Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Elmira and Hobart were both over ranked to begin the year, and its because in my opinion people based their rankings on how the teams did last season.Just like with Neumann,People rank them #2 in the country yet they lost more than half their team last season(and have 14 freshman this year on their roster),because of seniors. And you rank Neumann #2 and look they lose and tie to an unranked team.Neumann is still a great team with Fantastic Coaching, but their simply not last years team and don't have the experience that they had last season. Is it the same deal with Hobart and Elmira?

We know with Hobart its their whole Goaltending situation, they just can't find another longo out their to lift them to victories like in the past, and maybe theirs more, thats just what i hear on the grapevine whats troubling them.

Elmira's problem,I don't know really what it is.....is it their new coaching? did they lose alot of seniors last season? Casey Tuttle seems like himself......Anyone think they know why Elmira's not getting off to a hot start like in the past?

And your right collegehcky2,I don't realize a lot of things with teams in the SUNYAC.The two real divisons that i know are the EcacWest and SUNYAC.....remember to guys,I'm still relativly new at College hockey and i don't know a lot about teams outside the teams that Utica plays.

You just made my argument for me.

[Begin Rant]

Why are you so surprised by Morrisville winning, or calling Utica's defeat of Neumann the biggest upset of the year?

-Morrisville isn't horrible, they have a goaltender that will steal games for them.

-Utica beating Neumann at home shouldn't be such an upset because, even though they won the national championship last year, they lost a lot of players and you should know well that the Aud is a tough place to play. The margin was a bit more than expected but it's not as if Utica isn't expected to compete against them. An upset more noteworthy is Morrisville over Elmira just because of the relative quality of Elmira year to year.

-I understand you are new to college hockey, but seriously, think before you write.

After seeing Geneseo's game against Hobart yesterday I'm not terribly surprised by the result of this game. It was such a brutal game against Hobart that they must have been running on fumes for this one. You factor in Morrisville's goalie and tied after 60 mins isn't a huge surprise to me. OT then often comes down to luck or a bounce and you are just kind of subject to the whim of the hockey gods. Geneseo was on the short end of the stick this go around in OT.

Josh makes a good point about Geneseo playing down (or up) to the level of their competition they aren't going to run away and hide from anyone they just don't have that firepower, but just winning a game over an inferior opponent by say a score of 4-0 doesn't seem to happen for them either.

As far as the goalies, there was no reason for Gershon not to be confident tonight. He played a great game yesterday and was the absolutely the difference in that win. Tonight he was not having a great game and let in some soft goals. Rubiniak has been playing very well (1 GA @ Neumann, 2 GA @ Potsdam) so why not put him in to try and win the game?

Congrats to Morrisville, their early season success is turning into a pretty cool story.

He must never drive home after a win.:)

Given the celebration that would be appropriate had Plattsburgh won, that might have been the case :) I really do think that's why he hasn't weighed in this evening, anyway.

Oh, and from the "fun with boredom and statistics" department, a quick aside on my shot total comment from earlier...last season's numbers:

Plattsburgh average vs. all opponents at home: +9.5 average SOG
Plattsburgh average vs. all opponents away: +7 (for around 2.5 shots' worth of "home cooking")

Oswego average vs. all opponents at home: +11.8 average SOG (!)
Oswego average vs. all opponents away: +3.3 (8.5 of "home cooking," or over 3x the disparity of a team that went 16-1-0 at home)

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

I agree completely, which is why I had Elmira ranked 13th and Hobart not ranked at all in my ballot. But that also makes my point for me. Geneseo beating Hobart is a testament to Hobart falling off, not Geneseo gaining a lot. So then why would Morrisville beating Geneseo be surprising? A mild upset, sure, but hardly unanticipated, since they did the same thing last year.

As far as the goalies, there was no reason for Gershon not to be confident tonight. He played a great game yesterday and was the absolutely the difference in that win. I think my point was more in general: Does Schultz do too much tweaking? Of lines, goaltenders, gameplans, whatever. Is it possible to get into your head that if you have one bad game or make one crucial mistake you're not dressing next week (if you're a skater) or starting next week (if you're a goaltender) and play too tight? Schultz has gotten a bit irked with me when asking postgame questions about lineup shifts, but I think it's a fair question, especially when we look at the trend of Geneseo not having 4-0 victories over teams like Morrisville or Potsdam or Cortland.

I don't doubt Schultz is a coach with a lot of hockey knowledge, but I'm not sure he's an effective enough motivator. By all means Steve (or anybody else) disagree with me here if you think I'm wrong, because I don't want that opinion to hang out there uncontested if people feel differently.

I do agree Morrisville's early season success could turn into an intriguing storyline. Playoff-eligible for the first time, could we see the Mustangs crack the top 6? They're right there now.

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Actually we are heading downtown .....its okay after 10 straight non wins I'm glad you finally get a win....

New top 5?

New top 5?

Manhattanville
St. Norbert
Oswego
River Falls
Adrian/Plattsburgh?

Look something like that...In no particular order except M'Ville and SNC would probably get a majority of the #1 votes I would guess.

After that its a mess.

Neumann
Scholastica
Amherst
Middlebury
Norwich

Should all still be ranked but after that it really is a crapshoot.

I'll be interested to see how Matt and Josh vote this week. I hope they post their ballots again and I'd be interested in how they unscramble the mess.

Especially Josh, he usually does an excellent job explaining why he put every team exactly where he did.

River Falls lost to Gustavus last night, and quite frankly, is not a top five team right now in my mind. I like the Falcons, but being as objective as possible I just don't believe they are one of the best five teams out there.

Debating. I probably won't as I'd answer every question about mine by just linking to the rather lengthy previous post of mine in this thread.

Q: At this time, why should I believe Oswego is better than Plattsburgh?
