RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season

Re: RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season

Curious on why Tom? I think there is SOME truth to this, don't you? I feel we are getting B talent in the big picture of college hockey, which is fantastic for RPI. The A level talent is usually headed to other schools and for the most part, other leagues. Makes it all the more sweeter when RPI and other ECAC schools have national success.

I kind of agree and disagree at the same time. I'd phrase it slightly differently, similar end result: these are college hockey players. RPI has a more demanding curriculum than many other college hockey powers, no matter what your choice of major. Consequently, our pool of potential recruits is necessarily smaller than it is for some of our competitors.

Re: RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season

If SA is the choice, hopefully we can find a new coach as rapidly. IMHO, the procedure after Fridgen was released dragged out too long.
I would like to throw a name into the hat for RPI's next Head Coach. Ben Barr . I feel Barr should be considered. Barr played for RPI from 2000-2004, MVP for 2 years, Captain, volunteered 1 year for Appert. Union assistant under Leaman for 2 years. Barr helped turn that program around and now he's doing the same at Providence with Leaman. Seems to me he's a great recruiter. Barr has been an assistant coach for 6 years. Barr's ready !

All this off season drama thus far should make for an interesting banquet next Friday night. Can't wait to see what some have to report from it. Also wonder if Nick will make the banquet since Rochester has a game that night in Toronto.

Not hockey related but who think Tiger will win the Masters this weekend?

Heck no. I only root for golfers that swing the club just like how the BRO shoots the puck (feeble attempt to keep this on topic, I know). They've won 5 of the last 10, even if three were from one guy.

Re: RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season

According to a reliable source, they are hoping to have a new coach by Monday.

If they make a pick at Frozen Four Fri, Seth has a chance. IMHO, If it drags a little, it means they're waiting for Granato to get back from tourney in russia. What's your prediction, does he get it?

No and yes. No I don't need your email and yes I would miss SA. He is entertaining to say the least. By the way, earlier you accused me of leaving you neg rep. Just to set the record straight, it was not me. I can't give you rep again for a while I think because I left you positive rep before and signed my name. Sorry to disappoint you. :)

Re: RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season

I may be in the minority but I'll take Troy over Denver any day of the week. Living in the East is a lot more interesting than living in Denver. A very good friend of mine who is a skiing nut relocated to Denver a while back and after a few years came back East because the place just isn't that interesting. Yes the Rockies are bigger than the 'Dacks but that doesn't make the people more interesting. And don't forget that Denver is not in the mountains but on the edge of them. Look East from there and you see some of the most boring terrain in all of America. I'm not saying it is a bad place to live it just isn't as interesting or exotic as people like to make it out to be. In the end, I doubt that this decision will be about geography.

I'm not very concerned about him leaving. If he stays great. If he goes, we'll recover. I'm not convinced that he is the super ace recruiting talent some of us want to think he is. You can't tell me that there are way more recruiting impediments at RPI than there are at Union. Yet Union seems to be doing OK - if not better. On the bright side, if he does leave, whomever comes in next will certainly start off on the right foot - given the kids we've got coming back. So if there is to be a transition... now seems like as good a time as any. JMO...

Re: RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season

Interesting that Appert hasn't gone anywhere yet, and people are already looking to replace him. Simply incredible.

If (and that's a big if) he ends up in the Denver job, there will be plenty of time for pontificating. Until then, he's still our coach.

There have always been an extreme few positions Appert would legitimately look at, and Denver is one of them. You don't spend nine years at a place while winning championships and not develop an affinity for that place - especially on what most assistants make. Based on his background, you'd have to think Ferris State would be another one as his alma mater, and as a guy who grew up in Minnesota and played high school hockey there, the Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth jobs would probably be fairly high on the list as well based on history and reputation.

As for any of those positions - as well as any specific position regardless - they aren't going to come open with any frequency. Heck, it's the first time any of those four positions have been open in 13 years. If you have any interest at all, and that interest exists on the other side as well, you owe it to yourself to look into it. After all, you can't decide to take the job if you don't get it offered to you, and waiting for a more perfect time could likely mean waiting for a time that never comes.

So I don't blame Appert for taking a look. It doesn't mean he wants out of RPI. I'd be willing to bet that he could be offered the job and ultimately decide to stay at RPI after weighing everything. Or, maybe it would end up being a dream come true and he already knows it. He'll do what's best for him and he deserves 100% support for his decision, whichever it is.

So, Appert haters... where are you now? If he's so awful, if he's done such a horrible job at RPI, why would Denver even be entertaining the idea of having him at the helm of their program, eh? Let's hear the excuses.

I know this is off topic, but I came across this (many of you may have already read this) and found it interesting...I now look for the stats of those who are from Canada and made it to the show as a percentage of those who played major junior...looks like NY State is a fine breeding ground for recruiting! :)

Two thumbs up! Seth owes it to himself and his family to look. It doesn't mean he wants out... He has a family here, too. Just have to wait it out... And per timing, I'm with AspyDad... I think it'll be next week, maybe middle of the week. I mean, they have this mascot controversy to settle first.;)

Not off topic at all. After all, hasn't Coach recently been doing some recruiting in this fine state?

.....
Once he swung his leg over the fence to throw his name in the ring it activated the faithful's right/duty/obligation to pontificate, postulate or any other "ate", IMO. I pay good money to support the squad and am a proud fan. I have backed Seth throughout. I surely don't begrudge the guy for looking for a new opportunity, and will gladly welcome him back, IF he stays.

That said, if he's willing to entertain offers, I sure as heck am happy to entertain folks' ideas of possible replacements. My two cents.

Re: RPI Off-Season 2013 Part I: We Will Get Our Title Next Season

I think he'd be crazy not to take the job if offered. I'd be happy if he stayed too, he's finally found a mix of players that works in his system. I'm most concerned about a replacement - if they don't come from within, the shake-out of relationships is a time suck. We've waited long enough to contend for an ECAC championship again, I'd prefer not to wait because the new coach doesn't have "his guys".

Bingo. If we're going to play with the big boys, we gotta stay a step ahead.

That's what I'm thinking. Always need to have a Plan B in place, something I'm not sure the current admin is on top of...

Great post RC. I have purposely avoided the discussion because i think that if the job is open that he will take it and quite frankly cant be faulted for doing so. Not an outcome that I would like, and doesnt mean that he really wants to leave RPI - its just may be a better opportunity for him and his family.

It's a pointless exercise. Just because he's interviewing somewhere doesn't mean we need to find a list of people we'd hire to replace him.

Why not just do this every year, then? Matter of fact IF Seth leaves and we hire someone else, perhaps we need a list of people to replace HIM too.

Worry about the IFs later.
