Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Pevs got hyped as one of the most underrated players in the NHL. Just a one-line blurb on him, but at least he's getting some press. (Full article found here.)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Guys, congrats on the win on Friday. You guys won the key 1v1 battles and though Harvard had more SOG, you won the battles in the trenches - where most games in the ECAC are won and lost.

Not sure if this point has been raised, but I thought Petzian was outstanding against Harvard. Harvard did put a lot of shots into his mid-section, but nontheless, he consistently held his ground and his positioning was outstanding.

Given that performance, I was SHOCKED to see Tisin starting against Dartmouth. I know that hindsight is 20/20, but given Petzian's performance, I thought "riding the hot goalie" was imperative for a road game against a desperate Dartmouth team.

Good luck the rest of the way and just my 2 cents....

I think a lot of SLU fans were actually expecting to see Tisi against Harvard for that same reason: he looked like the hot hand after the RPI game. Looks like Joe thought Tisi earned a start, but still wants Petizian to have a chance to get back to being the clear #1. I don't know why Alex would get the Harvard game and Tisi Dartmouth, but there must have been a reason. It paid off in a big way on Friday. Having not seen the Dartmouth game, I have no idea if a different goalie could have come up with a different result.

You are not alone. All of us like Tisi a lot and want to see him get some playing time and he did play well against RPI and had the best stats going into the weekend, but still, after Friday we were all shocked it was not Petizian again. Petizian had one of his better performances on Friday that I can recall. He was tested on some shots for sure.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Got back from practice this morning and got some news on the injury status of a number of players.

Kyle Flanagan is out until Clarkson (we knew this)
Jeremiah Cunningham is also out until Clarkson (thought maybe he'd return this weekend, but Marsh wants him to rest for another week)
George Hughes has a hip flexor injury and he, too, will be out until Clarkson.
Sean Flanagan had his third and final (hopefully) hip surgery this week. He is red shirting this season.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Thanksgiving night 1960 I saw my first SLU hockey game. We lost to Michigan State but I've been hooked ever since.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I can't really remember if it was the first game I saw--actually I doubt it--but over Thanksgiving break my frosh year I saw us BEAT the Spartans. I remember how awed I was that a team from a little school could beat a major state university. And I still am--and incredibly proud of it! Go Larries!

Mine (and my first hockey game ever seen live) was in November of '70. We lost to Laval 4-2 but I, too, was hooked for life. Didn't even know what offsides or icing meant back then and, with ECACHL officiating what it is, still haven't a clue!!!

Well, Leckster will be delighted that the Broncos absolutely destroyed the Giants tonight. Only "good" news for me is that TWC doesn't get the NFL Network, so didn't have to watch the massacre but listened instead. At least I get the NHL Network. As for the Giants, it's looking like "Lose, Lose, For The Draft" might be in order.

I thought that you guys didn't like being called Larries. I know that we had a discussion on this many years ago on HockeyL.

FWIW, the first SLU game I saw was in Troy early in my sophomore year, 65-66, a 4-0 SLU victory. (That was holding it close for that RPI team. :D ) At least it was the first one that I have a program for. If I attended the one the previous season, I didn't buy a program.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Brian, it would be fine with me if the Giants went undefeated for 3 straight seasons IF the Yankees never won again regardless of how much they spent on their payroll!:D I do hate the Giants though...and them stealing an undefeated season from the Patriots did not help!!

I have no idea who SLU played the first time I saw them. It may have been Plattsburgh State....I am pretty sure I remember their first win (in the league) which was against Princeton after they started 0-7 in Joe's first year...and finished 16-15:D!! Have been a college hockey fan since a long time before that from watching D-2 Bowdoin College. St. Lawrence Hockey took it to a whole new level though as I think you could argue the two best recruiting classes ever (both Joe Classes) of 1988 and (my original class) of 1989. There were 5 All-Americans in those two classes and would/should have been at least seven with P. Lappin, Lammens, Yearwood, Hurlbut and McColgan and Baker and McGeough respectively. Still think Baker would have given Lane MacDonald a run for his money on the Hobey in 1989 had he not been injured while leading the nation in scoring at Christmas. I still wonder what might have been had Dietrich and Gustafson not left so early after the 2000 season. I wonder what might have been in 2001.

I don't like it. I don't know what a Larry is!!! It does not bother me, but I prefer Saints or Skating Saints! I would have thought of many names before the Larries that would have worked....St. Lawrence Rivermen or North Stars or even the Laurentians. Still don't know *** a Larry is???

Good one about those Yank-mees.:D

Even with Dietrich and Gusto having left early, I still wonder about 2001 had Anderson and Desrosiers been healthy. Eric had a high ankle sprain and Matt had bruised or broken ribs, but both still played down the stretch. I also wonder about 2000 if the ref. had called a blatantly obvious penalty on BC for a high stick to Gusto's throat area that knocked him on his butt, and would have given us a lengthy 5 on 3 in the 1st period and a chance to go up 2-0. No call was made and seconds later Blake Bellfaiue (spelling?) scores a SHG for BC after Matt catches a rut in the ice. Lastly, I'm sure that Lane MacDonald and Harvard celebrate Thanksgiving each year with Bill Posma (the biggest ******* to ever play college hockey IMO -- I'm just glad I wasn't in Appleton when he slew-footed Baker because I'd still be in jail). Last but not least, I still wonder what might have been had we beat Yale or Princeton in Albany.

Funny thing, but SLU Hockey brings out the best, and the worst, in me!!!:D And, yes, who got paid to come up with the name, "Larries"? Perhaps a CCT Alum. was paid off.

The RPI programs from games versus SLU from the late-60's each have a page devoted to SLU with info supplied by SLU. The team is called there the "Larries." I was in Troy from 1964 to 1974. At some point (I am too lazy to check which year), it switches to "Saints."

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Isn't "Larries" derived from St. "Lawrence"? After all, Larry is short for Lawrence.

First off, congratulations on the Bobcats. I hope you guys go a long way.

I think a more appropriate and creative name would have been the Hoots and/or the Owls, where all Q'Pac fans are welcomed.

We are the Larries when we lose, the Saints when we tie, and the SKATING SAINTS when we win.
