RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Yes, I'm starting this slightly earlier than the official closure of the previous one. It's over 1,000 posts. I had a revelation to add and I added it. Also, the other one got stupid at the end. :D

For Ralph's archival purposes, this is the 2009-10 Engineers season thread Volume 5. I just find the season repeatedly being in the title is annoying.

Thought I'd kick things off with a bang: Without a Peer's exclusive interview with Seth Appert

RC, thanks for a great interview. Once again, you brought us information that we could not have gotten anywhere else.
Some of us really appreciate the effort you bring to this thread.
Good luck with your stalkers.

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Also SA confirmed a few things that have been mentioned about next year's schedule. I assume the trip to CC is for two games.
Looks like next years schedule is starting to come together.

22- ECAC league games
2 - @ Alabama Huntsville (around New Years)
2 - @ Colorado College
2 - RPI Holiday Tournament (UConn, BG and UAH)
1 - @ Lake Placid (vs either SLU, Clarkson or Union)
1 - @ Army
1 - Bentley
1 - @ Northeastern
1 - Boston University

Thats 33 out of a possible 34 games. Im thinking that last game is a home game vs a HE or AHA team. Also might see an exhibition game against a Canadian school or the U-18 team.

Very skeptical about the Lake Placid event actually happening. Outside of the rumors on here, nobody seems to know anything about it. Glad BU is coming in and hoping the date at Matthews is one I can make.

I know someone will slap my hand on this one but the games at Alabama Huntsville will be close enough to Flordia for Jacob Laliberte to take a working vacation.

I believe it was originally rumored to be a tournament type deal. I contacted the Olympic Center(probably two months ago now) to find out more information and I was told its a one day event now on Saturday October 30th, featuring two seperate games with RPI, Union, Clarkson and SLU. Wasnt told what the pairings of the games would be. Things could have changed since then however.

Correct. It's a one-dayer - two games. CD vs. NC.

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

I'm a little late to the party on this back and forth from the end of the last thread, but I must clarify a little.

As the primary author of the Ten Commandments of RPI Hockey, let me add some insight into where the 9th Commandment originated from. There's a group of fans at the HFH that take exception to one of the cheers. So much so that they have gone so far as to make T-shirts explaining so, and using air horns to try and drown it out. They routine throw personal insults such as "I can't believe you're so dumb" and the like. All because of one cheer. The 9th Commandment reflects that we are all there to cheer on our favorite team. Why get bogged down in pettiness like them? As such, we take the high road and ignore them.

That being said, the 9th Commandment is not meant to spurn healthy discussion on topics with which we may not agree. Also, this does not mean you can't call out folks who head toward the exits with several minutes left to play in the third when the team is down by a few. The First Church routinely heckles these folks out as they walk past us.

I still can't believe some people started leaving with time left in the 2nd period of BRF. Classless, in my opinion. Hence the 10th Commandment ;)
Perhaps you might consider sharing the 10C's for those posters and lurkers who are unfamiliar? (Just a thought...so the "next generation" can be initiated.)

I would recommend looking on the First Church of RPI Hockey wiki. The link should be available in hawthr's signature.

I'm not looking for them for crissakes, I just thought Hawthr might want to post them here, for the newbies:...and yes, this should be reproduced in T-shirt form!

III. Thou shalt not call thy own goalie 'Sieve'
IV. Remember thy hockey schedule, to keep it holy
V. Honor thy coach and thy players
VI. Thou shalt kill all penalties
VII. Thou shalt always remember that Clarkson sucks
VIII. Thou shalt giveth the puck to the kid
IX. Thou shalt not bicker with thy fellow fans
X. Thou shalt not leave thy holy house before thy team

Boy am I glad there isn't anything about coveting thy neighbor's wife in there:D

Re: RPI V: Chase for the Championship (and Hobey)

Sorry, but as far as the "9th commandment" is concerned, I need to chime in here...

I don't sit with the gentleman who owns the "It's Not Debatable," t-shirt, but find it hilarious. The "cheer" is probably the worst (and most obnoxious) I've ever heard at a hockey game, other than the completely out of place "d-fense!" chants. Understand that this has nothing to do with supporting/not supporting the home team. It has to with being embarrassed as hockey fan since I was born.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for creative and spirited chants at the HFH. I love when the place if full and loud, even it means new blood. I just wish there was a way to say to those who don't get it:

"Come to games. Learn from those around you, then get creative. If you're not creative or don't know hockey (or both), don't start things."

I know this is impossible as people will always scream "shoot it" every 30 seconds, no matter if there's a shooting lane or not. Oh well, we all have pipe dreams.

I remember listening to WGR before a Sabres game, and they were talking about this very thing. They had mentioned that usually this is done to look for a possible backdoor pass to the guy in "the office", and that people should scream "Backdoor pass!" instead of "Shoot it!". So sometimes when people are yelling "Shoot it!", I'll yell "Backdoor pass!". :D

But you're absolutely right, I'd rather have us work for the good shot, rather than throw a puck that will likely get blocked by a forward.

I find the back and forth hilarious, to be quite honest. It's an argument about semantics.

The "cheer" is probably the worst (and most obnoxious) I've ever heard at a hockey game, other than the completely out of place "d-fense!" chants.

You have got to be kidding me on both fronts. Worst? Most obnoxious? Wow. You have extremely high standards.

And what's out of place about chanting "defense" during a penalty kill? THAT'S WHAT YOU DO ON A PENALTY KILL.

It has to with being embarrassed as hockey fan since I was born.

Uh... you know what I'd be embarrassed about? Calling myself "redhawk." Bu-CAW!
