Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

A placebo, it appears, from the way the Sioux keep killing you on the ice.

I'd like "Play The Sioux Game" for $1000, Alex.

141-128-14.

Thank you, Alex. "Play The Sioux Game" for $800.

I hope you like housekeeping. There's gonna be a lot of it this weekend. ;)

In Colorado it is not even close. No fan base travels out to Denver and CC as well as North Dakota.
How do you know they are all traveling and aren't alumni that happen to live in the area? I know that there's a strong presence of UND alumni in the Denver area (just as there is in the twin cities area).

The prescence of alumni is strong, but I have a bad feeling that the Sioux are travellers, similar to Packers fans. If you want to get economical, it's a cheap "road" trip.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify North Dakotan hockey fans and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you Sioux fans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Sioux fans are a disease, a cancer of this planet. Sioux fans are a plague and MN fans are the cure.

Now we're talking... That's what I was looking for. Now save that for the Wisconsin series, just and some brandy referrences in it.

I have my own special references for the Sconnies. I hate UND at least 10x more than the Sconnies. Yeah, I said it.

I believe there are about 3,000 North Dakota alumni in Colorado. Unless they all go to the games, I'm pretty sure a significant amount travel for those series. I'm not sure how many alumni Minnesota or Wisconsin have in Colorado, but I would have to imagine that it is just as many as North Dakota if not significantly more. Ultimately, I judge a lot of my thoughts based on the sheer amount of North Dakota license plates that are on campus during those weekends. Of course, that does not prove anything other than a lot of people who have their vehicles registered in North Dakota are on campus. At the end of the day, I will make the inference that of the thousands of Sioux fans in attendance at those games, a significant amount traveled for the series.

In Denver/CO Springs, the states with the most people that moved to CO were WI/ND. Not. Kidding. The first time I went there, I was in total shock. I understand the AF base in the Springs, but the sheer number of non-born COs, and the states that they were from...amazing. This is from personal experience, not including any friends. Just meeting total strangers.

That's cool, but I care about all Gopher sports, not just a half MN - half Canadian hockey team. Hell, I'm still ****ed the both cross county teams got swept this weekend, and I'm still not really sure what cross country is or what they really do.

Are you saying the majority of transplants in Colorado are from Wisconsin and North Dakota?

Colorado is definitely about half/half with half natives and half transplants. That being said, the vast majority are from the East Coast, Texas and California. Perhaps you were just looking at the three states we have been discussing (ND/MN/WI) in which case I couldn't tell you. I know my wife always gets a kick out of when she wears her North Dakota stuff (my wife is from CO, went to Northwestern in St. Paul) and she gets comments from people who either went to school there, know someone who went to school there, or are from North Dakota.

I care about the hockey team. It's actually about the only college sport team (all sports, any college) I am a fan of. And before any of you mention MTU, like we've all said before, that's like finding a stray dog to pet once in a while. Or a pity-f*. Take your pick. ;)

A friend and his wife used to live out in the Springs (just moved to IA about 2 months ago). Townhouse complex. Both immediate next door neighbors were from WI. 3 other "neighbors" were from WI or ND. Went to the bar, it was about 50% WI/ND, 50% other states. How do I know? I was sporting an MTU jersey that night, and apparently everyone in the bar was curious about it. (BTW, I drank for free that night, thanks to the hospitality of these people).

In Denver, it's a little bit less of that sort of ratio, but I've found that I run into someone from WI/UND more often than not.

Yes, it's very unscientific, just going by what I've found.

I think part of it is that if you are wearing a college hockey jersey, North Dakota people (at least those who follow hockey) are more likely to come talk to you and get to know you. People talk about "Minnesota Nice" but North Dakotans take it to another level...no matter where they are. One of my favorite stories that revolves around this topic was earlier this year when I went to a Rockies game in my Sioux sweatshirt. It doesn't really have the logo other than on the sleeve, and just says UND across the front. I was stopped four times on the way to our seats by people either from North Dakota or went to school at UND. By the time I got to my seat it was the Bottom of the 2nd inning (I got to the stadium probably a good 35-40 minutes before the game started) and my wife and I were treated to beer, hot dogs and nachos by three of the four people that stopped us and talked to us. If any of you were the ones responsible for that, thank you again, it was greatly appreciated.

That is a valid point. The neighbors had no clue, though, as I was not wearing any hockey gear. I think my first words when they said they were from WI, were "Goddammit, I can't escape any of you!" They laughed, though, they were cool.

Yeah, it's that kind of culture that I miss about the upper Midwest. Colorado, while naturally beautiful and majestic, and having great weather for the most part, lacks uniqueness, largely due to the half/half native/transplant nature. Plus, Colorado natives like to throw it in your face whenever you get the chance. It is pretty annoying.

Not that I really give 2 ****s about this "traveling fan" cock measuring contest...
But there are a lot of UND fans in North Dakota who aren't UND alum.
And there are A LOT of North Dakota folks in CO.
And there are EVEN MORE North Dakotans who have family in CO.
And (admittedly anecdotal), there are a lot of folks in North Dakota who make Denver a preferential travel destination.

I'm not sure your comparison based on superficial, anecdotal observation is a fair one.
Then again, I don't give 2 ****s about this comparison....and I do think the UND fan base probably has a higher "per capita" traveling rate.
