Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

But that is how schools "fire" teachers now. They just don't renew their contract.
Certainly not always true in big money sports where it's fairly commonplace for coaches to be fired well before their contracts run out, including mid-season and including situations when there is a year or two or three remaining on the coach's contract.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

if it weren't enough for you that the author made it sound like Miller was handed
a cardboard box and shown the door, there is this:

"the budget for men’s hockey is $533,322 (including coach salaries) and for the women that figure is $259,732"

if only that were true :o

the author is yet another person from afar that is short on facts but long on opinions
the interesting thing about this is that you have a hard time finding people from Duluth who care one way or another, yet alone support Miller

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Wow. 12-0. Is that necessary? I know it's D1 hockey but at some point don't you call off the dogs? In men's hockey, there would be a special need to keep your head up tomorrow if you're UMD.

If you watched the game, which you clearly did not, you would see that they were in no way trying to run up the score that much. they were on the Power Play for nearly half the game. What do you expect them to do? Mankato didn't help themselves by getting two five minute majors either. What's more disrespectful to an opponent? Playing a full 60 minutes or just passing the puck around for an entire period?

I just don't get it with most people here. Last weekend UMD gets a sweep and it's not "convincing" enough. Now, they put on a convincing performance and suddenly it's too much? You all can't be serious.

I see a lot of Boarding and Checking penalties on Minnesota State...I'm sorry but if your going to play that dirty, i'm gonna run up the score.

I didn't watch the game. I'm speaking to 1 game and couldn't care less about last week's games. Fair points about MNS penalties, but the penaltyfest didn't really get going until it was 7 or 8 to nothing. I only see 1 5 minute penalty in the boxscore.

The box only shows one major, but with nine minors added on, I can see where it gets tough to keep track. I hope nobody on either team gets hurt tomorrow.

I'm not sure why it's not in the box score but there was a five minute major and a game misconduct 11 seconds before the 8th goal. And also the boarding at the end of the third period.

I see it now. It is only listed as a 2 minute Boarding on Johansson when it was five.

I've seen plenty of 7-0 or 8-0 games where the losing team doesn't start boarding the other players and trying to hurt them....its Division 1 college hockey...if you don't want to get beat 12-0 put a better team on the ice

Better get yourself to AMSOIL when the host goes down by 3-4.

At 1:11 it was a 5 minute unsportsmanlike (grabbing facemask) and a 10 minute game misconduct. Wasn't really bad, but it may be one of those calls that are automatic. Not sure why the box score isn't accurate?? MSU had 2 5 minute majors.

I didn't realize that D1 sports meant that it was OK to disrespect your opponents. I'll have to check that in the NCAA division guidelines manual ...

BTW - This was the excuse the Patriots used when they were rolling over nearly everyone in their almost undefeated season a few years ago (**** Giants). Lots of noise about disrespecting their opponents that year from professional commentators of all sorts. Not sure why paid professional sports would have a higher threshold of opponent respect than college D1 athletics.

Minnesota beat St. Cloud by the same score of 12-0 this season... Where' was the outrage then?

Not only 12-0 in one game but in 4 games so far this year the aggregate score is 28-0 between MN and SCSU. Yet I thought the compete level in yesterdays game from SCSU was pretty decent.

Mankato has had a rough year, in more ways than one. So their reaction isn't all that surprising, as well as the score. FWIW, I tend to go with the idea that if you don't want to get beat 12-0 then do something constructive about it, rather than going all Lamer-whioux on the bit.

Thats the thing, isn't it. Particularly when losing UND managed to get the sticks up & the cheap shots going (everyone remember what happened after the winning goal, when they lost in triple OT?). UMD went from playing physically to playing cheap also. Maybe it was MSU being very frustrated at the losing, maybe it was meeting a team that is also rugged and gave it back to them but nobody should complain about the final score when you provided them with so many opportunities.

The pussification of America. You play to win..every play. Anything else is unacceptable at the varsity level, be it high school, college or the pros.

I think teams do try to do a few things to back off, like play their fourth lines more when the game is out of hand. It looks like UMD did, as its fourth liners are both plus. Normally, you can keep your stars off the ice on the PP, but what are you going to do when you're constantly on the PP, especially a five minute? You can't keep the fourth line out there all the time.

On an unrelated note, I see Villila is back in uniform for the 'Dogs.
