Hindsight is 20/20...who thinks Jones should start against Brockport...raise your hands!

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Question maybe Prez can answer...

In NCAA Basketball, When giving at-large bids, the committee sometimes takes into account a team that is missing a star player during part of the season, especially if that team struggled during that stretch. While I am trying not to think too far down the road, this thought just came into mind. Assume Oswego struggles during a stretch without Beckwith, but Beckwith comes back before the end of the season, Oswego does not win the SUNYAC, but is in contention for a Pool C bid (maybe a 'bubble' team), does the selection committee take into account that a team was without one of their best/important players during a short period of time when making their decision?

As far as I know, they are NOT supposed to.

The committee is SUPPOSED to look strictly at numbers and cost feasibility etc.

It's all good fellas - we have a perfectly fine option to Mr Jones....her name is Emi Williams, a senior from Alaska who compares favorably to PB in save% - .946 to PB .949 - and GAA - 1.68 to PB 1.37...and she's played 10 games to Dj's...uh, none.

Could be the making of a Disney movie.....

Julie "The Cat" Gaffney has the quick glove and is the team's second goalkeeper. Although she is the better of the two team goalies, Julie does not become the starter until D3. Her reputation as "The Cat" is cemented when she stops Iceland's Gunner Stahl's shot to give the Ducks the championship in the Junior Goodwill Games. She is one of the reasons the Ducks won their final games with her miracle saves.

Nope, still don't think he should have started. I still think starting him is a shot in the dark, it could turn out good or it could turn out bad and I guess we will find out. If he has what it takes we will find out one way or another.

Furthermore this is the type of thing a team of this calibre should not be worrying about. Since the team moved to the Campus Center there are no less than six goalies that have commited to Oswego only to leave before ever playing a game and in some cases before coming to school. I think Eddie needs to figure out why that is happening and try and prevent it from occuring again. This is the second time in three years he has had only two goalies with one of them being a borderline prospect and now he will again be turning to him, it was a failure the first time, hopefully this time is different.

Where else would a goalie like his first collegiate start but at home at the Campus Center in front of that crowd!

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Jones was 21-5 in juniors...but a GAA of 3.3 - sounds like defense wasn't a big priority there???

Markham is the kind of team that usually wins 6-5 and 8-7 so you are right, defense is not a big priority there.

Maybe his defensive pairings were not that effective. Let's see how he does this weekend and let's see how the team handles this before we start the "woe is us" mantra. If there ever was a time for this to happen, this part of the schedule is it. I know Beckwith will be chomping at the bit to get back in there once this problem is resolved and I'm hoping he gets healthy quicker then the 6 weeks.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

It's not a woe is us mantra, the facts are Markham is not a defensive team. They take a lot of chances, just like Oswego has been doing and with that team in front of him Jones had a respectable if unspectacular GAA. He needs to make the big saves on the defensive breakdowns to give the team a chance to win, if he can do that he will be fine.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Maybe I am naive or the eternal optimist, but if you are among the elite teams in D3, you should be expected to rally around your teammate in net and support his efforts to continue your collective success... Forget whether he should have seen action sooner than this or whether a third goaltender should be on the roster - this is his time, now - his team, at least for tomorrow, probably the weekend....so suck it up boys, and make him look great!

With any luck, the news of Mr. Beckwith's demise are premature and we can more along and keep this train rolling....

just to add as well they have a Olympic goalie coach in Pete Sears, not sure how much work he does with them but hey its has to have some weight in the recruiting aspect........a good thing is that DJ has been with the lakers for 2 yrs as has been facing great shots in practice, I know its not the same as a game but Oz has some good snipers the past few yrs to test him for sure......

I hope this isn't true, I asked my gf to confirm, she's neighbors with a sports writer from the oswegonian. I'll post when I hear back.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

Nice to see you've conceded the fact that Plattsburgh can't beat Oswego anymore :)

but to hope for an injury?...come on Nate...you're better than that. You want to beat your arch-rival at full strength, fair and square.

I believe that's what I had said 3 posts earlier...

For the sake of the competition, I hope Beckwith gets better. I want to see Plattsburgh beat the Lakers this year, but I want them to beat the Lakers at their best. I hope he recovers quickly.

That said, I think it's safe to say now that Beckwith is cursed. ;)

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

I think Jonesy is going to surprise some folks tomorrow night. He is not Paul but he is going to do just fine. As for the team stepping up to help him out, I think it is going to be the other way around where Dan steps up to help the team out when they have a miscue like Paul has so far this year. The Lakers will need to play a good game regardless of who is in net. Go Lakers!! Jonesy, you are the man now show us what you've got.

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread

What ever happens - happens, not much can be done about it now. Rest of the team needs to step it up - should be interesting to see how they handle this. Next conference game isn't until Jan 21. Plenty of time for Beckwith to get healthy and they can concentrate on winning there to get in the post season.

What's the over-under on Utica goals tonight?

I'll be optimistic and say 2...both on the Power Play...

Re: Setting Sail - Oswego State Lakers 2010-2011 Season Thread
