"This planet is at 5% of the Earth's distance from the Sun. However, Proxima is 1,000 times fainter than the Sun. So the flux - the energy - reaching Proxima b is about 70% of what the Earth receives. It's like taking Earth a bit further away, but it's comparable," explained Dr Anglada-Escudé.

Whether the temperatures on Proxima b are favourable for life to exist is going to depend on the presence of an atmosphere. An envelope of greenhouse gases would warm surface conditions and provide sufficient pressure to keep water - essential for biology - in a liquid state. But even with the limited information we currently have, scientists are excited by the news.

"I think it's the most important exoplanet discovery there will ever be - how can you ever trump something that could be habitable orbiting around the very closest star to the Sun?" commented Dr Carole Haswell from the Open University.

It would be pretty impressive if our nearest star (after the sun) had an earth-like planet in the Goldilocks zone.

Tell the monkeys to stop building weapons* and put that tech into going there.

* In 6.5 years. Tell them then; not now. Please.

Except we need to get away from chemical rockets. Somebody needs to get lucky and discover a way to move objects to very fast speeds without using chemicals.

Someday somebody will do the math and figure out how you can exceed c without killing yourself.

As an example read "Kinsella" by Gina Marie Wylie. It's on Amazon for ~$2.99 for kindle.

A space elevator in South America will cut the costs enormously before that.

Spaceports on the moon, Mars, Ganymede (not Europa!), Titan, Titania, and Triton wouldn't hurt, either.

That gets you to earth orbit. To get to another planet or star system still relies on chemical reactio ln (or ion power). We need something better.

Yeah, maybe, maybe not. Those can also be the guys who just forget to feed their cat for 10 days, or can't figure out how to open the little door protecting their car's gas cap.

They can, but the other Brains Too Large To Fit Through the Door are taking him seriously.

Without the wild ideas, we never make the big leaps. I am on the short bus compared to those guys so I can't differentiate between nuts, frauds, and the real thing, but the CERN / MIT / Cal Tech guys can.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious Charisma is the ultimate but it'd be nice to have a high score somewhere. Unfortunately for me I'm barely average across the board.

Not necessarily just them. Salt Lake City is gradually becoming a magnet for wealthy granola-eating, iodine-supplementing types looking to escape Colorado taxes/cost of living, while still having that ski condo in Park City. As long as they don't care about living in a perpetual red state, it's a good place for them. Especially since they are Fundies too, just of a different nature. More gullible = easy convert pickings for the LDS Church ;).

Also, it's more scenic than Denver, IMO. I mean, except when it's an inversion day. Those suck.

The mountains that are to the south east of SLC are some of the most beautiful country anywhere. SLC itself though is a pit.

Today I showed my 8 year old grandson Youtube videos of the Apollo 11 launch and landing.

He asked me why it was important. I told him it was the most important event in human history. He'd rather watch the Disney channel.

We're doomed.
