SCSU 2010-2011 Season Thread- Frozen Four or Bust

Re: SCSU 2010-2011 Season Thread- Frozen Four or Bust

Why not move homecoming to mid-October and use a hockey weekend as the basis for homecoming instead of foosball? Terrible to see traditions die.

Funny you say that because the school has done that and the hockey games are packed, but nobody still goes to football. I think what the school is saying is the Hockey games will be packed no matter what, so why do it? I can see both sides on this one.

Re: SCSU 2010-2011 Season Thread- Frozen Four or Bust

Nobody cares about DII football, period! Nobody!! When the DIII fb team across town consistantly outdraws the DII team year after year, maybe someone in the admin some years ago (like about 50) should have said, "ya know, maybe we need to push this fb thing a little harder." I've been ripped before and I'm gonna get ripped again, but if Gino has some forsight, he'll say let's go DI get into comp. with the Dak. schools and put that thing on the map.

I have been saying for years they should do what DU did and just dump football and go D1 in everything else....Since they didn't do that this year when they had the chance I doubt they ever will.

Re: SCSU 2010-2011 Season Thread- Frozen Four or Bust

It really is not much of a tradition at all. There is a modest boost to attendance for homecoming at best. They need to do much better at marketing all of the games and events. Copious amounts of improvements needed.

They do marketing now?

Re: SCSU 2010-2011 Season Thread- Frozen Four or Bust

Oh why not pick a weekend with both football and hockey at home. Afternoon game for football on Saturday, and you have the evening hockey game as well for the administration to tell the alumni that they need more money.

We tried that and had some success. Unfortunately, MnSCU releases football schedules too late to allow for much long term planning, and last season we had Mankato make a late change to its men's hockey home-and-home series with the goofers to require all those games be played in Kato which, consequently, led the goofers to do the same with our home and home series during Homecoming which left us with no hockey game on campus during Homecoming week.

There are so many things going on at SCSU in relation to this issue and others due to financial restraints, etc. But the process in reaching this decision as well as the timing in announcement of this decision could have been handled better.

First of all, bottom of page 3?!? Secondly...

RUMOR ALERT: The following that you are about to read is a rumor. No basis behind it whatsoever. Probably as fictional as a Seawolf.

In St. Cloud tonight, speaking with a current student, and he said that the rumor was that the aviation program was cut in order to fund the football team. I'm assuming that's a rumor. That's gotta be a rumor. I'm PRAYING that's a rumor. Please, for the love of God, someone tell me that they know for a fact that that's the case.

Something like that was reported in the SC Times a while ago. Cuttin the aviation, but not to save the football program. They considered cutting it just because they are dumbphocks.

It is merely a rumor. Football and a number of other athletic programs were "saved"
so to speak by the students passing a referendum to increase their student fees on a per credit basis. No funds were diverted from Aviation to football.

From what I understand the Aviation program was one of, if not the most, expensive programs on campus. It's all about sustainability in a fiscal environment that is unstable and unpredictable. A number of factors were taken into consideration such as alumni donations to the program, upgrades needed to stay competitive with other schools, etc. The Aero Club's fleet of planes were badly needing upgrades and needed financial help to update their fleet.

Well I'm sorry it had to go, but if it had nothing to do with saving the football team, then I feel better. I wanted the football team saved, but not at the expense of a department that was as highly rated as our Aviation. Kids came from all over the country to get into that department. It sucks that they couldn't keep it going, but such is life.

The loss of the Aviation program is an unfortuante sign of the times. It was a victim of the Reorganization of SCSU to meet its statutory obligations under a diminishing budget due to decreasing government funding on higher education. As of last summer the Aviation program was a goner along with other programs that do not fit into the revised colleges and departments to support the new curriculum agenda.

Your rumor is just that. As previously posted, the referendum vote to increase student activity fees which raised revenues for Athletic budgets including football had no connection to the decision to cut the Aviation program.

More interesting, IMHO, is the decision to "cancel" homecoming as announced last week. My understanding is that this decision to have "homecoming everyday" is an attempt to better engage alumni and, therefore, the percentage of alumni donors as well as the amounts of their donations. Again, its all about money. I don't know why you can't have both; homecoming, and everyday marketing to engage affinity based groups of alumni. I noticed the current SCSU football coach wisely chose to not comment to the decision to cancel homecoming. It appears that the local football boosters are getting schooled on how best to support their favorite athletic team.

Bump. The season is now officially 'bust.' At least they made it kind of interesting at the end.

R.I.P Husky season 2010-11! Very disappointing especially when there was so much pre-season hype. Hope next year is better. :(

Next year has to be better. There's nowhere to go but up. We need some guys that will check, shoot, and score 3 or more goals per game. This season was horrible it's a good thing they lost last night, so we don't have to endure more misery. Underachieve much?

Team Zombie! That's what they should have been called this year.

Who's gonna skate around carelessly in our own zone and let soft passes get picked off that lead to scoring chances now that he's gone? Oh, wait, Taylor Johnson is still here.

Does this mean we can get rid of of Markus now?

Wow, that is somewhat of a surprise. IMHO, Oliver could use another year of college hockey.

Now our team's greatest weakness and concern for the 2011-12 season takes a potential hit. I agree with some posters that Oliver had some off nights, like last Friday in Duluth for example. It appears he also got caught up ice on the game winner in the 3 OTs on Saturday. But overall, he was a better defenseman than Johnson, Zabs, Burrell, Rioux, and possibly Gravel and Barta. Oliver's early exit just highlights the dearth of talent in the D corp for this team looking at next year.

Re: SCSU 2010-2011 Season Thread- Frozen Four or Bust

Well this season was a bust. I hope next year is much better because I can't sit through another season like this. Outside of the Wisconsin series going to the NHC this season was painful to watch and not any fun. In the end I can live with one bad year, but if next year is just as bad I won't be as nice.

The defense lost it's second and third best players on a already bad defense. I wonder what Motzko is going to do to try and fix the problem? I am sure Jensen will be better and Gravel did make huge strides, but the other guys coming back did not impress me at all this year. From what I can tell we don't ahve any big defensive recruits coming in to help either....:(

Yeah. The season went from frustrating, to hopeful, to exhilirating, to flat disappointment. Quite the roller coaster.

Favorite highlights were news of winning the Florida Classic over the holidays and then watching Senior Night game against Wisconsin. Roe and Marvin will be missed.

Not sure if I'm going to a F5 game, although I do plan to take my son to see the Wild on Saturday afternoon at the X.

Is anyone planning on starting an Off Season thread? Speaking of . . . WHEN do Dr. Potter, Gino G. & Company dig the first shovel full of dirt on the NHC renovation?
