Now this is what I call an ambitious project.

Imagine an immense forest spun out along one of the world's greatest deserts as a coast-to-coast barricade to the spread of the sands. This is the vision of the Great Green Wall of Africa, now a step closer after a recent AU conference.

The plan is to create a living barrier of trees and plants, 14 kilometres wide and running for 7 000 kilometres along the southern border of the Sahara's Sahel desert. It would pass through 11 countries, beginning at Senegal on the west coast and ending in Djibouti in the east.

I know the early Europeans mistook it for several different rivers, but it's possible it was once bigger. It runs through the Sahel which is expanding desert, so rainfall is probably decreasing. It would be reasonable to think that means to total capacity of the river is dropping.

More phun for the phobes.

For the first time ever, scientists have produced live mice without a fertilized egg cell. The potentially revolutionary technique could one day allow gay men to produce biological offspring, or—even more radically—allow both men and women to self-fertilize.

Check, please. This is why we have built-in lifespan. There is a point where even the most broad mind loses its elasticity, and then it's time to move on and let the kids, buds, whatever take over.

Great ... people with bad recessive genes self-perpetuating. OK, maybe not so bad for blue eyes; not so great for folks carrying a CFTR ΔF508.

I remember reading somewhere that the whole red hair, blonde hair, blue eyes all disappearing in 10k years is a load of crap. Not without a perfect storm of genetic combinations.
