Re: SCOTUS 14: Confirming a Rabid Partisan to Own the Libs

The Court is about money. Demonizing trans people does not directly help that the way making bribery protected speech does.

Fascists create out groups to churn up their followers into a rage of fear and violence. In order to maintain that tension they also need the courts to insist on those out groups' right to exist. That in turn churns up the orcs even more and gets them howling for even more blood.

This may be exactly what saves Roe. The GOP is one tool used by the Plutes. It's a vote-making machine that preys on stupidity and ignorance to get people to vote to slash their own throats. But the Court is a different tool. It's a law-filtering machine that keeps democratic forces from reining in the Plutes. It can best serve its purpose by continually failing to take the Final Solution step that the conservative groundlings masturbate themselves to sleep over.

You're a great boogeyman. You're no use to them dead. Your place is to be tortured and to be in sight of the tree, but for the mob to have the rope held forever just beyond its grasp.

That is how right wing politics have always worked.

If anything, there's money on the other side of the issue. Real money. Most large publicly-held corporations are actively encouraging more progressive policies. They have to because the workforce is demanding it. They have to because the workforce isn't based in Alabama. To attract young talent, they need to align closer to their politics. At least on social issues.

Right now we're getting through the 19th century norms by making women's pay and women's leadership positions equal. The goal at many (most?) Fortune 50 corporations is to have 20-40% of women filling the board chairs. We aren't there but we're slowly dragging the anchor of the GOP along with us kicking and screaming.

Large public corporations like Target and 3M are also actively pushing progressive LGBT policies in their workforce and in terms of public policy. Corporations like the NCAA pull events from places with bigoted bathroom laws. More corporate money is moving to the side of the LGBT community. Eventually it will drive those policies publicly. It just might take another decade.

Globalization may help, too. In the same way that the citizens of civilized states boycott dinosaur states, the citizens of civilized countries are going to start demanding their governments cold shoulder a socially reactionary, fascist US.

It would be delightfully ironic if the Republican logic that drove their foreign policy -- that aggressive projection of a civilized influence into an authoritarian domain would eventually leverage market forces to force that domain to adhere to civilized values -- eventually doubled back and pulled the US away from the influence of its hindmost reactionary internal pressure groups, now institutionalized (if only) in the Republican party!

Right now we're the whole class being held back by the dumbest kid. Eventually we're going to have to move him to the "special" class so we can move on with the rest of the school.

Which is why all the Minnesota Business council always gave Dayton standing ovations when he was keynote speaker at their conference every year. They may not like the taxes much, but they support the Progressive Policies because they have an awesome workforce who tend to be Progressive.

And even the general fiscal policy is probably somewhat favored as well. It keeps infrastructure in relatively good shape, offers good government services to the workforce, maintains a high educational standard, and other amenities like parks and rec.

There’s a reason the highest taxes large metro areas have the highest Fortune 500 companies per capita.

It’s not universal, but they support it generally. Or rather they support the populace paying higher taxes than the businesses themselves. So it’s better than nothing.
