Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

Great to see this kid is finally getting into a groove. I now have some more confidence regarding his play for RPI next year.
He definitely is. It wouldn't surprise me, however, if he also takes a while to adapt next year, but assuming that we don't lose anyone, we can wait for him to develop.

FD: He will be fine. Impossible to predict how fast coach SA will fit him into the scheme of things but he has a lot of weapons. You will not be disappointed.

That is a key point-without the presure of immediate performance, he can just slide into the line up and get some experience. If we continue to have the depth we have this year at forward, it will take a lot of pressure off trying to adapt.

He was my backup view in case Lincoln wasn't a possibility. We're in good hands next year.

;) He's young... surpassing low expectations and having time to bloom is a good and realistic scenario.

I don't know him, and I am not a psychologist. I most certainly agree it will take off the pressure on having to produce, but some people can suffer more if they are not being given as much opportunity to produce which could be the case for the incoming players.

That is a potential problem with any recruit. This is where coach SA also has to be a bit of a psychologist-and I think he is. He certainly seemed to figure out a way to motivate and get the most out of many freshmen this year. And even get some of the sophs going. I had been given very high hopes for a few of the boys that others dismissed as less than stellar before coming to RPI. He has gotten a lot more out of some of these boys already than many has expected. You must admit-there have been some upside surprises for us-even if it took a bit of time. Any new freshman has a couple of jobs to do-one of course, is to figure out how to play at a new level with the NCAA being a pretty large step up from wherever they came. The other, is learning to play for the coach who is running the show and demanding the game be played a certain way. This can be daunting fro some. But when it begins to work, and the underlying talent is there to begin with, you can get some fabulous results. From what I have heard, next year's recruit class is good-somewhat above average. Add that to the last 2 years of similar recruiting and we may have a very good team for the next 2 years at least.

I agree that SA appears to have good psychological instincts -- also the injuries that we have been having have allowed him to get players into the lineup who wouldn't be playing nearly as much otherwise. Next year, we should have one more forward than this year, so it will however be even harder to get playing time.

I have said several times, that the incomng group of forwards appears to be better than those who are leaving.

As you know I have only seen one of the incoming boys in person. Very difficult to compare to what we lose through graduation. No one has his speed and effortless skating. But there are just so many intangibles and skills you need to have for the next level. is the potential there? Without question. Will everything come together and develop? Who knows. Lots of people with much more knowledge than I have have said he is just a top notch recruit. BTW, some of these same people said the same to me about McGowan, Laliberte, Bubela and Curadi. They seem to be coming along quite well.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13 (Part II)

from the Free Archives (Nov.'12) of USHR...... Carlos Fornaris, F, Jr (NMH) 5-8/160 — Is probably a little small and slight right now to be offered a D-I scholarship, but boy is the Miami, Florida native crafty. Is as slippery as they come, and is very effective in high-traffic areas. Plays with an edge and is not shy to mix it up. Needs to get bigger and stronger, but will no doubt put up a ton of points over the next two seasons. http://www.ushr.com/news/20121101

Turk-you know I like most of the forwards on my team to be big-but not necessarily all. Remember Vermont back in the 90's? Ruid was a very big forward and paired with 2 much smaller layers-Eric Perrin (pretty good college player and even NHL level player) and that other guy-what was his name again? Oh Martin St Louis-seems he is still around somewhere. I can always make room for a smaller player with one big caveat-he has got to be able to stay on his skates when pushed or hit around. Gionta could and St Louis could. There are boys who play small even when they are 6'4 and weigh 225. And there are a few very much smaller boys who play well with what they have. We have a couple now. Laliberte is still small, by any standards-but he has become a major cog in the RPI machine. I love the mix we have now-some bigger forwards with size, strength and reach (Bubela can reach pucks that no one else can get to). Only on defense do I absolutely stick by my feeling that most pairs have to be of the bigger variety. Bailen is the exception-we need the offense from the blue line he provides desperately. And his movement up into the play is exceptional. But it is nice to be able to allow him to do that with bigger boys around to take up the defensive slack. When NHL teams have an offensie force on the blue line-like a Brian leach-they usually still pair them with a stay at home, monster like Jeff Beukeboom I have no fear about Fornaris. I have not seen him at all but if SA feels he was worth it, I have to think he knows something that we will see in a few years.

How did I miss that a few days ago? :o

Me too. IMHO, SA has had an exemplary record in evaluating talent. There are very few players whom he has recruited who I feel have not lived up to their reputation. (I won't name names.)

BTW, still looking for someone who has access to the USHR database or elsewhere who can provide Fonaris' stats for the recently concluded season.

Nice SHG by Evan Tironese. Thanks to a WaP tweet for the link.

BTW, Ryan Lough #9 who is involved in the SHG is an SLU recruit.
