School Troubles

Re: School Troubles

I have never met anyone from Rhode Island. So I can't make a judgement on their education system. I've met plenty of people from Wisconsin though. Very sad.

Re: School Troubles

RI in general is in a world of hurt. They have a ton of municipal issues that are about to come to a head. Including pensions, I know you're shocked by that:D

Re: School Troubles

I wonder if they have the same issue with tenured teachers as they do in New York State, where some of them practically stop teaching once they're "in". I know, not all teachers are like that, but I had a few of those where I went to school.

Re: School Troubles

Rhode Island? Isn't that where that article about 14 year old strippers came out of last year? Sounds like the education system is working just fine!

edit: did I forget the  ? :p

We are paying for the lies we tell ourselves... nothing more, nothing less.

Re: School Troubles

In speaking of Wisconsin, something I speculated on my Facebook: How many of the 2/3rds of Wisconsin 8th graders really are illiterate, and how many just did not interpret literature to a similar conclusion as their teacher? Obviously being from NY State, I wouldn't know for sure.

Now I am wondering how many other districts are going to be doing investigations into their school systems.

Re: School Troubles

Can't remember where, but earlier this yr there was a school district in New England that fired everyone and the president had an opinion about it. caused an uproar.

They don't get unemployment unless they are laid off, right? But if it works like it works in Mass each one can then appeal not getting unemployment for being unjustly fired. Figure that each one of those appeals has to go thru a process taking many man hours. How much does that cost?

Last school year Central Falls, Rhode Island had this happen... look, these things are going to repeat as locales run out of money... these guys get these insane benefits packages that I certainly don't see...

The lies we tell ourselves are starting to cost us and affect us... either we stop lying to ourselves about all the good things we (can't) provide or else we'll be deeper into debt. Our righteousness will not solve this.... our hearts will not solve this... our love will not solve this. We are tying to provide things that are beyond our resources... that's what debt is... borrowing to provide things beyond our means.

Re: School Troubles

Why do other countries manage to provide this would be my question. We do not value education as much as we value business. This is what will kill us in the end. We cannot compete until we make education a priority not a talking point.

I am sure there are some teachers making a ton but the avg joe teacher is not making those insane numbers. In many places teaching is like taking a vow of poverty until you are very senior. The best and brightest have a pretty hard time to pay off school loans on a starting teachers salary, even with bennies if they went to a private school.

Did it work?

We've followed that idea of more resources and money and it's gotten us zero result so far. Doubled education budget per student since 1990. smaller class size via more specialized "teachers". I think you need to look at Bill Gates foundation idea of implementing some type of merit based pay and reduce automatic raise (longevity). probably should do the same for other public workers: police, fire , but those will be harder to measure.

I know in theory more resources of higher pay equals better qualified teachers but in reality it's all bogus as shown by several studies on standardized tests and graduation level.

I bet if you did an objective study on bank executive or other highly paid jobs you wouldn't get any benefit or improvement on the outcome from just increasing their salary. Like our health care system... we're #1 spenders but our result isn't that great vs other countries that spend 50% less.

Looking at that bottom graph, I would guess that Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Korea are seeing some educational returns on investment versus countries like Chile, Turkey and Mexico. :)
