Can i ask what her rationale was? Because even 10 years ago I'd have probably agreed, but I don't see how that still holds given everything we know about the modern day GOP shenanigans.
 
For a lot of people adding 4 justices is quite a big move. Even gives me the willies a bit. If I wasnt worried about Biden in 4 years I would say do 2 now and 2 second term but in truth we might not get that chance so it is time to drop the Big One!

I told her we are defending ourselves against Nazis. We aren't breaking any laws, we are strictly operating within the Constitution. And, for that matter, the difference between 0 and +2 is less than the difference between +2 and +16.

She said if we try for more than 2 they will scream tyranny and we will lose legitimacy. I said they scream tyranny every time we don't give them 110% of what they wish for, so it doesn't matter. And, indeed, they have screamed "tyranny" so often that they have completely lost the right to any input in an adult conversation.

Nazis use institutions and norms in order to destroy democracy. We have had a ratchet effect for 40 years where we play fair and then they rabbit punch and knife at the bottom of the huddle. All of those Feel Good movies where the honest side wins because The People see that they are genuine and moral are bunk: The People see nothing but the feeder bar in front of their nose.

To save democracy we have to recognize what we are fighting against. We won't lie and cheat like they do, but we must use every legal remedy to fight them. They have guns and we are debating whether we can use strong language.

Just remember, if trump gets this pick, it means half the members of the court are picked by presidents who lost the popular vote.

also worth noting that in the last 53 years, we’ve had 4 SCOTUS picks. Republicans have had 14.
