Ralph Baer;4523891 Kevin Cole (Cornell recruit) ...got two separate unsportsmanlike conduct minors and a checking from behind game misconduct.[/QUOTE said:
He'll fit right in at SUNY Ithaca...

What kind of a bike do you have Ralph? I assume it is a road bike. Is it a racing bike or a hybrid or a mountain bike with slicks?

I have several. This one is a touring bike (Trek 520) although I never use it for loaded touring. I was having it tuned up. Why I did it today with a lot of snow forecst isn't too clear.

I notice in the boxscore two Colts players received "Protective Equipment Misconduct" "M24" penalties for 10 minutes each, im guessing it has something to do with a helmet? I've never heard of this before.

Section 24 in the rulebook addresses protective equipment --helmets/ visors/ mouthpieces. Most violations result in minor penalties. I'm guessing Ralph's mouthpiece theory is correct as they both got 10 min. misconducts.

From Sect. 24: "...For divisions of hockey that allow the wearing of the half
visor, the wearing of a mouth guard is compulsory (rec-
ommended but optional for senior hockey). When a
player fails to properly wear a mouth guard at any time
on the ice during the game, he shall be assessed a
Misconduct penalty.

I don't know the rules for hockey, but in basketball the requirement is a full academic year. However, it doesn't have to start in September. There have been cases where a transfer played the fall season at one school, then sat out the spring and fall terms to become eligible to play the 2nd portion of the season at his new school. In that case he can start playing immediately after the conclusion of the fall term (generally about now). However, the price is that those two half-seasons each count as a full season for eligibility - so the athlete will end up playing at most the equivalent of 3 seasons in total.

It sounds like it is still up in the air as to wether Curadi will be in Troy next year or stay in the BCHL for another year.

His Coach talks about the commitment at about 6 minutes in.

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

A full academic year or a full Calendar year? If he only played 1 game and left then it has been a full calendar year and one could argue a full academic year (spring and fall semester). Dovetails right in to Morissette's spot.

Academic year. While Scott only played in one game in '08-'09, because he left the program on his own accord, it burned a year of eligibility, making '09-'10 his "sit out" year. As RB pointed out, its the exact same scenario as Bailen & E. Burger. That leaves them all with 3 years remaining.

It's interesting that his coach said it will be a full ride. That not only has implications for timing (unless someone else leaves I can't see a full scholarship being available before 2011), but also with regard to his college choice. Those that criticized him for reneging on UMass should consider the very real possibility that he was offered only a partial scholarship because he was not well known. It's quite likely that after he was seen last season by more schools the message was, "Go play juniors for a year or two and you'll surely get a full ride." So it's not a simple apples-to-apples comparison between UMass and RPI.

Another tidbit for Doc from the Vees site: "...Luke Curadi had an assist and some big hits on Wednesday."

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

As it turns out, Scott is a forward who also plays defense. This is what gopherpucklive had to say about him as a freshman:

Grant Scott
Freshman/Defense
Previous Team: USNTDP

"Of the entire freshman group joining the team this fall, Grant Scott may be the most intriguing of the bunch. No, he isn’t has hyped as the likes of Aaron Ness or Jordan Schroeder, but Scott – a native of Sewickley, Penn. – has great size for his age and has the ability to play both wing and defense. But most of all, he has shown that he’s not opposed to using his size to his advantage in the past, and that is certainly something any Gopher team could use.

....Scott could earn more playing time on the backend because of his 6’3”, 205 lb. frame, which is much larger than any other Gopher blueliner.

Scott has bounced between forward and defense for much of the last two seasons, playing for both the Under-17 and Under-18 teams for the U.S. National Team Develop Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. During the summer of 2007 at the Select 17 Festival in St. Cloud, the USHL rated Scott an “A” forward, but he struggled playing up front for the U18 team this past season.

... Scott will likely start his career off at defense. His skating could hurt him on Olympic-sized ice sheets early on in his career, so look for the coaching staff to pick their spots with Scott early on."
---------------------------
As it turns out, Scott didn't dress for a game until the end of Jan. 09. The last sentence sums it up:
"...Grant Scott and Drew Fisher have both been nearly invisible in the first period. Scott saw one shift early in the period and that was it, we haven’t seen either one since. Really makes you wonder if it was worth giving up his redshirt for the game?..."

His full ride probably isn't all athletic money. From what has been posted and said in interviews, he is probably getting at least some academic money. For all I know there is some special RPI funding for sons of Iraq veterans. It is pretty clear that SA is getting creative with giving out money.

I think it would be better stated that SA is becoming as creative as Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Union, et al have been for years.

Re: RPI Recruiting II: Knowlton's Rangers (enlistments open)

No offense, Kyle, but Union really only recently figured out how to play the scholarship game. Remember back when Hull was aghast at Sneddon trying to use international scholarships on Canadians? Not to mention they sucked for 16 years and voted against 65-1 as the only school in the nation who was in a conference with affected teams to do so. They took their time wrapping their heads around scholarships. Glad to see they've figured it out.

Soon after making a wise, hasty retreat to Burlington.
