RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

not to be a jerk or anything but O'Grady's goal came on "just throwing it at the net" from Brutlag, it was not a great shot by any means, and while Pirri did get position for Jerry's goal - the shot was still deflected and essentially "thrown" at the bodies in front of the net.

Jerry's goal looked pretty wide open to me.

You're right that O'Grady's goal came from picking up the garbage. You have to have at least one of those, as it exposes out-of-control defense. That skill will definitely help us if we were to just shoot it at the net. However, with shooting it at the net, you have to at least get it there. If you're just blindly shooting, chances are a forward will block it, and then it's a scramble to get control, and they'll most likely chip it out of the zone. You won't get a deflection, tip, or rebound, unless it actually gets to the goal. Might as well work for the good shot and have a better chance than just hoping to heck a forward doesn't block you.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I've said it a million times. Quality, not quantity. Outshot by 66-30, but outscored the opponents 8-2. WHAT.

Right before Bergin's goal, the ESPNU commentors were complaining that RPI wasn't shooting the puck. I said it out loud. "That's OK, when they shoot it, they'll score." Bing.

I know at about that time, about 3 seconds before the goal I said to myself, "Just shoot the d*** thing..." and after the goal, "Thank you." :D

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Here's a thought, any possibilities of us garnering votes yet? I think it may end up waiting until next week to see if we are able to beat Union, but there's a slight change at a couple of votes. We'll see what the press corps thinks.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Regarding next seasons schedule, was up in Placid on Saturday and heard that there wont be a "Governors Cup" tournament next year but instead it will be a single day event on Saturday, October 30th featuring Clarkson, RPI, SLU and Union at the 1980 Rink. Not sure who RPI will play, my guess either Clarkson or Union. Should be an awesome day of hockey, either way.

On a side note, I think moving Brutlag up to forward this weekend was a great move. I hope to see it again @ Union.

Yes, they announced that in the fall. The ECAC returning to the place that they never should have left. After the Atlantic City debacle is concluded and Hagwell is canned, perhaps they'll have the good sense to return the tourney to its home.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Get weekend. Defense solid. York solid. Special teams solid. I am not happy with the 5 on 5 though. I think you have to have Polacek and Helfrich back together. There is obviously chemistry between them and not sure why they would break that up?? We need to generate 5 on 5 points. Maybe they should put Watts with Kerrins he has speed and good offensive skills-I like what I am seeing with him and think he can contribute more than the checking line offers him and that would add a spark to that line. Brutlug at offense was a brilliant idea for many reasons. Union will not beat this team this weekend. Not sure how Q is still rated after so many loses.

Polacek has shown he can score skating with anyone, which is a great asset for a coach. Many of us have long said that Brutlag should play forward. If I haven't said it here, I know I've said it while watching games. He has great vision & mobility, has a good shot, and of course can be trusted to defend. So far so good with that experiment.

I am hard pressed to take exception with the line combos given the weekend outcome.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but, when we're 5-on-5, how much time have we actually spent in the offensive zone in a game on average? Let's not consider good vs. sub-par, because we've played both. We don't have to count special teams, because we know where the puck will be.

Line chemistry looks good, we're winning puck battles, our passing is getting better, most of those little things usually only the coaches care about are working.

I have to respectfully disagree. Without special teams this weekend we had nothing. Here is what I see:

People line stays
Kerrins Watts AAG
Lee Malachuk Brutlag
Cullen Polacek Helfrich

They seem even and balanced and it allows some 5 on 5 threats. Even if they key on Peoples Line or Helfrich/Cullen/Polacek they can't do both effectively. At times during the game each and both of these lines will get open and be a threat. Helfrich needs to be back in the mix and I just didn't see the chemistry with Kerrins and Brutlag. I believe this combo was successful early in the season. Polacek/Helfrich/Halprin were successful for two seasons and other teams were keying on them! Don't change up a good thing...adding Cullen is another threat to that line...time to change it back. Not sure who you would take out but like Halprin in the line up too. JMO

Special teams played a big role in weekend scoring, and there is a good reason for that. The reason is that at even strength, our forward lines were pressuring puckhandlers, causing turnovers and forcing Q & P to take penalties. Power plays are the end result of hustle and hard work at both ends of the ice. The forward lines - as Appert constructed them - did an excellent job.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

i watched the game on espn u

im going to dirty nectady on sat night hoping to finish what we should of last home game

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

This is just a guess on my part, but I watched Helfrich live on Friday night and on tv yesterday, bnd I believe that he is not 100%.
I watch him because he is one of my favorite players on the team and can be counted on to set up the scorers.
This weekend, he was slower than normal and his vision wasn't what it usually is.
I think that when he is back to normal, you will see him back with Polacek. They do have chemistry and each makes the other better players.

 How did you notice that? Did he have one eye closed or something? Did you throw something at him and he didn't duck?

I agree that I like Polacek and Helfrich playing together. I wouldn't say we had nothing, though, because we were winning puck battles, aside from the face washing we were drawing some penalties that Princeton may have had to take. At least for quite a bit of the 1st period we were controlling the game, too.

With Brutlag moving up to forward, we have a serious overload of forwards. I realize that sometimes it just works out that way, but now there's some tough competition to get playing time.

When their are men open in the slot and he doesn't see them, that is very unusual, and he missed open players on more than one occassion in each game. Players that he normally feeds in front of the net. That tells me that he is not on his game.
