Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Their attendance actually increased from 12-13 (528 average) to 13-14 (694 average) back down to 626 this year. So, I'm not sure attendance says anything about the coach, or quality of the team. Harvard has arguably their best and most successful team in years on the ice now, yet can't get more fans? Heck, RIT has a higher fan average than Harvard!

It doesn't. And yes, it is hard to fathom why we aren't drawing more fans to games given the talent on this year's squad. We have a promotion coming up for the Cornell game called "White the Bright" in which the University hopes to break our single game attendance record of 1294 fans set in 2004 against Dartmouth. We should be averaging close to a 1000 a game but we are nowhere near that and it is extremely disappointing to those of us who care about the team.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Miller's salary is $215K, not $250K. I assumed that they won't be saving a ton on the assistants, hence, my guesstimates.

Sorry for the goof on her salary. Given the $10M budget shortfall, where else do they expect to cut expenses? Is this school wide or just within athletics? I'd be interested to see who else gets axed or asked to take a pay cut to help offset the shortfall.

From today's Boston Globe. The author went to Harvard, wrote for the Crimson and has been a reporter for the Globe for the past ten years I think. I couldn't link directly to the story but if you scroll down the page, you'll see the headline.

It's school wide and a lot of people have been cut already.

I've actually heard that the academics side of UMD made $36 million in profit last year and that only the athletics side is $6 million in the black. Can't say that's the truth for sure but the final university expense report for last year should be coming out in the near future.

This is incorrect. The university as a whole was facing a $6 million shortfall. To whatever extent that is no longer true it's because cuts have already been implemented. $1 million was made p with an increased allocation from the rest of the University of Minnesota system. In 2013, UMD faced a $12 million deficit and went through a round of faculty and staff layoffs to deal with it.

I would take RIT's attendance numbers with a grain of salt. We had a high number of people attend one game. This put us up there just below the WCHA powerhouses with how our season has reversed we are getting less and less people to attend now as result.

it's always hilarious to read articles like this, people from afare commenting with little knowledge of the situation

the team did its part this weekend
fans did their part on Saturday .... somewhat, 1600 fans is a nice crowd
1000 on Sunday :(

maybe you people out east who seem to know it all should post how much money your school is losing to put a women's hockey team on the ice
and if you think Miller should be kept, why not start a fund drive, pledge money to UMD in support
once again, lots of hot air, but where it really counts, you are nowhere to be seen

None of this is about attendance or if the program is making a profit for the school. That's not what collegiate athletics is about in most cases. There are more sports that lose money than there are sports that make money for their schools. This is about administration taking the opportunity to get rid of her, plain and simple. Perhaps there have been complaints over the years from players and parents and all that coupled with her very strong attitude and her speaking her mind publicly have run its course for her bosses. Too many people are still not comfortable with string-minded women who aren't afraid to speak their minds. It seems a line in the sand was crossed at some point and they decided they'd had enough. I can't say I respect how they handled the situation but they felt the time was now. I have a high degree of respect for her and wish her the best. She has cemented her place as a top level coach in the history of women's college hockey. Nobody can take that and her 5 national championships from her. I'll be very interested to see what her next step will be once this season is all said and done.

I am not convinced this is as much about a strong-minded woman expressing her opinion as it is about an @zzhole that finally ran out of rope. I would not put up with a guy acting the way Ms. Miller did (and in fact I have never seen a male coach behave as badly). She certainly has a record of success and she will probably land somewhere but her act probably wore thin on the administration like it did on players and on fans. I wish her well to & hope she can learn something from this experience, but her comments have not indicated that she will. Mostly I hope that UMD will return to challenging for national championships soon, without some of the tactics used in the past & without the bad behaviour from behind the bench.

Would you say Bobby Knight was also an a**hole or just very passionate about his team and sport? Plus, doesn't an a**hole usually run out of TP? Who uses rope?! ;)

Darn right Knight was an ahole! & he richly deserved to be fired. That he was not is indicative of a University more interested in wins than in than in the sport or in their 'student'-athletes. When I spoke of coaches I didn't consider sports other than hockey, sorry, I forgot about the supreme jerks like Knight and Hayes. I have never seen any other hockey coach hold officials on ices for 10-15 minutes between periods to harangue them - REPEATEDLY. That was bad enough & the WCHA should have stepped in but she did it to a player at least once (I do not see every UMD game so maybe more). Hayes got fired, Knight eventually and Miller too.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

And another one from a month ago neither of which, I don't think, were posted here previously...

http://www.nicolemlavoi.com/2014/12...ed-a-troubling-development-for-women-coaches/

author starts out her commentary with incorrect facts (Miller was fired), that's a good way to establish your credibility with the reader ;)

I have a suggestion for any lawyer contemplating taking up Miller's case:

rather than waste your time on someone who doesn't deserve it, why not spend your time on something that will help women's college hockey rather than potentially prevent it from further growth or putting current programs in jeopardy?

how about taking the NCAA to court for unequal funding between men & women of the NCAA post season hockey tournament?

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

I would say that "not renewing your contract" is synonymous with "you are being fired."

Interesting that the author of the article added this to her article:

"Note: I amended this post 5pm 12/17/14 to reflect an inaccuracy that I wrote in an earlier version of this post. Miller’s contract is not being renewed and she will continue coaching through the 2014-15 season. What I wrote earlier made it seem that she was terminated immediately."

And that is what, I believe, the previous poster was getting at.

Yeah I suppose someone who hadn't been following the situation would read that as she was fired back on Dec. 12th or whenever it was. I get that. But that is how schools "fire" teachers now. They just don't renew their contract.
