Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2011-12 Part II

it's already been mentioned that Mike Zalewski was anmed Veron's MVP but from http://vipersdiehardfan.blogspot.com/2012/03/vipers-name-zalewski-mvp.html

Second-year power winger Mike Zalewski was the Vipers’ top scorer with 38 goals and 75 points after a 12-goal rookie season. The 19-year-old New Yorker also claimed the team’s MVP trophy. He’s headed to play for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers near his New Hartford home on a scholarship next season.

“He’s a great guy, a very skilled hockey player,” said John Knisley, a fellow New York State boy who’s off to the Colgate Big Red next fall.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if you see him playing pro hockey in a couple of years here. Just a great all-around player.”

Zalewski leaves the Vipers as perhaps the best prankster and videographer in team history. Knisley figures Zee may have a future in Hollywood.

“He knows how to make the videos. He’s pretty good at it. He’s a character.”

If he doesn't make it as a hockey player he could join RPI-TV. :D

The guess that to someone in BC, Troy is near New Hartford.

Colgate Big Red again. At least they are consistant.

I while ago I mentioned there were some rumors about the USHL expanding further eastward. It seems those rumors have picked up and it looks like Lewiston,ME is going to get a USHL franchise in a couple years. Another potential eastern market being mentioned is Glens Falls, once the AHL team moves to Allentown. How sweet would that be to see some RPI recruits playing in the USHL and not have to drive 9 hours to see a game. :) Would also make it a lot easier for the coaches to scout/recruit and would definitely lower the amount spent on recruiting trips for the school.

Great news. Regarding Lewiston, though, is the Q moving out of town?

I wonder how this would affect schedules. These places aren't exactly near the USHL's current midwestern teams.

Given they don't exactly have weekend series in the current USHL but typically play their games on the weekends, I wouldn't be surprised if they did some sort of "travel partnering" when it came time to play these two teams, where you'd play Glens Falls one night and Lewiston the next. Maybe throw Youngstown into that mix during the weeks where they play 3 games.

Lewiston isn't really near Glens Falls. Some of the other places mentioned could also get teams and a separate division without much interlocking might make sense.

I guess the biggest question is how they make it work with Youngstown. Obviously they have a solid thoroughfare to town in the Ohio Pike (which connects to the Indiana Toll Road on its way to Chicago).

Youngstown does host some teams twice in a weekend. Looking at a map of the USHL teams http://www.icethetics.info/blog/2010/8/8/ushl-logo-map.html, there are several teams that are not that far from yioungstown.

Uhhh... I would say the closest is either Indiana Ice or Chicago Steel, MAYBE the U-18/U-17 teams (given their travel to Toledo). It's pretty far from Youngstown to Chicago, though (takes about half a day to drive there, maybe a little more, of course it's been a long time since I've traveled it; Indiana's speed limit was still 65).

Heading west to Chicago one gains an hour due to the time zone shift. :p
