RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

I'm not sure of the current NCAA signing rules, but the next window when players can sign letters may not happen until after the Frozen Four, so there may be guys in the pipeline waiting for the window to open. I will defer to others who know the recuriting rules better than I. Needing 3-4 for 2016 isn't too bad right now. If they don't have anyone else sign in the next couple of months, you may need to worry.

I am still concerned about the short roster. That is one area that I think needs addressing. the coaches may disagree, but I would think that the ideal number of rostered players would be about 26 - 15 forwards, 8 def and 3 goalies. That gives you some options for sitting guys who may be a bit banged up or not doing everything they should be doing in practice and games, in the classroom, etc. It also allows the coaches to run normal practices even with 4-5 guys out with injuries.

You look at a non-collision sport like basketball and they have 13 scholarships. That means that on most teams there are 4 or 5 guys on scholarship that seldom, or never play. I believe that hockey has 18 full rides and you can suit up 20. You can split up some of those grants but at a place that charges close to $60K a year, it is still tough to have enough guys on the roster. It would be interesting to see if there is a way that some recruited ""walkons" could be enticed to come if the rules permitted. They may never get in a game, couldn't travel, would practice and participate in all team activities. All this may be wishful thinking, but too me, the low number of rostered players appears to be an issue.
They can use some creative financing on scholarships. For example, it is likely that Gillespie gets some money from a minority student program, and probably Fornaris and Rodriguez will also get such money in the future.

I agree with you that we are not really bad off WRT 2016, but a lot of other schools are just about finished. Part of the problem may be that most/all of the scholarship money is already spoken. E.g., of the three dmen we lose in 2016, only Bradley is likely to be on full or almost full scholarship. Bokenfohr is not getting any athletic scholarship money, as we know, and Hampton is likely to be close to that also. Cho is replacing Bradley, so the others may be late signees like Hampton was. (Hampton was signed on 5/29/12, but Bokenfohr was signed in February.)

Bokenfohr cannot receive scholarship money, considering he is also playing a D-III sport (i.e. golf). If you receive an athletic scholarship, you are restricted to the one sport associated with the scholarship.

That's the reason that I said "Bokenfohr is not getting any athletic scholarship money, as we know".

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

Jacob Hayhurst was named to the 2nd OJHL All-Prospect team http://ojhl.pointstreaksites.com/view/ojhl/news-21/news_286494.

Toronto Patriots forward Jacob Hayhurst is a native of Mississauga, Ontario. For the second consecutive season, Hayhurst has been named to the 2nd All-Prospect Team. Hayhurst improved in all offensive categories during his sophomore season, finishing second on the Patriots in scoring with 23 goals and 55 points. He was a member of Team OJHL Oates that captured the 2014 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge and is committed to the RPI Engineers for the 2016-17 season.

Note to self: The All-Star team will be named on Thursday.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

On Wednesday, the CAC Gregg Distributors defeated the Grande Prairie Ernies Sports Storm 7-3. They lead the best-of-five Division semifinal 1-0. Cory Babichuk did not dress. I guess that whatever kept him out the last week of the regular season must have been serious because he had several weeks off. http://www.amhl.ab.ca/finalScoresheet.php?sched_id=122&season_id=3

Babichuk's playoff line is now 0-0-0-0-0.
His total is 32-4-14-18-38.

Brady Wiffen made the OJHL First All-Star Team http://pointstreaksites.com/view/ojhl/news-21/news_286951.

Forward – Brady Wiffen (Trenton Golden Hawks)
(pictured bottom right - photo credit: Brian Watts/OJHL Images)
After recording just over a point-per-game last season, Brady Wiffen of the Trenton Golden Hawks would take his game to another level in 2014-15, registering more than a goal-per-game with a league-high 53 goals in 52 regular season contests. Wiffen became the first player in three years to hit the magical 50-goal milestone. Also the runner-up as the OJHL Top Scorer with 92 points this season, the Golden Hawks alternate captain was not only a key contributor to the club's power play unit, but also one of the leaders for the league's third best penalty killing unit. Trenton would top the charts this season with 16 shorthanded goals, of which Wiffen contributed an OJHL best five goals and eight points while down a man. The January Gongshow Gear North-East Conference Player-of-the-Month (also runner-up in November) was selected to play for Team OJHL Hawerchuk, leading the team in scoring with four points at the 2014 Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge, and is committed to join the RPI Engineers beginning next season.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

Previews of the Patriots - St. Mike's and Trenton - Wellington series. Both Hayhurst and Wiffen are mentioned several times. The only thing really worth noting is
Hayhurst’s release is as good as anyone’s at the Junior ‘A’ level
(It also may be worth noting that the Trenton article was lengthened by repeating four paragraphs and the stats at the end. ;) )

Austin Cho scored a goal as SAC won the first game of the CISAA finals. (Of course they play several games after the tourney.) I will post the summary after the box score is posted.

I will post the other summaries in the AM.

Meirs Moore is playing for Victoria http://www.bchl.ca/leagues/hockey_boxscores.cfm?clientID=1413&leagueID=2393&gameID=1358532&link=bchl.
Fairbanks (Burgess) hasn't started yet. http://nahl.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=2477423.

There are also two summaries of games which are over which I will post in the AM.
Nothing has been posted for CAC Gregg Distributors' (Babichuk) game. http://www.amhl.ab.ca/finalScoresheet.php?sched_id=123&season_id=3
As already mentioned, Austin Cho had a goal for SAC. http://cisaastats.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=2572320

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2014-15 Part II

On Friday, the Trenton Golden Hawks defeated the Wellington Dukes 6-4. They lead in the best-of-seven playoff series 1-0. Brady Wiffen had a hat trick (2 PPGs) and an assist. He was named #1 Star. :) http://ojhlsite.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=2634172

Wiffen's playoff line is now 1-3-1-4-0.
His total is 53-56-40-96-66.
RPI 64 Wiffen 56
They must’ve changed it in the Official Boxscore....2g, 2a for BW.
On Friday, the Sioux City Musketeers lost to the Tri-City Storm 4-3 in overtime. Alex Rodriguez had an assist. Alec Dillon saved 22 of 25 shots in 60:52. http://ushlstats.stats.pointstreak.com/boxscore.html?gameid=2470048

Rodriguez's line is now 41-5-10-15-55.
Dillon's line is now 32-19-11-0-2.17-.917.
Throw in an assist for AD.
