SLU 2009-2010 Season

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

SLU teams have heart and work hard. I have really only seen an SLU team quit once ever and it was this year at Maine...but the refs and then the score were pretty stacked against them. Whoever works hardest plays as a rule and that sets the table for a lot of good games.

The one time I've seen the team basically throw in the towel was the SLU/Clarkson game from Ottawa a few years ago. That was about the worst overall game I've seen from SLU in my relatively short time of watching them play (compared to the rest of the guys who post here, anyways;) )

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

BC knows about bad bounces, Got6,want more..........hitting post twice in OT against Michigan in 1998 national championship game IN BOSTON, off the post to tie Wisconsin with a second left in 2006 national championship game and off the cross bar against Mich St in 2007 final to take a 2-0 lead which would have put that game away , so, i understand your pain, those were 3 national championships that could just as easily gone the other way........ i was in manchester in 2007 and didn't notice any obnoxious fans from any of the 4 schools represented.........but, what ever. Great win for SLU last night in any event, good luck the rest of the year!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Thanks for the notes Puck Swami! I would have been there if not for all the snow on the East Coast. I wish it was a traditional tourney format and not a showcase...it will be pretty hard to win anything (not that I am looking past UNO at all) after what DU did to them last night with a 7-0 pasting. You have put me in the position of having to root for BC, so that is nauseating!:p

Watched the DU game on FSRM....holy cow are you guys good! Rakhshani and Maiani both had good games, Good to see Gwoz continuing to do well.

Watched that game as well. Denver is scary good. Best team I've seen all year.

After the game, spent some time on the BC and DU Hockey websites. It was particularly scary how many high-end NHL draft choices BC has on its roster. I don't think we have any draft choices on our roster, but the NHL can't measure heart. Excepting the Ottawa and Portland disasters already discussed, SLU has always played with heart and never quits. That's what makes last night's game, and being a Saints fan, extra special.

Am hoping for no letdown today vs UNO. They are going to come out smoking after DU took it to them.

My only complaint about the game in Manchester was the lengthy review in which BC was ultimately awarded their 2nd goal, but it was clear while in attendance (and later while watching a taped telecast) that the whistle had blown at least one second before BC jammed it home. Oh well, I guess BC still scores the ENG and wins it 3-1 instead of 4-1.

I hope SLU and BC meet up again this season because that means that SLU will have made it back to the NCAA's after the near-miss last season. BC will arrive in a very angry mood and SLU would need a near-perfect game to win.

Of course not...SLU Fans are not usually obnoxious!:D I didn't say all, I said many. I know a few BC fans from 2000 that were lucky to walk out of their alive after saying some pretty uncool things to the wrong guys (TimU...referring to Scott Nickerson here that has forearms like Popeye).

Good luck to you the rest of the way. Appreciate the show of sportsmanship!

They didn't quit at Brown either when it was 8-1 Brown on their 18 shots, but I wish they had stopped worried about scoring and started to worry about running guys over in that game. There was a 10-1 game at Clarkson right before Christmas in 1985 too....SLU had 4 of 6 regular D-Men out....Nickerson and Derek Ray had a brief dance at center ice...even in defeat, the heart was evident....and we got them 6-5 in OT about 3 weeks later!:D

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Hopefully the experience from these games will help serve as momentum builders for SLU. If they can hang with the #2 and #5 ranked teams they can definitely beat fellow ECAC foes on any given night.

Unfortunately we won't know if they can skate with DU, with their showcase format instead of a typical tourney format. Oh well, UNO isn't too bad of an opponent either, and we'll see what BC does against DU tonight.

Wow, very strange format (personally not too crazy about). Regardless, a very good overall weekend performance for the Saints!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

My son and I just finished watching the BC vs DU game on TV. It was like watching two pro teams go at it. He remarked that both teams had 18 skaters and very likely 3 goalies who all were even more talented than RIT's Cameron Burt, who we believe is the Tigers most skilled player by far. I remarked that for SLU or RIT to win the NCAA's would require winning four games against teams as skilled as BU and Denver. He just rolled his eyes and said that winning it all would be a very tough nut to crack.

That said, a great road trip for the Saints in Denver. Considering the amount of talent we graduated last year and how the team has responded from the fiasco in Portland, this season so far is among Joe's best coaching jobs ever IMO. And, it appears that Kain Tisi is the man between the pipes for the time being. He was highly regarded when recruited and deserves a ton of credit for sticking with it throughout his career. We have 3 great goalies on our roster.

This team continues to surprise me and future opponents will regret it if they take us lightly. This has been an enjoyable season thus far. I just hope that we can get our PK % to improve and that we find ways to spend less time in the box.

Was delighted to see that Verms made the all-tournament team. I've never seen him take a shift off and he is sure fun to watch.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I agree with you Brian....Tisi is a great kid and nothing would please me more to see him continue to earn and get starts. He has one of the toughest roles of any Saint recruit. He has kept a good disposition and has been a team player. You can't ask for more than that!

BC - DU was a good game with two good teams. How good is Rakhshani...my word!!! Still, I can't believe there was no whistle on the DU GT goal and whatever happened to man in the crease, there was a DU guy on top of the goalie. Still, BC pretty much choked down the stretch. Maybe they were just tired. One of their D-Men was injured in the second and I never saw him come back (Wey). He should have come to St. Lawrence (was offered), so I don't feel the slightest bit bad for him that his team was the only one to walk out without a win or tie!;)

It was a very good weekend for SLU. I'll take that any day.

Finally, I couldn't agree with Joe Marsh more....the shootout is not hockey, it is a side show! Compare that to the 4OT SLU-BU game....absolutely NO comparison! In a consolation game, sure, whatever; but that was not a consolation game last night, SLU was playing for the trophy. And, on that point, man is the showcase a HORRIBLE format!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nice weekend for the Saints.
I was pretty busy this weekend and unfortunately didn't get to listen to either game.
Two games with Niagara (which I think will be tough one's) before we get to the meat of the schedule.
My goodness what does Joe do in net??? This is almost like when Hallas came out of nowhere to get/earn all those starts.

For those interested yes I did attend the Bridgestone Winter Classic at Fenway Park. To say that I "saw" the game might be a bit of an overstatement.....however, I was AT the game. For those of us sitting out in the bleachers it was really more about the "experience" as opposed to being able to really see much. I thought the NHL could have done a much better job of laying the rink out so more people could see. I don't know if it had to do with locker room access or what... but the rink was so jammed in close to the home plate area that seeing from out in the grandstands and the bleachers in particular was pretty difficult. As it was (those who saw the game on TV) there were "obstructions" (those red pods with I am guessing announcers on top) that obscured our view. We could only basically see one half of the ice. The other mystery was they only had the game on one smallish big screen/scoreboard and you really couldn't see well on that either unless the camera zoomed in.
I ran into a guy between periods who was pretty livid. He spent $4,000 to take his family and they were pretty low down in the bleachers and they couldn't see a thing.
Other than that it was a fun experience. There was a lot of pomp and circumsantce before the game including a flyover of a stealth bomber. It was cool to see Bobby Orr and Bobby Clarke do the honorary faceoff (don't know if Clarkie had his teeth in as I wasn't close enough).
The other thing that surprised me was the amount of Flyer fans at the game. I don't know for sure but one police man said the NHL ticket distribution puts quite a few tickets in the hands of the visiting team. I don't think the ratio of Flyers fans was 50-50 but it sure seemed like it might have been 60-40. There was a lot of that hideous orange/black and white in the stands.
The atmosphere was really great. The funniest part was the fans would chant....."Let's go Bruins"....then the Flyers fans would do the "Let's Go Flyers" and this would go on for a bit but it unvariably would end with both teams fans doing a "Yankee's Suck" cheer. Pretty funny.

I'm with you on the shootouts. For them to decide anything or count as a point is just plain stupid. As an analogy, that epic SU-UConn 6 OT hoops game at MSG last March would have only gone 1 OT and then been decided in a slam dunk or a jump shooting contest. And, the fans of both teams would have been cheated. I dread the say that the ECAC adopts a shootout format, but do know what Joe's vote will be on such. Good for him.

I'll take a 3 point weekend any day, regardless of the opponent(s). I have no clue how far SLU will go this year, but nothing will surprise me.

Nice work, SLU.

I'm delighted that you could be there and that the Bruins pulled out the win. The event was sure fun to watch on TV. Clarke did have his teeth in and Orr looked great (still the best hockey player I've ever seen).

That is hilarious about the Yankees; never thought the day would come that Bruins and Flyers' fans would agree on anything.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Brian, Where did you see the all tour. team listed, I can't find it --- Pete

Hi Pete,

It was not listed in the USCHO Recap writeup. I saw the all tour. team listing on TV during the ceremonies following the BC vs DU game.

I hope to see you and your wife soon at Appleton.

A baseball stadium really makes no sense for such an event. There is no place you can put the rink and have the fans be high enough up to see anything. A football stadium does but in Boston that is in Foxboro and the Patriots are usually a contender. They could have put it on the BC football field though or even Harvard or ???

Two great things about that game....

1) the Bruin won;
2) Everyone agreed the Yankees actually do SUCK!!!!:D

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nice trip out to Denver for the SLU Team. Great to see them knock off BC, I just wish they had a shot a DU. It would be nice to see this tournament catapult them into the second half. Go Saints!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Gotta give credit where credit is due: to Wally Johnson for the greatest SLU hockey photo ever! NOTHING in Bob Graham's book (and what a great book it is!) even comes close to this one. Holy Mackinaw!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nice win for you guys. Good to see you took it out on BC and not UVM this time ;) . The only thing that sucks is that the BC loss hurt UVM in the PWR but still nice win and good to see the program there winning some big games.

I'll take it a step further and give Wally Johnson credit for an awesome job at SLU that now spans 33+ years. To serve with excellence and class as the SID at a school that during his tenure has grown to over 30+ sports programs is no small task. And, he does an excellent job as the color analyst during telecasts. SLU is very lucky to have him on staff.

All of his photos are great, so I'm not clear what photo you are referring to. Please advise.

To Leckster - the Yankees do not suck but the NY Giants certainly do. The last two games in weeks 16 and 17 were more embarrassing IMO than THE FUMBLE.:o
