SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Congrats as well to Wellsy for not only his wins last night AND today, but for his Coach of the Year award. In front of over 2,000 and on the road, his Team just defeated now 29-4-0 Cornell at Lynah by a score of 3 to 1 to win SLU's FIRST EVER Women's ECAC Championship. The Team really earned it and, next, it's on to the NCAA's at a school TBD. So, the Women made certain that their season was extended and I hope the Men can do the same the next 2 games.

Congrats to the SLU women. Well deserved championship.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Kudos to Wellsy and the Lady Saints! That is well-deserved and the best thing about it is the program is starting to come back after some rebuilding and is still a young team.

As for the men....what more is there to say other than it is too bad we found another losing streak at the end of the season. That crap call from Ritchie on Dartmouth's third goal was an absolute momentum killer for the Saints but still, our PP was dreadful as was our in zone coverage. I wish it ended better especially for some seniors that were really good guys like Child, Drewiske, Army, Mobley, Moss and whoever else I missed. I know we'll be back and a better team next year, but right now it is pretty hard not to be frustrated with a really tough weekend getting swept at home and outscored 10-4. Based on how this team played during stretches, I know they could have run Dartmouth out of the building. But based on how they played all season, it was tough to guess which team would show up any given night and the wrong team showed up tonight.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

As I post this, they are heading to a second OT in game 2 at Clarkson. Well, our season ended on a tough note and it was an odd season for us with an 0-5 start and a 1-4 finish. Congrats. to the Seniors for representing SLU with class and giving it everything they had - you guys will be missed.

On a positive note, I'm still celebrating what our Women's Team has accomplished. Wellsy and his team deserved it and gets an opportunity to play in the NCAA's. After what we did this weekend, you never know.

On the most positive and important note, I got to talk with Joe just before the Cornell game at Appleton and he looked and sounded great. I hope his health problems are behind him.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Well, obviously it is disappointing to have the season to come to an end so early. Funny how streaky this team was, tending to win or lose in 5 game stretches, we just had our losing streak come at the perfectly wrong time. There is a lot to look forward to next season with these guys, and certainly want to wish the seniors well in all their future endeavors. We might lose a lot of great leadership, but we'll be bringing back the majority of our regular lineup next season. These 7 months will fly by and we'll be prepping for another season before we know it.

Hopefully Joe will be able to come back next season and help the guys make some noise.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Thanks to the seniors for their hard work and dedication. I'll have to get a new golf partner now that Army is moving on. Boy does it go quickly. It seems like it was last season I was watching these rookies named Carden and Drewiske out at the big house.

I agree Brandon I think there is a lot to look forward to. This years freshman class was a good one and if we can develop a bit more depth that can score and shore up the defense a bit I think next year could be a good one. Flanny was almost unstoppable at times this year and if he continues to progress I can't imagine what his upside is?? Carey rebounded nicely from a slow start and I think the key next year will be to develop some scoring down the lineup so teams can't just key on that first line. With all the new systems installed the PP looked awesome at times and with the skill level of Hughes, Martin and a few more of these boys I can see teams definitely paying for putting us on the PP next year. (Like the Anderson, Fyfe, Gellard days!!!)

This year went by in a blur and while I saw a lot of games I never once made it up to Canton this year (other than for the golf outing). Definitely have to rectify that again next year. Guess the rate increase at the Bentley Inn scared me away this year!! :)

Thanks again to the Seniors..........I hope you enjoyed your time in Canton as much as we enjoyed watching you play.

I wasn't much better.............only made it up to Canton once this season and missed the golf tournament..........the rate increase at the Tupper Lake Lodge did me in.:)

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Well, wouldn't you know it, the Women's Team will play at #4-seeded BC in the opening round of the NCAA's. BU plays at Cornell, North Dakota at Minnesota, and Mercyhurst at Wisconsin. If we defeat BC, we will play the winner of Mercyhurst and Wisconsin in the semis. of the FF this year in Duluth, MN. Here's more details:

Mercyhurst (23-7-3) at #1-seed University of Wisconsin (31-4-2)

North Dakota (22-11-3) at #2-seed Minnesota (31-5-2)

Boston University (23-13-1) at #3-seed Cornell University (29-4-0)

St. Lawrence (24-9-4) at #4-seed Boston College (23-9-3)

Oh I dearly hope the women put the screws to BC. Please let this happen. They certainly got about the best possible draw that they could have, based on the other home teams. Hope they keep their 2nd half run going!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Weird series. I thought that SLU probably had the edge in play for a small majority of the minutes played. But when they made mistakes or had a bad period . . . yikes. And they certainly didn't have their best defensive effort. They definitely couldn't catch a break or a bounce, especially on the PP, which I thought looked much better than the numbers suggest.

But you can't give up that many goals. And the one constant all weekend was Dartmouth's effort. Anyway, I second everyone's thoughts about the senior class and about what SLU has coming back next year. I'm pretty optimistic.

And way to go Chris Wells and the SLU women's team. What a tremendous weekend. Beat BC!!!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Guys,
I wanted to let you all know what a pleasure it has been covering the Saints for the last three seasons. Some of you may already know that I have accepted another job and will be leaving the Times in a little over a week.

I am departing to take a managerial position for 10 radio stations in and around Oneonta, NY. There, I will also be involved in covering Colgate hockey, sometimes even doing play-by-play on the radio. I will surely attend the games when St. Lawrence comes to town.

Covering the Saints has easily been the most enjoyable three years of my young career. I looked forward to hockey season almost as soon as it ended.

From head coach Joe Marsh to the assistants to the players and, of course, you the fans have made it an incredible experience. You’ve consistently motivated me to give you the best coverage possible. I hope you have enjoyed it as well.

When I got into this field, I envisioned getting to know players and coaches on a close to personal level and having full access to the team after games and during practices. St. Lawrence was more than accommodating and I hope I gave the readers everything they could have wanted in my coverage.

Personally, I could have only hoped to meet people of such high quality as Joe Marsh, Mike Hurlbut, Bob Prier and Greg Carvel. They are all everything you said they would be from the moment I started covering the team. St. Lawrence is a special place that I won’t ever forget.

I don’t know who will take over the beat next season or what will come of the blog that has already morphed from “Saints to the Max” to “Casstle of the Saints.” I hope they provide you with even better coverage.

I’ll have one more story, the usual season recap, running in the newspaper this Sunday.

After that, I will be delighted to sit back, follow the Saints as a fan, and finally be able to place on my car the “St. Lawrence University Hockey” license plate frame Chris Wells gave me on my first trip to Appleton Arena.

Dan, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your coverage and work around SLU Hockey. You did a tremendous job and I know all the fans appreciate it. It takes a great deal of time to follow the team and stay in touch, and your coverage made this much easier.

I am also pleased that you "get" what we are talking about. I have been around other programs and have talked to many more that have been around other programs beyond that, and SLU is a special place and the only team I would bother to follow.

Best of luck to you in the new gig and make sure you get regular tetanus shots if you are going to be hanging around Starr!;)

So, now that it is all over other than just being a fan, tell us, on average how many times a week did you see a knowledgeable hockey person in Appleton express utter disgust at ECAC officiating??;) There is a legitimate story in there somewhere about how they recruit refs off the stupid truck.

I hope that the nucleus they have coming back and the talent they have coming in will make you proud next year and beyond. No matter what, they continue to make me proud as sn alum because they do things with integrity in Canton and they approach the game with honest effort and that is worth a lot. The recent hockey alum event in Boston proves SLU hockey lives in the hearts of all who spent time in Appleton and for good reason.

Best of luck to you!

Leckster

Thank you for all the insight you have given us over the past few years, Dan. You took what was already good coverage and enhanced it a good bit. Best of luck with everything involving the new gig, I'm sure you will continue doing great things there.

It was just about every week. The problem with doing a story like that is all the players and coaches are generally worried about the negative repercussions from talking about the officiating. Fines, suspensions and the like would hurt the team more than it would change officiating practices.

I will say I've never seen anyone react like Weninger did when Bob Ritchie called that third Dartmouth goal good on Saturday. I thought for sure he would get a penalty or something.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Thanks Dan for your above and beyond efforts in covering Saints hockey over the past 3 years. Your extraordinary coverage/insight will be missed sorely by Saints fans. Good luck with your new endeavors in Oneonta.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

And all this time I thought I was talking about testicles.

Pretty funny..........good thing you're posting it here and not on some other teams sites as they might have thought you were referring to Brain Cells. :D
Either that or it's a reference to the number of ECAC Referee's you have backed over with your SUV!!!! "Leckster what was that bump backing up??" 'Nothing Mike...but I don't think we need to worry about Dell next season!"
