SCSU vs. Bye Jan. 11 & 12

Re: SCSU vs. Bye Jan. 11 & 12

SCSUEuro...you're right I made a mistake by saying that Faragher played on Friday against NMU. I didn't go to the game on Friday and didn't go on Saturday either because of the Vikings game.

How do you know how much hockey I've watched? I guess we'll just have to speculate on each other's viewing habits. Between all the posters on this website SCSUTommy has offered the least amount of logical argument for his original statement, so I guess I just assume he hasn't seen a lot of hockey.

I don't know how much hockey you've watched this season, or any season. Just like you don't know how much Tommy has watched. Trying to say "I've watched more of this team" is not only next to impossible to prove but pointless. Unless you wanna sound like a bitter Gopher fan (that you've already been accused of being) or a bitter UAA fan I know.

End if the 1st period 3-1 Bye Week is leading.

Well, at least we're not losing to CC at home. THAT would be embarassing.

Re: SCSU vs. Bye Jan. 11 & 12

Well if you guys can come back in the 3rd against the bye and win tomorrow it will be less embarrassing than getting swept by NMU at home.

Yep, and you still have nothing better to do than troll in here. Maybe you should worry about your squad this weekend.

Because a player's height only matters when pumpkin pushing? Would Chara be as respected as he is if he had the same level of talent he has now, but was a 6" - 10" shorter?

Yes, Kossila, Jensen, Roe, Lasch, and Rau are all good players. Especially the last three. I loved watching them play, very exciting stuff. Now make them all 6'2" or taller, hold their skill levels steady, and you'd have players with a lot of NHL talk. As it was, those three were talked about as being really good, but likely staying for three or four years because of their size. A taller person has the potential for a harder shot. When you have two people of the same strength, same skill level, one person is taller, holds a longer stick, that person has a greater potential for stick speed at the end of the point of contact with the ice, and that generates greater potential for puck speed. (Think golf clubs.) And as taller players they can impact the play farther away from their bodies. Why would you even dispute that greater height is an advantage? The bigger you are, the less raw talent you need to be effective.

I don't think I said size doesn't matter. I said the way the college game is set up with the new rules (contact to the head, no fighting) the advantages are not as great.

You mentioned reach and harder shot. I mentioned because the puck is on the ground it is easier for shorter guys to get to those greasy rebounds. I also mentioned with stick lengths not really regulated a lot of the shorter players are using lacrosse sticks to negate the reach advantage. I also mentioned that the durability or punishing hits over the season are less because they play a lot less games over the course of a season vs the NHL.

Yes you are right a Boogard (basically no talent or skill) is wanted in the NHL (enforcer/ fighting) but because that has basically been eliminated in the college game the need for those types of guys is basically nill. And yes they want them bigger with skill but just basic physics it takes most of the bigger guys a lot longer to develop (coordination and skating skills) and that's why you don't see many of them.

I'll debate the value of a hard shot too, Gravel can shoot really hard but rarely does it make it on net. Now the big rebound gives the other team a break going the other way.

Neidermayer made a living taking some off of his shot by getting it through the first line of defense (not get blocked, hard shots are more likely to be blocked because of the big windup), the slower shots are easier for the forwards to redirect and tip, and a lot of times the goalie gives up a juicy rebound because they are expecting a hard shot right on them and they over react or react too quickly (low shot they go down and it is easier for the forward to tip over their shoulders).

A hard shot is only valuable if it is both hard and accurate - hits the corners, or on net - obviously Chara can do that and that it why he is respected. His is so hard no one wants to block it.

The only reason we are discussing this is because Benik 5'10" gave Johnson 5'8" a by the textbook body check, shoulder to shoulder, didn't leave his feet, the skater went into him but because he had his head down (putting himself in a vulnerable position, neck injuries) they call a 5 min major for contact to the head. By that definition you are basically eliminating checking (except hip which they are now calling tripping) from the college game. On the other hand the smaller guys can leave their feet, have no fear of hitting the other guys head 5'8- 5"10" vs 6'4" and above, as long as they bounce off nothing will be called.

In other words they need to revisit the rules again. 5 min major game changers need to be up for review or they need to reduce the penalty time so their is something in between a 2 and 5 min or if they score it is over.

This is disappointing.
I thought cross cheque was exclusively trolling the Gophers and here he is having an affair with Jan.
