RPI & Union @ Colgate & Cornell (2/26, 2/27)

Re: RPI & Union @ Colgate & Cornell (2/26, 2/27)

In this instance, the most major effect that this one game has on Union's position in the PWR is vis a vis their comparison with Cornell. Sure it's good to get the leg up in that comparison (and a win would flip the comparison to the Dutchmen), especially since they're relatively close together in the PWR, but it's one comparison out of 24. While it's a game against a TUC, UC still doesn't have 10 games against TUCs (which goes back to the importance of the Engineers and/or SLU becoming TUCs) so it doesn't have that kind of impact. It has impact on Union's RPI, but so does every game they play. The only other place the game has an impact on is with other TUCs who have played Cornell, but in most cases this one game won't impact those COp criteria and won't have direct impact on comparison wins. In each case where Cornell is a common opponent with a TUC, there's not enough of a potential for change through a single game, be it a win or a loss.
RC,
I haven't gone through the calculations, but is there much of a chance for either RPI or SLU to become TUCs at this point?

At this point in the season, if you're between 26th and 32nd or so (which both are, although SLU is right on the cutoff), I consider that team to be a potential TUC. The line moves up to 30th (where RPI is) by the time the WCHA starts its playoff run.

It's possible but they're going to have to put together some wins and start seeing teams like Lowell, Michigan, UMass, and Lake State drop a few. It's not real likely after this weekend.

Re: RPI & Union @ Colgate & Cornell (2/26, 2/27)

Union has a ton to play for on both Friday and Saturday as I think it is safe to say that Union hopes their season continues past the ECAC Tournament and into the NCAAs. In order to do this, they can't afford to drop games as that would significantly hurt their PWR and put them out of the NCAAs.
Dropping a game to a non-TUC (and Colgate has almost 0% chance of becoming a TUC), is very different from losing to a TUC when entering into PWR discussions. As has been pointed out by myself and Union posters, the significance of Friday's game far outweighs that of Saturday's game. Depending on how the chips fall, the impact of Saturday's game against Colgate may be absolutely zero on their regular season standing within the ECAC.

The Dutchmen have some injuries and may let some of their fourth-liners play a couple extra shifts, instead of pushing MVT, Pres, and the Walters brothers as hard as possible. I'm not suggesting that they go Indianapolis Colts-style and completely abandon winning as a concept. I just don't expect that the intensity that Union brings to the game against Colgate is the same intensity that they brought to Messa or the HFH in late November, early December, or mid-January (if it has no bearing on the standings).

Geez. I didn't expect to get this much shiit from Yale backers over teams not giving 150% on the last game of the regular season when their position for the ECAC playoffs has been locked up.

All this PWR discussion is very interesting if a bit confusing to the uninitiated (i.e. probably most Union fans). Just wondering, do the calculations go right through the conference championships or is it regular season only?

Every game played this season (not including exhibitions) get counted. So, all in-season and conference tourneys are included.

The intrepid Kenny Schott attended RPI practice this afternoon. He reports that Allen York practiced.

"...Following today's practice, York said he felt fine. York sprained his ankle in the Feb. 13 game at Dartmouth. RPI coach Seth Appert isn't ready to say York will start in Friday's crucial game against Colgate because he wasn't happy with how York practiced."

There's supposed to be a pretty decent winter storm here tomorrow night..... I know it's one day off, but hopefully the games will still be on.

Re: RPI & Union @ Colgate & Cornell (2/26, 2/27)

Update on the weather: The Winter Storm warning expires at 1PM on Friday, at least for this county, which probably means an hour or two later for Madison County (which is where Hamilton is located). Take your time in getting out here, fellow Engineer fans.

This is the weekend that Polacek needs to shine in my opinion to keep himself even in the mix of names for the Hobey Baker award. But all things said it doesnt matter about the individual awards it only matters if the team wins and puts itself in a great position for the playoffs. Looking forward to watching/listening to two hard fought games and hopefully the puck goes our way this weekend.

Hobey is a great award but he is only a junior. So long as he is in the discussion that's OK with me. I do want to see him named as an all American.

No slight intended, but I had a chance to watch some of the BRF on TW3 last night, and RPI REALLY needs York in goal this weekend.
