SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Here are a few solutions to think about:
1.) Invest in a new sound system, CCC system is absolutely terrible
2.) Obtain a liquor license like the Hobbs has in Eau Claire during their games.
3.) Updated the music selection
4.) Create theme nights for students (Whiteout, Provide thundersticks, Unique costume themes, ect.)
5.) The ultimate would be to build a rink on campus; it would definitely change the atmosphere inside the rink and gain more attendance of students. Obviously this a far-fetched idea right now but down the road, if or when it happens I think I would really benefit the program from a student’s perspective as well as a player.

3 - Interesting. Any requests? I try to keep our music library updated but play mostly older stuff because we have an older crowd. One time my student spun the tunes and played hip-hop and harder stuff and I got complaints.

Not a music request, but I was hoping you could answer:

It's easy for you to sit behind an alias and take shots at people when you don't have to be accountable for what you say, especially when you don't know what you're talking about.

I can tell you that I made a personal effort about 3-4 years ago to loosen, if you will, any restrictions on the student section. I was successful in that effort except for the part about students pounding on the glass, which is nothing anyone would have issue with. The previous two years the student sections have been good. This year not so much, and it has nothing to do with the athletics director. This is, currently, a particular group of students that is mostly apathetic to all sports - not just hockey. We also don't have a large student body like the WIAC schools. I'm sure our student section is comparable to CSS and the MCHA on most any given night. The first game of this season was free for students because of the banner raising. Additionally, the first 240 students who want a ticket to Saturday's game can get a free one - and this is being debated whether to continue for next year. So it is being discussed and looked at. We aren't just a bunch of dummies over here.

If you have a problem with anything then take a meeting with the AD or even myself and maybe you'll learn something. The bottom line is though that you can't make people care. Just because you or I like something doesn't mean someone else does.

Question on above - What is being debated the offering of any "free" student tickets or the limit of 240?

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Any road games I've attended in the past, students get in free, WIAC or not; CSS offers a free bus ride as their rink is off campus also, at least the game we attended once before was that way.
Eau Claire was JAMMED that Friday night as friends that came also have a daughter attending there and she said the campus was plastered with signs about the game.
Also I found the "lady knights" goal club or whatever their name was Saturday night interesting as our past efforts to create a blue line club were squashed.
I sit in Section E and later in the third tried to get the lets go knights chant going, which was short lived; anyone who sits near me can attest I am LOUD, but it takes a bunch to get it noticed throughout the building.
A final thought - overall crowds have appeared very small this year, not sure why; same solid group of season ticket holders; not sure if this is a local media not talking about the team or what, but this town is missing out on watching great hockey.
Oh - and of course cookies will be available Saturday evening......:D

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

I think the success the last 5-7 years of high school hockey in the area has taken away from our crowds. Before everyone went WIAA and it was WAHA, our crowds were much bigger. If I'm watching my son play twice a week, the last thing I'm going to do is go out to another hockey game if I have some free time.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Maybe we can get Bj's mom back this weekend and have the goalie moms lead the crowd in cheers!!!
Does anyone notice that goalie parents seem to recognize each other at ice rinks? It's a secret club that members recognize each other by looks (and actions).

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

You also have to take into account the gamblers. Their crowd on Sat. was over 7,000 I think for the teddy bear toss game. But one thing I would like to bring up to you, first I never called anyone at SNC dummies because you all do fine work and I respect that. You said I should try to secedule a meeting with you or anyone else to voice my concerns. In a couple of previous posts by pete99race and GBhockeygal it sounds like they tried. Pete said discussions took place with a group of people even during this off season and GB hockeygal said their efforts to form a blueline club were squashed. Now, I do not know if they met with SNC officials or not or just as a group of interested parties. But at least others are seeing some of the things that I am seeing. Go Knights

Yep - a group met with a certain AD, and let's just say it was one constant NO.............I get it that there are rules, but saw other schools have blue line clubs and they plan in the NCAA too.

I can say that booster clubs walk a very fine line. Most schools will insist that any money goes through their hands, as an example of how things have evolved.

Re: SNC 2012-13 Regular Season Thread

Ok, I will finally bite on the SNC crowd situation and attendance in general even though I wanted to stay out of this due to the fact that this issue surfaces every year at this time.

My feeling on the poor attendance this year is due to a number of issues.
1. Poor economy limits the family income. The limited income is divided into many pots and I am sure that the SNC hockey or any sporting event is a luxury compared to other necessities for many families.
2. Competition from other sporting events in the area on an average weekend is stiff. No disrespect to SNC SID but SNC does not promote their sporting events very well. The dedicated SNC hockey fans are typically at the games most of the time. The casual hockey fans of Green Bay and the surrounding area have options such as the Gamblers, Deacons, and high school sports. Average Joe who is looking for somewhere to go on a snowy weekend does not even think of SNC hockey because they do not even know that a game is going on. The bottom line on this one is that our standard crowds are getting older and SNC is not promoting itself well to get younger and more fans to the games via whiteout games and other promotions. Remember, the Gamblers had roughly 7,000 fans on Saturday night just to throw a teddy bear on the ice after the first goal of the game. Nice promotion that gets the crowd in the door.
3. The "no fun bunch" police of SNC has had an impact on the crowds, primarily the SNC students. I will not blame anyone on this as I understand that well behaved student fans are necessary but you cannot tell me that in the past, this issue was taken way over board. Thank you SNC SID for getting involved on this to improve the situation. Hopefully the students come back and enjoy themselves in a respectful manner.
4. Students should not pay to get into the hockey game. I think that their tuition and expenses that they have to juggle at SNC should be enough. Remember that their price to get in is worth roughly 2 beers at the local establishment. Sad but a true statement for students who are deciding how to stretch their limited entertainment budget on the weekend.
5. The quiet crowds in the remaining sections has and will continue to be a mystery to me. I have and many others in my area have tried get people off of their back sides to cheer. It is sad to see that we have a wonderful product on the ice that is treated like a library or theatre. I think that somehow the noise in your section should be electronically tied into the heating system in your area. The louder and more active you are, the heat in your section goes up! :)

The bottom line is that SNC hockey is the best hockey in town and that it should get promoted this way. As mentioned before by Pete and GBhockeygal, a group of volunteers are available to get involved to assist on some of these issues. As a proud SNC allum and past hockey player, I want to see SNC hockey thrive. I know that this can be done in an effort to make sure that the fan base is as good as the product on the ice.

Two Steps:

1. SNC has to win at home.
2. SNC has to win a few National Championships

If that doesn't work, bring back Tim.

Seriously, Plattsburgh's Stafford Arena could have doubled as a library or theatre, but a few fans and the Student Association along with a couple sponsors have been able to ramp it a alot, still not the Zoo Crew of the 1980's & '90's, but light years ahead of where it was it.

This is the decade of SOCIAL MEDIA - Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Tagged, etc it was enough to bring about the Arab Spring, IMO - it is THE tool to get the word - get the right, motivated student intern(s), and see what happens.

I disagree with this only because UW-Green Bay spends an awful lot of money on advertising and their men's basketball crowds are at or near a 20-year low. Should they spend more money?

IMO, any money should come, at least in large part (with perhaps some matching contributions from admin) from the student association (SA), if the sport and school pride aren't enough to drive the SA into action then perhaps the admin ought to look into a sport or activity that will. There has to be local businesses who can't afford to run with the big dogs, but do have some money to spend, work a deal with some of them. A SA lead group, with under a SID advisor should be able to do wonders. Lighting a fire under the students isn't liekly to happen overnight, but it can happen.

Money does not always have to be spent to be in front of the crowd. On most nights, the local news have some feature on a GB girls basketball, mens b ball, gamblers, or local sports story. This is rarely the case with SNC hockey until they reach the NCAA's. A little free self promotion can go a long way.

The weekly release has been going out every Tuesday during the season well before I got here, and still continues. If the local media chooses not to do a story, it's not because they don't know.

None of this really addresses the real problem though - the comatose fan base who do show up and who cheers SNC goals like the gallery politely clapping when Tiger taps in a six-inch putt for a bogey on the 18th.
