Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II
I agree with you that we are not really bad off WRT 2016, but a lot of other schools are just about finished. Part of the problem may be that most/all of the scholarship money is already spoken. E.g., of the three dmen we lose in 2016, only Bradley is likely to be on full or almost full scholarship. Bokenfohr is not getting any athletic scholarship money, as we know, and Hampton is likely to be close to that also. Cho is replacing Bradley, so the others may be late signees like Hampton was. (Hampton was signed on 5/29/12, but Bokenfohr was signed in February.)
They can use some creative financing on scholarships. For example, it is likely that Gillespie gets some money from a minority student program, and probably Fornaris and Rodriguez will also get such money in the future.I'm not sure of the current NCAA signing rules, but the next window when players can sign letters may not happen until after the Frozen Four, so there may be guys in the pipeline waiting for the window to open. I will defer to others who know the recuriting rules better than I. Needing 3-4 for 2016 isn't too bad right now. If they don't have anyone else sign in the next couple of months, you may need to worry.
I am still concerned about the short roster. That is one area that I think needs addressing. the coaches may disagree, but I would think that the ideal number of rostered players would be about 26 - 15 forwards, 8 def and 3 goalies. That gives you some options for sitting guys who may be a bit banged up or not doing everything they should be doing in practice and games, in the classroom, etc. It also allows the coaches to run normal practices even with 4-5 guys out with injuries.
You look at a non-collision sport like basketball and they have 13 scholarships. That means that on most teams there are 4 or 5 guys on scholarship that seldom, or never play. I believe that hockey has 18 full rides and you can suit up 20. You can split up some of those grants but at a place that charges close to $60K a year, it is still tough to have enough guys on the roster. It would be interesting to see if there is a way that some recruited ""walkons" could be enticed to come if the rules permitted. They may never get in a game, couldn't travel, would practice and participate in all team activities. All this may be wishful thinking, but too me, the low number of rostered players appears to be an issue.
