You can have it - This time of year one loss doesn't kick you down the list.

It didn't bode so well with losing to Genny at the end of last year. I might be wrong, but #1 wasn't OSUs anymore after that one.
But besides simply wanting to buck the title, and in seriousness, the Cadets played exceptionally well this weekend, no? That should at least garner several 1st placers for Norwich.

Votes, probably, but I don't see leaping over 3 teams - it is very rare to see that much of a shakeup in the ratings in one week. That's regardless of my view of the team, but more my view of how the process works.

Eric Selleck scored his second professional goal today. This time he actual did put the puck in the net without the assistance of a defenseman guiding it there in the first place. Good job, Selleck.

The First Lady was there to witness it.

Beckwith has not looked real good since he game back with most of the Platty game being the exception. He was ok tonight until he gave up that second goal, from then on he was weak, but he stopped four breakaways, go figure.

Overall they were unable to match the effort of Morrisville, Beckwith couldn't match Relkoff and the fans acted like they were at church most of the time. This is the kind of complacency that is bread by being 46-6 over the last two seasons. The game meant nothing for Oswego and you could tell and they should be ok once the playoffs roll around.

Beckwith may not be playing as stellar as he was in the first half of the season (who knows how much that injury still may or may not be bothering him), but I think he deserves a bit more credit than he's getting.

He held a good Buffalo St team, that is lighting the lamp more this season than last, to only 1 goal in his first game back and had another near shutout performance against Potsdam in the trip up north where he stopped 30 of 31. And any time you hold your biggest rival and a team as good as Plattsburgh to 3 goals, you put your team in a position for a victory.

It seems to me that the games Paul has struggled the most in this semester have been games that he's had subpar defense playing in front of him mainly from a lack of effort. The Lakers didn't wake up until the 3rd period against Cortland and didn't really at all against the Mustangs. As for Fredonia, that game in Western New York has been one of the toughest games for the Lakers over the last couple of seasons - they actually have given up 4 goals the last three times they've played at Steele Hall.

I think when you consider how good the SUNYAC has been in the second half and the fact that this Laker team is built less on offense/blowing teams out and more on playing good defense/gutting more games out, you have to chalk up some of Paul's "not good" performances to the team playing in front of him as well.

I also can't even remember the last time I saw a game where one team got 4 breakaways. And the fact that he stopped them all shows you he is quite the goalie, IMO.

Nicely said. If you want to see how important a defense is in front of a goalie just watch some NHL All-Star games, the goalies get lit up because there is no real defense, so to speak.

And he managed to do it without getting into a fight? Well done!

That's kind of been his role with the Amerks this year.

Hey, whatever gets him paid. The Rochester folks have really taken a liking to his style of play.

nysportsfan29, all of that is true but he really has not looked very sharp at all most of the time since he came back. The team defense hasn't been too great but it wasn't that great early in the year and he saved their bacon in a lot of games early in the season. I am not disrespecting Pual at all, I have just noticed he is off his game for whatever reason. Earlier in the year and for much of the game against Plattsburgh and Buff State he looked really sharp and focused. When he gave up a goal he shook it off and moved on, lately he has been staying down a long time after giving up a goal and he seems to get rattled when he fails to control the rebounds. Again, this is not a criticism, it is just an observation.

I am a goalie myself so you don't need to tell he how important a defense can be to a goalie. What a good goalie like Paul does for a team is he bails them out when they have a break down and he limits the amount of soft, momentum killing goals that he gives up. In games where they weren't up to par he was their calming influence back there and the team has fed off him. Lately he hasn't been doing that which shows you how much he means to the team. So again I fail to see how he isn't getting the proper credit.

Nah he fought earlier in the game. :)

Some people within the confines of D-III don't seem to understand that he was signed to throw down and put up a couple of points, not be a 20-20 power forward. That being said, from reading some of the comments in the R D&C, he's not like some of the Amerk players as he's not a defensive liability like other forwards and he's actually playing technically sound hockey. Of course, he might be able to put up more points if he was playing on a line with skill players, but he's a bottom 6 forward on any professional team.

I get that. I was being sarcastic. :D

It is a bit of a change to see a player like that go from the friendly confines of D-III to the AHL where he's more of an enforcer than anything else. I've never been a huge fan of fighting in hockey and watching the NHL these days is like watching a sideshow. As long as he keeps scoring points and avoids turning into a full blown goon and I'm happy. :)

Yeah, I've actually been impressed in the fights I've watched on youtube where he doesn't square off for no reason. He throws big checks and teams don't like that. Selleck goes into beast mode after that.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

He plays hard, he just doesn't have a lot of talent around him. Rochester has almost zero talent at forward. For the role he plays he does a real good job but it would be nice to see what he could do if they took the reigns off.

Fair enough. Obviously if he's letting soft goals in something isn't right, whether he's still bothered by his injury or just a lack of focus. I guess I'd say that since the last two games haven't been his best, perhaps it is some psychological sort of thing where if the defense plays like absolute garbage in front of him he has on off night. I feel like while the defense hasn't played great in other games this year, they at least still displayed some effort which wasn't really the case against Cortland or Morrisville.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

You could be right but at Cortland he struggled in warmups, and badly so I don't think if there is a correlation between defensive effort and Beckwith it goes in that direction. All year he has been the calming influence that settled them down and gave them a chance to win. If your rock looks shaky then I don't think its a stretch to say that the rest might follow suit.

Obviously if he can work through it (and I haven't seen anything to indicate he can't) he can take them a long way. But as you say the defensive effort needs to be a lot better, they need a bit more movement on the PP, they need to not pass up so many open shots and the outlet passes need to be much better or whatever Paul does won't matter much.

lets hope he can get back to where he was b4 or the fans may start JONESING for another goalie and then things could get HAREIE......
