I could be totally confused, but my recollection is that my German teacher stated that Kennedy should have said "Ich bin Berliner," but everyone knew what he meant. As to Krapfen, I thought that it was a cruller. Conceivably it is something whose name changes with region, just like no one in NYC knew what a NY Steak was, at least until chain restaurants started.

I think you're right on the regional thing...we lived in Bavaria. For Rosen Montag, the day before Fasching (their version of Mardi Gra's Fat Tuesday...), the bakers made oodles of Krapfen, which is an utterly decadent jelly donut filled with rose hip jelly. I think the name of the pastry is appropo of what occurs when celebrations include too many of them...:eek::eek::eek:

"Ich bin Berliner" would mean the speaker lives in Berlin. Literally. "Ich bin ein Berliner" means the speaker is one with the people of Berlin.

Similarly, saying "Ich bin Arzt" means the speaker is actually a doctor. "Ich bin ein Arzt" would be used if someone acted in the manner of a doctor but wasn't one.

The confusion for English speakers lies in the fact that there is no diction difference in English between the two situations. One has to use the manner in which the statement is spoken or context to distinguish the two.
