RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

Atlanta was pretty notorious for having a terrible relationship with the NCAA in general. Hopefully new ownership changes that dynamic, though I'm not holding my breath.

With all the talk of league switching in the previous thread - I couldn't tell if anyone noticed that the planning for Ralph's next birthday party just got a whole lot easier....

http://www.rpiathletics.com/sports/2010/7/30/MHOCK_0730103548.aspx?path=hockey

Reserve Your Birthday Party for the
2010-11 RPI Men’s Hockey Season!

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

In honor of the thread title (and inspired by the ridiculous nature of posts I have read on the boards today), I had a random, far-fetched thought that made me hate myself as a person, and I figured I would share it with all of you.

Joe Bertagna mentioned an interest in developing a scheduling agreement between Hockey East and the Big Ten, similar to the ACC/Big Ten or Big East/SEC Challenges in basketball.

If he were successful, and in this same improbable universe, RPI accepted an invitation to join Hockey East.....would that result in Big Ten teams occassionally visiting the field house?

That almost proves that we won't join HEA. :D

It should be noted that OSU did visit the HEA for our tourney a few years ago, resulting in our 3rd straight 5-5 tie against them.

Still no Kasdorf, right? That might be an indication that Diebold is the incoming goaltender. Of course, these mean relatively nothing, aren't Bradley and Zalewski also listed in the directory? Though in this case, where the concern is thought to be about getting Kasdorf's educational ducks in a row to get him admitted for this year, there might be some significance.

Now each day that we don't get the official recruit announcement means it's more likely that SA and company are still waiting for Kasdorf's application to go through the pipeline.

Re: RPI Off-Season III: Another Helping of Mindless Speculation and Idle Chit Chat

Being in the directory is meaningless, as far as eligibility is concerned. As soon as they register for college classes full-time, the 5-year clock starts ticking (with exceptions too numerous to be listed in a post here). From my understanding of a quick read through the D1 manual, taking classes part-time does not affect their eligibility provided that they do not participate in official practices or intercollegiate competition.

Being registered coupled with actually attending a class starts your clock ticking.

was at HFH this morning. As JCrawford showed previously in his photos of the snowbank in the back of bldg., the ice is down. Wonder if this means Capt.'s practices will not be open to public as it was last year at "the Knick"? Staging is still set up behind HFH but inside there's about 30 staging panels stacked on the floor where stage used to be. Nothing else appears different inside i.e., painted seats...banners. If they are to practice at the Knick instead of HFH I'll know in 10-12 days when Aug.'s schedule is printed of which I'll post.

Heres BC Interruption's thoughts on the WaP write-up regarding RPI/Hockey East:

http://www.bcinterruption.com/2011/...ent-rpi-notre-dame-hockey-east-ecac-ccha-nchc

thanks for sharing this...they bring up a good point about Colgate and QU...good debate all around about what might be possible. Quick question regarding preference of a school that is D1 throughout versus one that plays up like RPI, CC, Johns Hopkins, etc...why the preference? Is there revenue sharing across sports? Is it a sense of athletic commitment on behalf of the member institutions in general?

You read my mind, I had the same question.
It seems to indicate that the incoming schools should include all their sports under the big east umbrella.
I don't think that the big east basketball schools want any part of QU or Colgate or any other ECAC schools for that matter.

There's only one Big East team in Hockey East: Providence.

Pure speculation here, but with regard to RPI maybe Hockey East would wonder whether you'll still have a D1 hockey program 5 or 10 years from now. Given the history around this issue, and what's going on in the Midwest, it's at least possible to envision a day when programs start dropping down to D3. I wonder if the D3 play-up schools might feel better about their futures if they all stick together, too. The next time somebody tries to force them to go D3 in all sports, will RPI get the same level of support in HEA that they'd get if they stick around and, together with SLU, Clarkson, and Union, made up a significant chunk of a competitive D1 conference? I don't know, but it may be something to consider. Not that I think it's imminent, but I sure hope RPI doesn't leave the ECAC (unless there's a radical realignment and the rest of us non-Ivies go along with you).

...there's always strength in numbers, unfortunately if the above were to ever happen, I'd venture a guess the Ivies might just shrug their shoulders and part ways with the play-ups. though, on the other side of things, I could be underestimating the Ivies' preference for the current ECAC alignment.

First, we're thankfully somewhat insulated from what's going on with D-II schools in the west, right now anyway.

Second, if Hockey East thinks the status of hockey is in danger at RPI, they don't know hockey very well. I suspect RPI would move to Division I in all sports (which they now have the theoretical capacity to do with their new facilities) rather than force hockey down to D-III.
