  • The USCHO Fan Forum has migrated to a new plaform, xenForo. Most of the function of the forum should work in familiar ways. Please note that you can switch between light and dark modes by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right of the main menu bar. We are hoping that this new platform will prove to be faster and more reliable. Please feel free to explore its features.

Science: "Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life."

Isn’t all of cryptography built on factorization being extremely difficult?
Pretty much, at least for public-key systems. Once you hit a sufficiently large prime number, factoring the composite back to its primes becomes computationally infeasible. The RSA algorithm is the best-known use of this approach.

However, as algorithmic efficiency improves and access to computers with greater computing power grows, this will have to change (and already has in some cases).

And that is all the math I intend to think about today. :-)

jfc when did NPR become the NYT?

Oh and according to Charlie Kirk's surgeon, his body was so magical that it stopped the bullet from exiting and harming anyone else.

Trump's not going to like hearing that claim since it wasn't about him.

Before Galileo.

I was turned on to the Merton Calculators by this article which argues the Babylonians were at it 1500 years earlier.

This meanwhile is more than 5000 years old:

A translation.

Lots of this survives in our constellations and asterisms:

Have to spend more time when I’m with a better reading platform, but it reminds me why I am disgusted with shows like ancient aliens. People have been smart for a very very very long time. Like Einstein smart sometimes. People have been doing hard things with their minds for as long as we have been human. We have to stop pretending we are smarter now than historically just because you can’t fathom designing and building things without a computer.

We might be a little smarter on average because of improvements in protein intake. But it is still the same basic architecture. The ratio of what we know compared to 5000 years ago is something like 10 ^ 20. The ratio of how much smarter we are is something like 1.0001.

I think people mistake the amount of stuff known with how smart they are.
