RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

Wiffen will be in Troy due to his age. He has used up his junior eligibility. Hayhurst is possible, but unlikely, since his own twitter page says 2016.

Assuming that he recovers, Evan Tironese should be a noteworthy additions. The other two forwards whom I am expecting, Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Fornaris, are greater mysteries. Rodriguez may be suffering in the USHL like Miller did and turn out to be as good as some write-ups last year. Fornaris has improved from last season but he is in an easier league. Todd Burgess could show up, but I don't expect him until 2016.
I know they are all scheduled to be here in the next 2 years. It seems to be a talented group that could help turn its program around. My concern is that if RPI chooses to change coached, will they all come? Losing Wiffen and tironese would set the program revival back couple of more years.

I always worry about that also, but that should not be the primary consideration about whether we should change coaches. We went through that when we lost Chris Huxley to Harvard when Fridgen was let go. If the player has signed a letter of intent, he can't leave but no one wants an unhappy player. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

The years the men's recruits are listed as committed for are not necessarily accurate.
The dates on which some of the women are listed as committing on may be considerably after the actual dates.

I am a little more concerned with the lack of commitments in the last few months. Haven't gotten one since Babichuk in November. It can't help to have the play on the ice we've had in the last few months. I'm hoping to see a couple commits sooner than later.

Vines was not behind the bench during the Cornell/Colgate weekend. Perhaps he is picking up a recruit or two.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

On Saturday, the Sioux City Musketeers defeated the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders 4-1. Alex Rodriguez had no points or penalties. http://ushlstats.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=2469965

Rodriguez's line is now 38-5-9-14-55.

Rodriguez is buried behind a very talented forward set on the Musketeers team. He was almost invisible on the offensive end but I did watch him closely on a couple shifts so I could contribute to this thread. You can see some skill but again the opportunities were limited as he was the 13th forward on the line chart. When he was on the ice his compete level was noticeable and he really battled in the corners. Good depth forward for the Muskies.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

AS expected the box score for SAC's game isn't up. SAC won and advances to the league finals. No goals for Austin Cho.

Thanks for the evaluation. He will probably fill that job description, at least next season, at RPI also.

Post 204 has been modified to add the dates for the next games for Babichuk, Hayhurst and Wiffen.

I'm not worried about not adding anyone recently. 2015 has been in the books for some time and from Ralph's reports there are probably only a couple of spots left open for 2016. Holding on to current commits, because of the dismal record the past two years or because of a change in coaches should be the prime focus at this point.

Assuming that Schroeder and Kasdorf stay next season, it looks like we will get back to 12 forwards with Rodriguez, Wiffen, Tironese and Fornaris arriving and Manley and Moore replacing the graduating defensemen. So we are done there.

For 2016 we will then need to replace four forwards (Schroder, Bubela, Fulton, Miller) and we have Hayhurst and Burgess. So we need two more. On defense we have Cho but we lose three (Bokenfohr, Bradley, Hampton). We may only need one since nine isn't really our norm. Again Kasdorf could stay but may not.

In summary, we still need more for 2016, and I would like to see some of these spots filled soon.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

I'm not sure of the current NCAA signing rules, but the next window when players can sign letters may not happen until after the Frozen Four, so there may be guys in the pipeline waiting for the window to open. I will defer to others who know the recuriting rules better than I. Needing 3-4 for 2016 isn't too bad right now. If they don't have anyone else sign in the next couple of months, you may need to worry.

I am still concerned about the short roster. That is one area that I think needs addressing. the coaches may disagree, but I would think that the ideal number of rostered players would be about 26 - 15 forwards, 8 def and 3 goalies. That gives you some options for sitting guys who may be a bit banged up or not doing everything they should be doing in practice and games, in the classroom, etc. It also allows the coaches to run normal practices even with 4-5 guys out with injuries.

You look at a non-collision sport like basketball and they have 13 scholarships. That means that on most teams there are 4 or 5 guys on scholarship that seldom, or never play. I believe that hockey has 18 full rides and you can suit up 20. You can split up some of those grants but at a place that charges close to $60K a year, it is still tough to have enough guys on the roster. It would be interesting to see if there is a way that some recruited ""walkons" could be enticed to come if the rules permitted. They may never get in a game, couldn't travel, would practice and participate in all team activities. All this may be wishful thinking, but too me, the low number of rostered players appears to be an issue.
