He did go to an American Prep school (Lake Forest Academy) last year, but prior to that he played for Quebec teams with French names. FWIW, the BCHL lists him as living in Salmon Arm, but I suspect that is wrong. The article which I linked, as you obviously noticed, mentions St-Bruno-de-Montarville as do most other sites.

Over the years we've recruited several players from English speaking suburbs around Montreal (Brad Layzell comes to mind) but I'm pretty sure that isn't one of them.

Yes, of course. I was trying to indicate that everything pointed to him being a francophone, but he apparently isn't. His voice really surprised me when I heard it, as it undoubtedly did to all of the other RPI fans who listened. It didn't surprise me that he spoke English, as many are bilingual, but the lack of an accent did.

Stratford's Tyler Hotson chasing pro hockey dream after committing to RPI

It was a decision years in the making, and one Tyler Hotson wanted to put behind him.

After committing to RPI on a hockey scholarship starting in 2022, the 17-year-old from Stratford can continue chasing his dream, but without the stress of choosing a school.

“I think getting it behind me now makes it easier for these next couple years, and I’m really looking forward to getting there and (pursuing) my goal of trying to become a pro hockey player,” he said.

Hotson was talking to a few American schools, but RPI, an NCAA Division 1 program that plays in the Eastern College Athletic Conference, showed the most interest in him.

“They were hard on me and really wanted me,” he said, “and I felt like RPI was a team I could play for that could help fulfil my dreams and help me become a professional hockey player.”

Unable to visit the Troy, N.Y. campus because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, Hotson was sold on virtual tours, photos, and multiple zoom calls with RPI officials.

“From the stuff they sent, I could tell it’s a great place to play college hockey and a great atmosphere and great city to be around,” he said. “Everything they sent me jumped out at me, and it was everything I needed to see without being able to go there.”

Hotson, like most kids, had high hopes for his hockey future in his early years, but making the Toronto Bulldogs’ team that won the Brick Invitational Tournament in 2013 was the turning point. The event, which features some of the top 10-year-olds in North America, is played each summer in the West Edmonton Mall. More than 200 players who have competed there have played in the NHL, according to an ESPN story in September.

“Just seeing all those good players at that tournament … I knew once I made that team and was playing with those guys something good could happen,” he said.

Hotson made his junior hockey debut last season with the Listowel Cyclones. He scored 18 goals and finished with 35 points in 50 regular season games, then added a goal in five playoff games against Stratford.

“I think Listowel was a great learning experience for me,” Hotson said. “The coaches there … did a great job helping me develop and get to where I am right now. Everything about there was good for my development.”

Looking to take another step in 2020-21, Hotson enrolled in St. Andrew’s College, an all-boys prep school in Aurora, Ont. With no games to play so far because of the pandemic, Hotson and his teammates are on the ice every day and in the gym four or five times a week.

“I thought if I went there, Dave Manning is a great coach, and going there could help my development and push me in the right way to get a D1 hockey scholarship.”

Now that it’s out of the way, Hotson can focus on improving his game — especially his skating and speed — while maturing physically to make a successful transition the same way he did in junior.

“It’ll be kind of the same experience, and hopefully I’ll be more ready,” he said. “When you’re close to your 20s, everyone starts to even out more.

“I’ll be right there with them.”

Even though Al-Azem's game was a league game, the box score was not posted. I will keep checking.
