Surely I can't be the first one to break this news? Twitter is reporting tonight that Miller's contract (and those of her assistants) will not be renewed. @ZachSchneider, sports director at Duluth's NBC/ABC affiliate is tweeting this tonight. Wow....
If they're squeezed for cash maybe the scholarship pot takes a hit, too?
Surprised they didn't opt to drop a sport or two, which is what usually happens when an institution is cash strapped. Cutting out the coach who turned the program into a revenue sport doesn't seem too bright, nor does waiting until the end of the season to find a replacement. Recruiting is going to take a big hit.
No I'm pretty sure they are able to re-open their recruiting due to the coaching change, and even get out of an NLI if they wanted. What happens to the players who have officially committed to UMD? Are they stuck now with whatever basement dweller staff replaces Miller's?

Of course, that's what happens because the recruits officially committed to the program with no conditions attached as to who the coach(es) would be even though the coach(es) might have been a major reason why the recruits committed.
For an even worse circumstance just look what happened at WSU a few years ago.

I think those players would be allowed to transfer without penalty as well. That's good news for those players. The underclassmen who went to UMD for the program under Miller can't be too happy right about now. Miller's recruiting reach is going to be missed there, too.
very often in cases like this schools will let recruits out of their NLI's without penalty if they ask.
That is correct. A student athlete signs an NLI with a program, not a coach. But as others say, coaches will usually release a player who doesn't want to be there, but there have been exceptions.I broached that topic a number of years ago and was told a commitment is just that, a commitment, which was the basis for my previous comment. Coaches come and go and no guarantee can be made with respect to who the coaching staff will be, regardless of the program, is more or less what I was told. That certainly made sense to me.
