Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Re: New top 5?

Re: New top 5?

I'll be interested to see how Matt and Josh vote this week. I hope they post their ballots again and I'd be interested in how they unscramble the mess.

Especially Josh, he usually does an excellent job explaining why he put every team exactly where he did.

Are you feeling all right Derek? And like Matt, I'm not sure I'll be putting up my ballot. It's difficult for me to not want to respond to every reply or people asking questions, and I don't have the time to do that. Maybe I'll throw something up with a short explanation, as it does seem like people generally appreciate hearing my reasoning (and some people enjoy vehemently disagreeing with it), but we'll see.

Fredonia @ Elmira

Fredonia @ Elmira

- Decent crowd ... probably ~700 despite what the stats say. Quite a few students (b'ball hasn't yet commenced)
- Fredonia has a decent size team and above average speed, and hustles nicely. On D, they funnel everything away from the slot, and allow only bad angle shots
- Both teams packed it in during the first, and played counter attack
- In the second Fred picked up the tempo
- Neither team is very skilled nor playing coherent hockey; makes for some very ragged stretches
- I saw the net flutter before the horn sounded on the contested goal, but not the puck itself ... I believe they got it right.
- EC gives up waaaaay too many SHGs, and although they scored 3 of 4 on the PP, it still isn't clicking
- EC still hasn't gelled yet, but with some key players still out, that's to be expected.
- EC (at this time) is not a top 15 team

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Must have been an interesting finish to the Bethel @ UWSP game last night ... UWSP had 9 penalties for a total of 29 minutes. A hard earned win for sure as they played a third of the game down a man

3rd Korey O'Brien UWSP 5 SLASHING 14:24 PP
3rd TEAM UWSP 10 OBSCENE LANGUAGE 20:00

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

You would think so, yes. That's what I've always witnessed. I've seen many players say the magic words to a referee and pretty soon, bam, 10 minutes. But I don't think I've ever heard the PA announcer say that someone got 10 for obscene language, and I don't think I've seen it show up in the box score like that, either.

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Isn't Obscene language just unsportsman like conduct?
Not necessarily. If you don't want to put the team down, and send a message to the player, than a 10 minute misconduct is the preferred alternative. If you get REAL nasty to the ref, he CAN give your a DQ.

It's real fun when you give it to the goaltender.

But given this situation, you can't give a misconduct to the bench, it must be to an individual player. Therefore a bench minor was the proper penalty.

I saw a goaltender get a 10 at Yost. Al Montoya said the wrong thing to a referee after he gave up a goal, and before you know it, he was in the box. The whole Michigan student section started the chant "FREE MONTOYA! - clap-clap-clapclapclap"

Re: New top 5?

River Falls lost to Gustavus last night, and quite frankly, is not a top five team right now in my mind. I like the Falcons, but being as objective as possible I just don't believe they are one of the best five teams out there.

I know what you are saying but how about Augsburg and Gustavas lose to Eau Claire over the weeekend. Match ups I guess, so early in the seaon and it will take a few more games for things to skake out. Will see what happens next weeknd when RF plays Eau Claire

Elmira's problem,I don't know really what it is.....is it their new coaching? did they lose alot of seniors last season? Casey Tuttle seems like himself......Anyone think they know why Elmira's not getting off to a hot start like in the past?

Just from my observations, a few injuries and the fact that this Elmira team is just not "Gelling" right now, inconsistent play. Giving up two SHG in one game is a huge problem, last team to do that against EC was Hobart
One thing for sure, it looks like the ECAC-W is going to be as tight as ever this year.

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Brendan Sanders and Jack Day were in the lineup last night, so besides Shrank I'm not sure who you consider to be "key" that wasn't playing last night for EC.

I think the main problem again is the team playing together as a whole. Linden had a horrible turnover that led directly to a Fredonia goal. I think Morrisville is just as good as Fredonia is from what I saw last night.

I geuss the SUNYAC is getting tighter as well.;)

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

I think my point was more in general: Does Schultz do too much tweaking? Of lines, goaltenders, gameplans, whatever. Is it possible to get into your head that if you have one bad game or make one crucial mistake you're not dressing next week (if you're a skater) or starting next week (if you're a goaltender) and play too tight?

I don't doubt Schultz is a coach with a lot of hockey knowledge, but I'm not sure he's an effective enough motivator. By all means Steve (or anybody else) disagree with me here if you think I'm wrong, because I don't want that opinion to hang out there uncontested if people feel differently.

We've heard a lot about "over-coaching" during the past 4-5 weeks. The person thought to be guilty of "over-coaching" (Joe Girardi) ended up winning the World Series. Did he win despite that flaw? or was his managing style effective? Either way I'm probably not willing to hit Schultz with the over-coaching label, but you're right Josh he is at least on the edge. It seemed to me he sits skaters when the issues are along the lines of bad penalties/ not hussling/mental mistakes not so much shots off target/passing wasn't in sync/etc. With the goalies I think the past two years he has had two goalies on about the same level so splitting time (especially early in the season) makes sense so both are ready to go in case of injury.

I'd say Schultz may be an inconsistent motivator. As we both have mentioned Geneseo seems to play up and down to their level of competition. So whatever portion of the praise he gets for the win over Hobart he must get the same portion of the blame for the loss to Morrissville.

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Elmira and Hobart were both over ranked to begin the year, and its because in my opinion people based their rankings on how the teams did last season.Just like with Neumann,People rank them #2 in the country yet they lost more than half their team last season(and have 14 freshman this year on their roster),because of seniors. And you rank Neumann #2 and look they lose and tie to an unranked team.Neumann is still a great team with Fantastic Coaching, but their simply not last years team and don't have the experience that they had last season. Is it the same deal with Hobart and Elmira?

We know with Hobart its their whole Goaltending situation, they just can't find another longo out their to lift them to victories like in the past, and maybe theirs more, thats just what i hear on the grapevine whats troubling them.

Elmira's problem,I don't know really what it is.....is it their new coaching? did they lose alot of seniors last season? Casey Tuttle seems like himself......Anyone think they know why Elmira's not getting off to a hot start like in the past?

And your right collegehcky2,I don't realize a lot of things with teams in the SUNYAC.The two real divisons that i know are the EcacWest and SUNYAC.....remember to guys,I'm still relativly new at College hockey and i don't know a lot about teams outside the teams that Utica plays.

You really are hurting your argument for Utica to be ranked this week. I certainly think they could and perhaps should be, but from what you were saying last week and yesterday, you're starting to tear down your argument now.

I try to avoid getting on announcers, but in case the new Genny guys read the board, the Statesmen were last night - it's the Mustangs* tonight.

After 2 periods of play

Morrisville 3
Geneseo 1

* Also acceptable: "Little Ponies"

It might be time to retire that nickname after 2 big wins so far this year. They also have the same amount of points as everyone in the SUNYAC other than Plattsburgh, Oswego, and Potsdam.

You can also make the argument that they should have beaten Brockport Friday...

Definitely an impressive weekend by the Blugolds, and maybe an essential one after two disappointing losses a week ago. Certain momentum builders heading into a NCHA series with River Falls. Typical DIII these days...Eau Claire loses to Marian and Lawrence then beats perhaps the two most impressive teams at the MIAC Showcase.

I think we'll be lucky if anything shakes itself out in the next few weeks. Odds are we'll be here in early March still lacking much of an idea as to what's going on. :)

Re: Saturday 11/7 Scores, Rants, All of the Above

Given the celebration that would be appropriate had Plattsburgh won, that might have been the case :) I really do think that's why he hasn't weighed in this evening, anyway.

Oh, and from the "fun with boredom and statistics" department, a quick aside on my shot total comment from earlier...last season's numbers:

Plattsburgh average vs. all opponents at home: +9.5 average SOG
Plattsburgh average vs. all opponents away: +7 (for around 2.5 shots' worth of "home cooking")

Oswego average vs. all opponents at home: +11.8 average SOG (!)
Oswego average vs. all opponents away: +3.3 (8.5 of "home cooking," or over 3x the disparity of a team that went 16-1-0 at home)

Years ago, Brockport were the "champions" at padding their team's SOG. Sometimes to the point of absurdity.

The funny thing is, what they don't realize is you also pad the opposing goaltenders stats...

That nickname didn't come from their play, but rather from their AD's insistence that cheering be kept to a minimum, for fear of players' feelings getting hurt... or something like that.
