Re: Science: Vaccines Work, GMOs Are Safe, Everything is a Chemical

This may be a really, really stupid question so please bear with me.

Couldn't a truck, by its very nature, carry a sh-t ton of extra batteries and extend its range practically infinitely?

at the expense of cargo capacity

Re: Science: Vaccines Work, GMOs Are Safe, Everything is a Chemical

didn't the cummins truck have a 100 mile range? Tesla claims 500 and ability to charge to a 400 mile range in 30 minutes.

Possibly. But I'll trust Cummins to deliver on its promise over Tesla every day of the week.

You can carry X amount of cargo, being it batteries or revenue paying cargo. It's a mini max linear programming model. 500 miles needs X pounds of batteries which leaves Y pounds for cargo.

1,000 miles may need 3X battery which would yield Y/2 cargo. Max the revenue.

I understand that it's an efficiency question. But it just seems to fall under the "airplane has to carry fuel" calculation. And unlike fuel, the batteries are going to Moore's Law their way to greater efficiency.

What if your airplane carried so much fuel it couldn't carry any passengers?

Once battery technology improves they can offer longer ranges without sacrificing too much cargo capacity. For now they think they can be cost-competitive for routes that can deal with a 500 mile range (shorter routes where you can charge when you offload at your destination) and local delivery (start and end your daily route at the local warehouse where you can plug in). If they try to target longer routes they'll have to increase costs of each truck dramatically (for the added battery capacity) and lower hauling capacity, which also increases costs to the trucking company because they'll need more trucks and drivers (until they can get rid of human drivers) to move the same amount of cargo as they could with diesel semi-trucks. If quick chargers were installed at most interstate truck stops, then a cross country route becomes possible even with a 500 mile range.

Think about a WalMart distribution center. Take for example, the one in Lewision Maine. I think there is only one WalMart in Maine that isn't within a 500 mile round trip from the this distribution center. Those are perfect routes for the Tesla. They don't have to take over the entire trucking industry at once.

Perhaps it's not possible to deliver the needed power over existing trailer electrical hookups. If not, now you need specialized/retrofitted trailers.

Of course, but again, the tech curve may come to the rescue.

I wonder how many times a day a truck carrying x from a to b passes a truck carrying x from b to a? How much utterly redundant transport is there? Presumably companies optimize and don't do that, but there's no coordination between companies (just the opposite) so I suspect it happens a lot.

Then we take less passengers and/or bags.

If these are used on longer routes, I'm sure someone will figure out when it's economical to take extra batteries vs. just recharging every 400 miles or so...

National truck lines could have chains of battery stops for long hauls. Not charging stations but facilities where truckers switch out spent batteries for full ones. Pony Express with batteries instead of horses.

Tesla has demo'd that changing a battery pack takes less time than filling up.

Re: Science: Vaccines Work, GMOs Are Safe, Everything is a Chemical

It’s not about filling up time. Especially since there are limits on how many a trucker can drive. And thrn, when you’re driving cross country, you probably need more than a fill up when you stop.

With charge times of 30 min, the driver can charge while they have their truck stop dinner. I don’t think charge times will be the problem.

Re: Science: Vaccines Work, GMOs Are Safe, Everything is a Chemical

Exactly. It’s abour battery life (number of recharges), reliability, range, and ultimately cost per mile.

I assumed charging would take all night. Aren't truck batteries significantly larger and higher capacity than car batteries?

How long can a truck driver drive without taking a break? On a full 500 mile charge, that’s 8 hours and 20 minutes if you can average 60mph on the route. Would it be that big of a deal to charge for 30 minutes after going 8 hours straight?

Re: Science: Vaccines Work, GMOs Are Safe, Everything is a Chemical

If you can figure out heat sinks and run a big enough cable to it, you can charge as fast as you want.

With a fridge for food, mason jars for pee, and industrial amphetamines? How wide is your continent?

But we'll have self-driving cross-country trucks within 10 years.

“This window is usually thought of as a “daily” limit even though it is not based on a 24-hour period. You are allowed a period of 14 consecutive hours in which to drive up to 11 hours after being off duty for 10 or more consecutive hours. The 14-consecutive-hour driving window begins when you start any kind of work.“

Tesla is rolling out “mega chargers” for the semi trucks that can charge to 400 mile capacity in 30 minutes. It takes a lot longer to fully charge a battery than it does to mostly charge it.

That's because there is a big difference between being dead and mostly dead.
