RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

My impression of the team this year is that January will tell the story as to whether the team will begin to break through...can any of you guys give me some updates on which players are 'breaking out' for the second half of the season?
In my opinion, Cullen will show the greatest impovement and Bergin by just playing. I also think that the freshmen will all show significant improvement. Lastly, I am really hoping that York will.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

I'm surprised the GLI thread is so quiet. I can't wait for tomorrows game. Do we know if Bergin is in line up?

While the Engineers will play without standout freshman left winger Jerry D'Amigo, who's playing in the World Junior Tournament, Mike Bergin will almost certainly return from a concussion after missing eight games.

"Unless the walks out of this arena and breaks something, he's playing," Appert said of Bergin.

"It's great to be back," Bergin said midway through Monday's practice at The Joe. "I can't wait to play in a game again."

Freshman C.J. Lee is also likely to return from injury.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

It's good to hear Bergin is finally back. Let's hope he stays healthy for the rest of the season. I hope the team, especially Bergin and Lee stayed in good physical shape for this tournament. It should be a good game tonight. I think RPI will come out swinging tonight. A couple of early goals should keep the crowd quiet.

I agree (hope) that Cullen could be a major factor after showing signs the past three games of shaking that early season funk. IMO Bergin's absence is one of two major reasons RPI has struggled after a good start. The other reason is Allen York’s slump; at least I hope that is all it is. Having a little competition between York and Merriam might be just the catalyst to get the sophomore goalie back to his level of play late last season.

I do not agree with your assessment of the impact of the freshmen down the stretch, however. They are better than most RPI frosh in the past 20 years, but first-year players always seem to hit a wall in late January and February. The good ones usually bounce back at the end, but Appert will need the upperclassmen to step up and carry the load down the stretch.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Bergin and Lee being back should be a huge boost for this team and against a Michigan team that has been struggling for most of the season we should have a good chance

as for who's gonna breakout in the rest of the season? Without a doubt Helfrich and Kerins are going to be racking up points like they're going out of style. I also agree that Cullen should start playing some great hockey, hes gotta keep up with AAG. I also expect Pirri to step it up another level, hes been kind of struggling as of late and I think he'll get it worked out and show us what a real goal scorer looks like(again).

However, I don't think anyone in this tourney can even stand near Michigan State who will win it all in convincing fashion.

I hope you are right about Cullen, we need him to contribute in the scoring. As for Bergin, I'm taking a more measured approach -- while I sorely want him back -- I'm thinking it will take him a little while to get back into top game form, both physically and mentally. ( I am more than willing to wrong about this!)

Although I agree that MSU is the big favorite I would love for us to face them tomorrow night-we usually play to the level of the competition and it may bring out the best in us.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Team USA defeated Latvia 12-1 at World Juniors. :D Jerry D'Amigo assisted on goals #3 & #10. I stopped paying attention after they hit double digits, so I suppose its possible he participated in #11 & #12.

Doc, you got your wish. Now if all we have to play is MSU, without the aid of the referees, we might have a chance.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Absolutely f-cking phenomenal result tonight. Silencing a Joe crowd the way we did tonight was glorious.

There were good vibes all around in the building tonight as Mike Dark stopped by our section after the first period to say hello and chit chat.

Phenomenal night and now we're playing with house money.

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

It was absolutely fun to watch this RPI team tonight. This is a team on the move and I predict a national presence quite soon.

Where are your seats GLM?

Re: RPI III: Revenge of the Seth

Great win tonight... and a really good Mich State team tomorrow night. Time for some level heads... let's get our heads on straight and play our game. The talk of national presence is premature... let's just play our game on Wednesday night and enjoy the feeling of a little house money in our pockets... maybe Red would like to keep the change? Let's just play our game and let the chips fall where they may. :)

Jerry got very little ice time though compared to some of the "stars" despite being on what I can only assume to be the second line. he looked kind of lackluster out there but he still had some nice passes.
The US kept playing the same guys on really long shifts

it should be noted that Canada defeated Latvia 16-0 and they play a really nice style of hockey - their team is so overloaded with talent and its gonna be a fun match to watch Thursday night

also: a little something I found interesting and insane, at the Canada vs Slovakia match that was tonight(which Canada won 8-2) the winner of the 50/50 raffle got $56,500
must've been a nice day for that person.
