Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread
My turn to weigh in now, after watching Scrooge say "humbug" and before reading what else is going on in here - it's been a decent evening otherwise.
Well, everything that's seemed to play out at sub-par level for the Lakers this season finally reared its ugly head and delivered the L. Unable to break out of the defensive zone, sloppy passing, and an offense that couldn't get the quality chances - the Lakers looked completely listless. Perhaps the lack of their regular goaltender on the road for once (certainly not to take anything from DJ, as for besides the 4th goal, he did his job well, imho), or unable to figure out the cold Hobart rink, but bottom line is that the Statesmen had a strong, yet simple strategy of bottling up any attack (sort of like Utica) and capitalizing splendidly on OSU's inability to clear and move up ice.
It is not to take anything from Hobart for their solid performance tonight, but it will be very fitting for the Lakers to fall from first after today, because what I saw out there was panicked, undisciplined hockey, and nothing even close to Oswego's ability to outgun opponents last year in the event that defense could not solve the problem.
Two points I took from this game - one is on the personal level of admiration of Oz's fans turning out on the road in support, and their unmatched spirit when it comes to Campus Center play. When I'm on the road, and the home team beats the Lakers, it seems to be only when the final buzzer sounds that everyone stands and applauds. Absolutely no cheers or chants otherwise (I'll make one exception for Geneseo - that's it). Hobart is no exception - I don't care how cold the place is: you just knocked off the #1 team in the nation, and the best you could muster is a handful of lame cowbells on a goal. Show some spirit - turning out to just sit on your hands does not exemplify support. Make your voice HEARD!
The second point is that on paper, this is but a minor setback. 12-1 is not a record to sneeze at, nor the fact of losing to an NC opponent that's pretty decent, and that there's two weeks ahead for the Lakers to chew on this weekend's results. Hopefully, something will be learned from this debacle in that time frame. Losing #1 on a discussion-provoking poll is a small price to pay for getting your fanny kicked in a wake-up call game that shouldn't throw a wrench into the season in the long term...if an efficient recovery effort is made anyways.
Sorry for the long post - I had to mull over this one and try a post before reading the rest of them pertaining to tonight. Perfect seasons are a rarity, and I don't expect them at all, but this was a pure failure tonight. Now it's time to learn and move on.
