I think it's a symptom of all sports. Even in football, a cornerback will rarely get good mention for effectively covering a star wide receiver, should the quarterback realize he can never throw the ball to that WR. It never shows up on the score sheet, but it's very important towards the outcome of the game. The same thing applies with a stay-at-home defence player in hockey. He doesn't show up on the score sheet, but is very vital.
I don't really pay attention to the three stars, as it's solely a media hype to accentuate the score sheet.
