Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Judging from my experience and observation, I'd say UMD is doing pretty good job if only a few women out of a hundred are complaining.

Part of the reason the guys may have been given more snacks is because to guys, especially college aged ones, good food is anything they didn't have to make or pay for. They'll eat anything available when they are hungry.

Try to get a group of two dozen women to agree on food, and be happy about it. No way.

In fact that could be UMD's defense, just present a list of what the guys ate, any women on the jury will surely be disgusted and label these women as complainers.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

apparently it does for the women though :P

If that story is true it would amount to just a few cents per serving and that would be a crime. As little as I respect Miller and the way she played her teams the players deserve to be treated better than that.

If the snack money really is 5:1 between the two teams that's not good. But who knows where the money came from? Maybe that all-access men's team donor mentioned in the complaint provided the extra $8K.

The document complains about men's hockey getting far more media appearances. Problem there is that local stations choose what programming to run. They also complain about men's hockey coaches getting better vehicle stipends, but I'm almost certain those coaches brokered their own agreement with a dealership to trade car benefits for endorsements and whatnot.

And did anyone read about the track pants? Picture a $500/hour lawyer typing up that paragraph. Absolutely hilarious!

Is this situation going to help grow or hinder the growth of the women's game in the NCAA? I'm not sure what to think.....on one side this may lead to UMD & other schools making substantial adjustments in budgetary funding for existing teams....however other schools might say "forget about it" when thinking about adding women's hockey....is it worth the $$$ when other sports are less expensive...

I'm sure that the schools lawyers will point out if the money came from outside. I have no opinion on the merits of the complaint in large part because I don't care enough to read them. But even if I had this is still only one side & like the reply will attempt to put the best case forward for that side. I get that men's side gets lots of perks from sources outside the schools, thats not the schools responsibility any more than crappy basketball coaches make a ton more outside money than hockey coaches.

As for $500/hr, oh no, he is working on a percentage of any settlement. (and I lied a little bit about not having an opinion, I do it just is not an informed one. From what I have bothered to read they are just tossing stinky at the wall& hoping something sticks. That opinion is subject to reversal if the school does not have a good response)

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Might be better to just avoid hiring Canadians and lesbians altogether!

when you look at the recent hires in hockey, it appears that schools are over their love affair with Canadians

UMD sort of deserves this, why on earth would you hire a Canadian to coach basketball or softball
there were none to be found in the US?

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

Papers filed recently in advance of a Monday court hearing:

Before reading this article I didn't realize that if you hire a Canadian you have to give them a job for life or you could very well be sued for $13 million. Might be better to just avoid hiring Canadians altogether!

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

What really gets me is "The lawsuit seeks back pay, front pay, damages for emotional distress,".

Wow. If the emotional distress was so ripe, wouldn't Miller have been the one to refuse a contract extension? Sure doesn't sound like she was too distressed until she learned that her contract would not be extended... Unless her distresses stemmed from being told repeatedly by the University that her sportsmanship on the ice must be improved, athlete success in the classroom must be improved, and that she needs to stop bringing in recruits that are ineligible by NCAA rules...

Anyone who has followed UMD hockey or one of their competitors teams knows very well of every issue she had with behavior, recruiting and ensuring her player's academic performance... I know there are a lot of opposing fans who thought she was amongst the most classless coaches.

Just beyond words right now. This will be interesting to see how it plays out. Seems like the cards are awfully stacked in the schools favor... Everything they did sounds like it fell in place with standard protocols, so these coaches and their attorney will really need to pull some stuff out of a hat to be rewarded any money...

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

in other news they gave a degree to a drug addict that never spent one day in a University classroom

so maybe that makes up for whatever sins they committed towards these lesbians

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

I thought this thread was dead.

What's the end game for the plaintiffs? Do they want their jobs back (unlikely) or a monetary settlement?

Came across this article that I thought some might find interesting.

Love her or hate her, she has made significant contributions to the game of women's hockey and deserves thanks from fans like those of us who attend this forum...even though humility isn't one of her virtues...

If she had walked away from UMD quietly, she would likely be coaching D1 somewhere. The noise generated with her exit has made it almost impossible for her to coach again anywhere.

Re: Shannon Miller out at UMD?

It is almost always about the Money.
But not always, every time.

As Bon Jovi put it: You live for the fight when it's all that you've got. With no coaching position, fighting for her causes is what she's got.

Well, yes. The rules of the legal system very rarely let you sue for anything else.
Close. People can and do file specific performance claims with some frequency. It's success that's the rarity.

My belief is that the views expressed by Shannon in this article are genuine. You may disagree with her methods. If so, you'd have a lot of company. You may disagree with some or all of her politics. Again, you'd have a lot of company.

Still, Shannon truly believes she's a pioneer and warrior for her causes, be that cause her sport, gender, affectional preference or even nationality. The money is the means to carry on the fight, because specific performance is so unlikely to succeed.

Like Arthur before her, she's not a fool. She'll take the money if it comes her way. But it's not her primary motivation, IMHO.
