the 18th.

I agree. I do not have an answer for this but will do my personal best to get our section going this weekend.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

I would venture to say that SNC sports get their fair share of coverage in the local media. I am sure the school would like more but if you compare the coverage SNC gets to that of Lawrence, Ripon, Marian and even UWO - a school five times the size of SNC - I think the knights fare pretty well. Certainly none have their own TV deal for games.

While more can be done, I have been around the school for 25 years and four athletic directors (or is it 5). While they have influence, watching sports just has never seemed to be a student priority. Without local support - the community and alums etc - you wouldn't see near the attendance you get. I don't have a specific answer on how to change it; it's just how the campus is "wired"

I have a really dumb question. When did the tradition begin in hockey of not announcing a home team goal until after the next stoppage in play. I mean, it is really tough to get revved up again when a home team goal isn't announced until 2 minutes later. Not blaming you Dan, but just asking.

Next, as you can see by the small number of my posts I don't comment very often because there are many people far smarter than I whom I would rather listen too. However, I have a couple of points too.

Dan, you mentioned when you had a student fill in for you and that you got complaints about his music. You know, since the Bill Clinton presidency this country has become a bunch of whiners. I thought the music that night was really good. But as you said Dan, just because I like something doesn’t mean everyone else will. There are songs you play that I don’t like but you know what, I wouldn’t do your job if you paid me because I wouldn’t be any good at it. Maybe add one or two more of the current pop hits (oh, and some Johnny Cash) but other than that keep doing what you’re doing.

Second can we please stop pointing the figure at the students? I miss their enthusiasm too but if you continue to criticize them why would they even think about coming?

Next, someone mentioned the crowd of 7000 at the Gamblers teddy bear toss. Without doing any real scientific analysis, I looked at a website called hockeydb.com for the Gambler attendance numbers from the 1996-97 season thru 2011-12.

From 1996-97 thru 2000-01 when the Gamblers played at the arena the average attendance was 3217. Since then (the Resch was built in 2002) the Gamblers average attendance is 3433—the teddy bear toss is a great event but it is not the norm for that team. I’ll make some enemies but quite honestly since Don Granato left and since that team moved to the Resch I don’t think the hockey is that great.

In addition, someone else pointed to such things as a new sound system (a bad one doesn’t keep fans away and new one won’t bring more in)—liquor –an absolutely terrible idea in my opinion. Go to a Green Bay Deacons game where the beer is cold and there is plenty of it—but there are few fans.

Theme nights—not a bad idea maybe. I could see that. Not sure what or when but it sounds like there are a few really talented people who have those answers.

And lastly, several people have mentioned Eau Claire hockey crowds. With no disrespect to the city or their team, what else is there to do in Eau Claire? They don’t have a D1 college program to compete with, or the Green Bay Gamblers, or the Green Bay Blizzard, or the Green Bay Packers.

I get what everyone is trying to say but I go for the great hockey, the camaraderie of the fans and the people in my section and a chance to continually learn more about this great sport and be a part of one of the truly great D3 hockey programs in the country.

I ‘ll admit I am not the loudest but will try and do my part too going forward—this is such a fantastic program and I say enjoy it. One day the word retirement is going to come from a certain head coach and then we’ll all be saying, ”remember when?”

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Hey, there's songs I play that even *I* don't like! I had someone complain once that I played too much Johnny Cash so the next game the entire first period was all Johnny. Maybe I should do that again. ;) Seriously, our fan base is older, so I play more 70s and 80s and even some moldie oldies. The, um, below-average sound system at the CCC can't handle a lot of the bass in the new stuff. On that system the newer pop stuff sounds awful. Not excuses, just a thought process.

The St. Norbert student body at basketball tonight was at an all-time fever pitch at Schuldes. It took a Twitter challenge from the Ripon students to do it, but they answered the bell. That was a good sign. Even the much-maligned SNC AD went over and high-fived the students near the end of the game. The only time the students matched this at hockey was the NCAA game with Bethel in 2007, again because they had to meet the Bethel students' energy. Prior to tonight, they deserved the criticism they got this year. But they answered the bell tonight. Hopefully they do it again tomorrow, twice.

P.S. - I wait until the next whistle to try and get a good crowd reaction during the stoppage. Maybe I will try it differently tomorrow.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Dan, you are one of the truly great assets of SNC. I wonder how many people know of the double duty you sometimes pull this time of year when home basketball games and home hockey games sometimes fall on the same day. And as a fan, you can tell you really enjoy it. Not to mention the weekly information releases which are awesome.

As I said keep doing what you're doing.

Oh, and if the local media chooses not to come it is their loss.

Thank you. It's busy but working with great people like Tim Coghlin, Rob Morgan, Gary Grzesk and Connie Tilley, they all "get it." Makes my job easier than it otherwise would be working with high-maintenance personalities. I don't go to work every day, I go to school. St. Norbert College is a special place.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Dan, you may be at Schuldes already working but I hope you are challenging the students on Twitter or some other venue for both games because they were excellent last night.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

I'll see what I can do over in section B about the noise. Last time I said I was gonna stand for the whole game to make everyone else get on their feet I had about 50 people tell me to sit down.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Good size crowd and it was better but not what you'd hope for. Gritty win for the team. I didn't think it would come easy and it certainly didn't.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

A great game by two very strong teams. It is a shame that the officiating was at an all time low. 4 referees that are not on the same page and in my estimation cost SNC not one but two goals due to their poor performance. Much better crowd in size and noise from the students section. The oldsters gave a better effort but I think that 5 hour energy drinks should be passed out to them before the games. Nice music Dan even though I did not have any issues with the play list before.

SNC will have their hands full next Saturday but I am hoping for the upset!

It was interesting had four guys sit behind us from the Appleton area, one apparently had referred before and honestly agreed with some of the very missed calls.
Even my husband yelled and I always tease he says nothing unless it's REALLY bad.
Thought we came out strong, so looking forward to a great final Peters Cup Saturday out west; rather sad though to know it's the last one...........

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Wish I could have been there but I was able to watch UWEC's video stream and listen to Tim D's audio. I thought the first score by SNC was absolutely huge. It seemed to stun UWEC a little. SNC played aggressive on the forecheck all night, attacked hard and Jake was awesome! To the SNC fans that made the trip, you came thru louder than the Eau Claire fans all game--FANTASTIC.

By the way, to the SNC woman, hats off-- 3-2 winners in OT to take the O'Brien Cup. What a ride!!!

Great performance from SNC last nite. I thought that their back checking was awesome...probably the best all this season.
Really slowed up the Blugolds in the neutral zone.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

It was another great evening of snc hockey. A great crowd of our fans including Cheri o'brien and Dale and Candy and RIck Petersen, oh and Hammerbecks were there too. It is always nice to see parents from past years still following the team.
Great play all around!

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Glad I was able to make the trip for the final Peters Cup. They really did a good job of keeping an excellent Eau Claire squad in check. Jacobsen was seeing the puck very well and I was pleased with the overall team defense in front of him. Like Pete said, the forwards did a heck of a job hustling back to backcheck. Whether the forwards were getting there to slow things up or the defense knew they could step up and challenge because someone would cover for them, I thought SNC did a great job of clogging up the neutral zone and not letting Eau Claire hit the blueline with any speed.

I was very pleased with the SNC group who made the trip and the Eau Claire folks handled the new experience well and were very respectful. It was really cool for Coach Morgan and the gals to be able to show up later in the game on their way home from River Falls. They rightfully looked so proud and joyful. Must be a lot of fun being a part of that team right now.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Back from Eau Claire. Last nights game was one of the best games that I have ever witnessed by SNC and any opponent. The venue was electric and SNC was clearly up to the task at hand. A complete team win by all that shut down Eau Claire and any neutral zone speed. Great fan base from the SNC faithful that made the trip. I believe that we were loud and even louder when the SNC women champions showed up in the third period. Congrats SNC women, I believe that you will see bigger crowds moving forward. As far as the NCAA pairings, I am hoping for two Western Qtrs. as I feel that both teams are clearly two of the very best that D111 will see this year. Go SNC!

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Well, it's official! SNC will host the Qtr. final game at the CCC on Saturday night against the winner of UW Eau Claire/St. Johns winner. I hope that the SNC faithful that made the trip to Eau Claire can all make it to assist on crowd participation at the stone. We need the students and oldsters to show up to be loud and proud. I hope that SNC hockey gets maximum exposure this week on the local news media outlets to insure a packed and loud building. Go SNC!
